Telcos Dream of Video
Manitoba Telecom spends $210 million on TV
(old news - 06:59PM Thursday May 08 2003)
tags: Video · telco
Telephone companies haven't given up on offering video services to consumers, despite being dissapointed with technology like VDSL and the cost of network upgrades. It's been a dream for quite some time, made somewhat more urgent lately as cable takes the lead in the residential broadband race by a fairly wide margin. Technologies like VDSL, once considered a likely video conduit, is now considered too expensive to deploy by many telcos. As a result the baby bells have been toying with the idea of new satellite partnerships. But some telcos, like Manitoba Telecom in Canada, are using new technology to bring Video to Winnipeg. The company recently spent $210 million to bring television to Winnipeg residents.

Heh...

We'll see about that... I don't know, though. You'd have to offer a better bargain than cable. Also, there's only so much you can cram on to POTS. It's interesting, though. I wonder if it'll ever go anywhere. :x

Re: Heh...

POTS and DSL don't mix...

Telcos can't use old unreliable copper for this.
Instead, they should (although expensive) plan on installing FTTH
This opens up many more possibilities.

Expensive

I am not sure what it actually costs to deliver telephone, TV and internet access over a cable line but I doubt it is anywhere near $800.

Plus, I agree with the bandwidth limitations of the wires. How much can you really cram in there? Phone service, slow DSL, and 20 channels of crap.

no need

how u think we have it now? indepentent television companies pay for satellite and tv towers to broadcast signals (non cabletv). so why cant they do that now over the internet? in fact, with divx mpeg-4 video and mp3 audio it can be better quality while taking up less bandwidth, we just need multiple streaming servers setup similar to the tv broadcast towers, etc... it certainly can be done in 50 years =)

Re: no need

TV broadcast over the internet won't be bandwidth effective until ISP's support multicast. Without multicast, you're wasting a hell of alot of bandwidth.

My two cents...

I guess posters here didn't read the newsclip... VDSL does not rely on copper, it's built on fiber optics. That would explain the cost factor. OTOH it would be nice to have an alternative to cable.

FTTH/FTTN/FTTC

Then it goes through a media converter (fiber to copper)

I know how it works...
I'm saying I think it would be better for companies to invest in ethernet or ATM over fiber instead of VDSL

It ends up copper in the end.

I read it.

please provide catchy title

and MTS is partnered with Bell Canada in different areas, so using winterpeg winnipeg as a 'test market' makes some sense before taking on rogers cable in ontario

mts has also applied for a license to deliver video on demand [(vod) which the cableco monopoly companies have been keeping to itself] as part of its high speed internet (dsl) service

Hey - I got VDSL

And it works just fine. I get 3 streams of video (with 150+ channels), and 1MB/1MB VDSL service (although it barely, if ever, actualy hits that level)

I've had it since 1999 in the old USWest territory, but it was actual Qwest (the telco that took over UsWest) that brought to me..

LOL - looks like it cost them upwards of 3K to bring me my service (according to the article) - so that mean they didn't start making money off me until mid last year

Tono....
