Analyst: 'just freaking desperate'?
(old news - 10:46AM Friday Dec 12 2003)
tags: wireless · trouble
Software bugs have prevented AT&T wireless from servicing many GSM/GPRS network customers for weeks, likewise causing numerous LNP transfer complaints and incurring the FCC's wrath. In what some call a desperation move, the company began giving away six of its top-selling mobile telephones in a PR related push this week. GSM/GPRS subscribers account for some 3 million of the company's 22 million customers, with half of all new customers signing up for this service.

The majority of them have been experiencing problems getting decent service or activating their phones - a tough hit for the company during the busy holiday season. Compounding the problems, AT&T Wireless received the most complaints of any vendor when Local Number Portability went live recently.

As the Seattle Times reported earlier this week, the company blamed "miscommunication, system and testing problems" for its portability woes after the FCC sent them a warning letter. Carriers have been reporting "thousands" of backlogged transfer requests for the past several weeks. Bloomberg News reports the company this week was giving away six of their high-end top selling phone models in a one day push. "This was a pretty expensive promotion for just one day," notes one analyst, who suggests the company may just be "freaking desperate."

Verizon is very good. I am on a 400minute/month plan, for $39.99. Service is great, I am hardly ever roaming.

The only dropped calls I have had were on the day of the blackout.

My AT&T wireless problems

I think I have given up on AT&T. They have been my provider for the past 7 years. I bought an unlocked GSM phone last week. I tried to get a sim card for it and migrate by TDMA number to the sim card.

No stores in Mid town Manhattan (4 within blocks of my office) had the cards, or had seen one for weeks. They said, "no problem", just call. That started a daily attempt to get to the migration people. Arguing that my phone would work if they just gave me the card! The poorly trained staff never got to send me one.

I walked into the Cingular store at Fifth and 47th St, went to my office, at lunch they called and said to come pick up the phone. It works great! Well, it does have some problems with the network, but where there is a signal, its great. I expect the signal area to improve with time.

My next move is to port the old phone number to the new Cingular service. I just have given up trying to get someone who knows the technology. The last person I spoke to today said, "I cannot port the phone number to a GSM service, any service". What is this women talking about?

Left for Surewest Wireless here. Going to get Surewest fiber as soon as they get it built-out to my area. Only a few miles to go...so near and yet so far....

Hmmmmm guess I will not switch to AT&T. I have been with Sprint for about 4 years now. Their service was always good, but their customer service is horrible at best. They seem to be incompetent, and never see the same thing twice, but that's another post. Now I am having frequent dropped calls, so am considering a switch. Sprint told me to bring the phone in for an update. I told them I only bought the phone 3 months ago, and they said it should be done every 3-6 months. When I had my old phone, the service was perfect till I let them do an update, it was still good, but not as good as it was previous.
They do sort of have me over a barrel, I am on one of their "Please stay with plans" 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends for $29.99, and I get a 15% discount through my old job.
Oh well, guess we will see if the update helps, otherwise it may be time to look elsewhere.

Hey just a little note. T Mobile is AT&T, so the switch you made from AT&T is still AT&T. Talk about an oxy-moron, no pun intended except to AT&T. I have been with Sprint PCS for Years and i'm not about to switch, no matter who wants to send me a new phone.

T-Mobile = Deutsche Telekom AG

Deutsche Telekom AG = AT&T??

The history of AT&T (take from »www.att.com/history/ )

The history of AT&T is in large measure the history of the telephone in the United States. AT&T's roots stretch back to 1875, with founder Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone. During the 19th century, AT&T became the parent company of the Bell System, the American telephone monopoly. The Bell System provided what was by all accounts the best telephone service in the world. The system broke up into eight companies in 1984 by agreement between AT&T and the U.S. Department of Justice. From 1984 until 1996 AT&T was an integrated telecommunications services and equipment company, succeeding in a newly competitive environment. Today, AT&T is rapidly evolving from a company that handles mostly long-distance voice calls to a company that provides data and voice communications over any distance through its two operating units, AT&T Business and AT&T Consumer.

U.S. Operations of T-Mobile (taken from »www.t-mobile.com/company/about/ )
Company Overview

Based in Bellevue, Washington, the U.S. operations of T-Mobile International AG & Co. K.G., consists of T-Mobile USA, Inc. (formerly VoiceStream Wireless) and Powertel, Inc. (together "T-Mobile"). T-Mobile International AG & Co. K.G. is the mobile communications subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT). T-Mobile is one of the fastest growing nationwide wireless service providers, offering all digital voice, messaging and high-speed wireless data services to more than 12 million customers in the United States. A cornerstone of T-Mobile's strong consumer appeal has been its Get More® business strategy to provide customers with the best overall value in their wireless service so they can enjoy the benefits of mobile communications to Get more from life®. T-Mobile has more than 22,000 employees across the country dedicated to delivering on its Get More® promise to provide customers with more minutes, more features and more service.

So I hope you were kidding (or maybe I read it wrong)

I was going to note that before while giving the histories of the two countries, but I didn't bother because I felt either way, none was T-Mobile.

