Deal struck with Echostar
(old news - 01:03PM Monday Jul 21 2003)
tags: business · telco
With the telco's VDSL video dreams on the back burner and fiber to the home sitting half-baked in the oven, satellite bundles for the time being are the telco main course in their war on cable. SBC announced today that the company invested $500 million into Echostar, in the process creating a new partnership. SBC will offer satellite television service alongside their DSL and phone offerings in the hopes of better competing with cable industry bundles. Earlier this year SBC had considered buying DirecTV from Hughes, but backed away from the deal. The service should be available as an option to broadband consumers beginning in 2004 across SBC's 13 state territory.

Re: Save customers the pain and just send grenades

Dear SBC Subscriber:

Great news! Now you can bundle, rebundle and rerebundle all your communications needs! SBC is pleased to offer you – in one convenient billing – telephone, telegraph, teletype, television and telenet services in a package too confusing to break-down into its individual, component costs.

Rest assured, as we roll-out this exciting offering, that we will find new ways to bill you for everything from animated avatars to the number 3 (and letters d,e,f) on your telephone keypad. Also, please note with our TV product there will be a cap imposed on channel surfing. If you use your remote more than 2x/day, your TV signal will be limited to black-and-white images and reruns of Bewitched.

If you select to receive all of our services, we will award you a gold star. If you chose not to subscribe to 100% of our services, you will be penalized billed at a premium for your lack of support of SBC.

See you on Comedy Central!

Sincerely,
All Your Friends at SBC

Re: FINALLY!!!

Why does this allow you to finally ditch the cable company? You must be a complete SBC suckup. So, you can only get DishNetwork now that it has SBC's stamp of approval? You could've easily gotten DishNetwork all along. This is a pathetic attempt to compete against cable, and doesn't increase competition at all. DishNetwork has been a competitive option all them time anyways. As for bundling, Dish already had a DSL bundling deal with Earthlink. Plus, if you think that this will make Dishnetwork a better deal than it already is, think again. You will have to get sign up for Dish with SBC(who will get the $50 commission). You'll get far better deal(even with including the bundling) if you go with an independent DishNetwork retailer that installs. They get a much greater commission which they can give you a chunk of and blow away any deal SBC DishNetwork has has. Ex: I currently will pay people $80 to take a 2 receiver system with free installation(instead of charging them $50 upfront), they will then get 4 months of AT100+ HBO and Cinemax free(instead of 3 because I don't charge the $50). My deal is effectively $130 better.

Re: FINALLY!!!

This point is moot 2far since you must be no farther than 4,000 feet from your CO to get VDSL. Qwest is finding out its not as lucrative as they thought it might be. not too many people are 4 kilofeet or closer to their CO's. As for DISHNETWORK they werent bad [productwise] but their BILLING dept totally sucks.

Yeah, the reason people don't choose Dish is because of their billing dept. ALMOST NOBODY MAKES CONSUMER DECISIONS BASED ON BILLING DEPTs. Only companies whose products suck and prices are a rippoff will brag about nebulous things like billing department or customer service. I never heard about CableVision OOL having such a great billing department because people were so in love with the 8mb/1mb service. Only people so rich that they have nothing else to worry about but customer service and billing actually care about that. In this economy, people care about 1 thing and 1 thing only: getting the best deal.

and when everyone sells dish network, just think how little it will cost, and how many jobs will be available. maybe dish network will solve the unemployment situation. yeah, and multi-level marketing will pick up the slack.

Re: FINALLY!!!

Well, they solved my personal unemployment problem. The fact is that tons of people in this economy will gladly sacrifice a little customer service in order to save money. Customer service is something you prioritize in a good economy. I target people who want to penny pinch to the extreme. I'm targeting this economy.

are you saying people would rather have that cheapo dish network and it's poor quality for a few pennies less vs. directv? they'll get what they pay for. and, maybe those people should look into amway too.

Dude you are not reading this correctly, for what I see sbc won't be selling dishnetwork but bundling to their existing customer at a discount to make it atractive for what I understand you can go and tell your customers they can bundle the dish with dsl, wireless and phone this will actually will make it easy to sell it to your customers, sa far as deals go you know they are the same from dish network to all retailer is all matter of what you do to get the customers and if you are an small retailer you can take a chunk out of your commission and pass it to your customers. I am a retailer myself and I look forward to see if i can offer lower prices to better compete with cable

Isn't SBC already doing this

I thought that SBC already offered DN in DBS/DSL packages.
»www02.sbc.com/Products_Services/···,00.html

In any event, this is a great deal for SBC customers and an immediate leg up in SBC's effort to compete with cable.

This new agreement will allow them to begin working immediately on integrating operations, including order entry, customer service and billing, so they can begin offering customers the co-branded service in early 2004.

The real question is are they going to be offering the discounts to existing customers of both, or only new customers who sign up, as they have done in the past...

The ball park will be renamed next year, they wanted to do it this year but the decision came down late and advertising, tickets, etc were already in place for this season...

Re: aye?

I had SBC DDTV and man they sucked BIG time. They charge you for everything.Like to turn on HBO 12 bucks. 12 bucks to turn it off WTF.i only wanted HBO for the Saprano's.SBC don't know shit about cable and i will stay with the lesser of the 2 evel's TW cable.

SBC= shit DDTV.I moved just because i could not get cable Tv here.I needed a smaller Aprt and would have stayed but SBC had a deal that when the apartments were made that they have the rights for 20 years to carry DDTV there and lock out TWCable to me thats not a good deal for the people. The new owners looked in to and said they cant get out of it cuz its a 20 year contract WTF.SO now i can have both if cable sux.. but i can say this TWCable here in Houston has been good to me so i don't think i will get a dish anytime soon

Re: aye?

They were pretty bad at my apt in Houston, as well. Worst was when my NFL Sunday Ticket subscription would not come up on Sunday (several times). Their lone customer service rep said he couldn't do anything to fix it because he was just in an office with a phone. No computer! Also, they could not offer DirecTV's HDTV channels at any of their apartments. A community dish is a good idea, in theory. Technically there were always problems at my apt.

The problem with the way SBC does it is that they actually rebill for the services in lieu of having you dealing with DirecTV directly. Many other properties with shared dishes have a different arrangement, where you pay a small fee per month ($10/mo or so) for access to the dish (and perhaps locals received via an antenna if you live in an area where locals aren't available via sat) and then pay DirecTV for all sat services.

The "can't use 'DirecTiVo' with SBC apt DirecTV" issue is legendary over on tivocommunity.com...

bundles

SBC has already had a $5 DISH discount if you sub to both dsl and sat tv.

I just hope any bundle prices will offer a discount opposed to a penalty for not having both services.

Re: bundles

From the AP article about this - -

"In addition to the convenience of a single bill and the convenience of being able to order with one call, the customer will also get significant value," said Lea Ann Champion, SBC senior executive vice president and chief marketing officer. However, SBC officials declined to discuss specific discounts that customers might receive when the service is launched early next year.

One (independent) analyst’s take - - “Get a customer to use more of your services and they become a more profitable customer," he said. "Not only that, but when customers use multiple services, it becomes increasingly difficult to compare and contrast to competitive offerings so they tend to stay put."

“Underscoring the trend, just hours after the SBC announcement, Denver-based Qwest Communications International Inc., the main local phone provider in 14 Western and Plains states, announced its own partnerships with EchoStar and rival DirecTV Inc.”

So instead of rolling out broadband to all of its customers like it should SBC wants to get into the TV business?

Well, at least there's no way in hell SBC can screw TV up any worse than it already is.

Program Guide cost extra?

DishNetwork currently provides a free program guide with all of its programming packages.
If service is purchased thru SBC, will the program guide cost $8/mo extra, like CallerID?

What I think sucks is that you get 12 months of DishFlicks with a ClubDish referral. I'd rather have 6 months of Dish Entertainment magazine(the printed TV Guide), than 12 months of DishFlicks.
