Study indicates 329kbps on average

Verizon last week launched their EVDO (The Evolution Data Only) wireless network in two initial markets, Washington DC and San Diego. Analysts are so far welcoming the entry after a stuttered release of 3G networks that have delivered 2.5G speeds. Not many predict the network will be a serious competitor for wireless LAN (though they are different), though all of them will be watching Verizon's launch carefully. Monet Networks’ EV-DO launch in Duluth, Minnesota is the only other U.S. deployment of the technology to date.

At a price of $79.99 per month, users that are in range of Verizon's cellular service will see speeds of "20-40 times faster than a typical 56k dial-up connection". While EVDO has a maximum data rate of 2.4Mbps, users will only witness those speeds "in bursts" and will more commonly see speeds of 300-500Kbps, according to a company representative. The $79.99 monthly fee is for unlimited use. When users roam out of the EVDO coverage area, customers can still utilize Verizon's CDMA2000 1x service, which offers speeds more typically between 70-80Kbps (though often less).

RBC Capital Markets has apparently tested the new service in 20 locations throughout San Diego, and has found the speeds to be as advertised; the tests indicating a downstream average of 329kbps. No mention is made of the network's upstream performance; something many consumers are most concerned with.

The more options the better.

Now do they have the 3G handsets to go with the service? The price is great compared to others, you get both their wireless web services for $80. And 400k down compares to the basic DSL lines out there. The more options the better I say.

PS:
Warning the "as advertised" link is one of those annoying webpages you cant use the "back button" on. (Click the black down arrow on IE to get back to DSLR)

Express Network is now free. You just pay for minutes used same as talking. Many reports are out of 100K connections or higher. IM me for phone setup or other details.

AFAIK, unless something changed very recently, VZW is now provisioning "free" Express Network (aka NationalAccess under the new naming scheme) only for customers with camera phones, and only for use with the camera feature of such phones. "Free" EN was provisioned on many accounts for awhile but VZW wised up and apparently put a stop to it.

It comes with all new plans and can be added to all old plans. Thousands have done it.

Funny, Safari let me go backward and I didn't see any pop-ups. Maybe you should switch to Mozilla or Firebird or Opera? IE is a steaming turd if you ask me.

Wow, not much of a deal.

That really isn't a deal. Especially for Wireless service that only works when it is perfect outside...

I'll stick to my Road Runner and there terrible service.

Re: Wow, not much of a deal.

Just costs way too much. I'm not rich enough, and I don't know many who are, to pay that much for cell phone service, and 'supposedly' being able to use it with laptops and such. Sprint screwed me out of that deal, and after two months, I'm finally able to use my phone again, after the $450 bill they hit me with.

What's the latency and loss like?

The dialup-esque transfer rate of ~30kbps I get with my existing GPRS internet is acceptable when on the go, it's the 2000-3000ms of latency and packet loss that make it so darn unusable. It would be nice if they could get the pricing down to where sending a picture won't cost you an arm and a leg, too.

Re: What's the latency and loss like?

metricom had wireless internet a few years ago, same price, about 250k down although they only advertised it as 128k

is it really 329kbps

I would be very interested to see if this new EVDO service is the same as the current 2.5G in the other markets where you get 45kbps to 80kbps but that is just for web content when you start downloading something the it goes down to 19kbps or lower.

Hell, that's about as good as I'm seeing with VOL

2003-10-06 18:20:04 EST: 504 / 137
Your download speed : 504576 bps, or 504 kbps.
A 61.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 137033 bps, or 137 kbps.

Maybe I should dump this PC for a phone

Even higher data speeds

Deutsche Bank published a test that they performed on EV-DO in San Diego. (S2N Report #90) They got higher numbers.

Public Safety Wireless

Anyone out there plan to try this new connectivity in the Public Safety environment (CAD mobiles etc)? Sounds like a decent option with CDPD fading into obscurity in the near future. Speeds are looking a lot better than CDMA or GPRS.