I guess they should have a forrest gump message icon for you, because T-Mobile is AT&T

I have had AT&T wireless all over the country since 1996 and have NEVER had a trub. My ex wife was able to reach me through the Americas. People who hop services in the wireless market are as big of idiots as those who hop in the landmine market. AT&T IS THE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, perhaps the icon should be one of Rev. Sharpton and applied to you, as you seem to enjoy throwing statements about with no trace of evidence.

Support your assertion or quit belittling those that actually try to obtain proof of a claim.

I may be wrong, hell we learn something new everyday. But there was no need for wise remark either. If i'm wrong show me proof, I'd like to know. After kg4icg said that T-Mo was AT&T, I went to check, because if so, I would've made a dumb decission and hopefully it could prevent others from doing the same. All in all, I didn't like AT&T service, I went to T-Mobile, and I 100% satisfied.

Re: Switch

I think what he meant was T-mobile and ATT use the same type of GSM system as well as Cingular. ATT and Cingular are just in the transition phase from TDMA to GSM network integration. Where Verizon uses 1900 and 800 MHz CDMA as well as Alltel; and Sprint uses 1900 MHz CDMA.

ATT and T-mobile are two different companies, but with very similar networks. Have you noticed how T-mobile (powertel and Voicestream) had not done well until the use of famous spokesmodels i.e. Zeta Jones.

Thanks for the explaination. That's all I was looking for. In my area, (NY Metro) T-Mobile service is superior to AT&T. So I'm happy I made the decision to switch.

Re: No problems here

No problems here!

I contacted ATTWS on Tuesday about upgrading my wife's cell phone, switching her cell to a GSM account and combining her new account with my GSM account on a shared plan.

Overnight FedEx, wife got a new Samsung Samsung V206 for free! Awesome phone!

Called ATTWS to establish the $49 Shared plan (National service), 700 min., 1000 mobile to mobile min., Unlimited N/W. 2yr deal. For the first 4 months we get an additional 400 shared mintues. Service / Phone / Setup for FREE.

Add my phone to her account (as part of the shared plan) for additional $9.95. Cust. Serv. had trouble combining the accounts, called me back, apologized, had to put my phone back to its original $29 plan. Turns out the shared plan could not be established till after the first invoice on wife's new account. For the mistake, Cust. Serv credited my account $20.

Total for the shared plan will be $49 + $9.95 a month.

The only differece the share plan gets me is a lot more minutes than having two seperate $29 National plans.

Re: No problems here

AT&T GSM/GPRS works great in certain areas, really bites in others. I enjoy it for the unlimited inbound SMS/email (free), and the 'North America' package which I add once in a while for calling and visting back home in Canada (free calling and roaming in Canada!)

During Thanksgiving there were complaints among existing GSM folks that AT&T support couldn't access accounts.....I think much of that has been cleared up in the past week or so, though LNP and new subscribers are still an issue....

I have seen the same issue in Indianapolis. Problem is that I am on a GSM only plan.

As well, I have been trying to port my ATT number over to Sprint for more than 10 days. AT&T's problems have been preventing this port (this was confirmed during a phone call with the FCC).

The New World

life was better for them when they were a monopoly. now they can't compete because like most corporations they are more concerned with appeasing share holders and raising their quarterly figures than delivering a better product to customers. they rush and deliver crap. I have no sympathy and they can keep their free phones. the next year should be very interesting now that Time Warner and other cable companies have effectively declared war on the new monopolies who screw us regularly (Verizon and all the other Baby Bells with their no competition so you pay what we say policies) by beginning to offer local and long distance phone service courtesy of VoIP. Already they are squirming, demanding VoIP be regulated. Hopefully we'll get a little time to enjoy the reduced rates before our piece of sh*t elected officials fall to the money of big business and allow them to regulate it and screw us like they let the local phone monopolies do to us now.

AT&T Wireless is no longer part of AT&T. They spun it off about 2.5 years ago to create "value" for the investment banks and large shareholders while screwing the average shareholder, employee and customer.

I had them for three years and thry were horrible. the worst of the worst. Switched to Sprint and could not be happier

karma coming around

Once it was determined that although LNP would be somewhat of a technical challenge, but it would be possible, all carriers should have been working towards it. But because it presented some operational challenges, they refused to provide it. (Actually, I don't have experience in phone routing, but if it's anything like IPv4 routing, I can imagine the problems. There's nothing quite like taking a /16 network, then having to add 1000 or more /32 exceptions to that routing rule.) So now the general public gets wind of this, and starts demanding that the government do something about it. And apparently despite the telecom lobbies, we now have this law. And of course, like most laws, it has an effective date. It's no surprise to me that this "choke point" of this effective date caused a mountain of problems as everybody rushes to take advantage of this new law.

The moral of the story: better anticipate what your customer wants before you're regulated into doing it.

Some problems with ATTWS customer service emails

I'm an existing ATTWS TDMA customer since 2000. So far my experience has been acceptable but not great. I've experienced echoes, frequent call drops / handoff issues, awful data charges, uneducated customer service reps, and some minor billing issues. This isn't to say that other companies are doing entirely better, however.

My father just signed up for AT&T Wireless GSM before Thanksgiving and had a number of problems. I think the series of emails he exchanged with them was even funnier -- canned responses without admitting there was a problem with their system for the better part of a week:
