2003 'Worst Year Ever' for VirusesOn Bugbear, on Blaster, on Sobig, on Slammer ( old news - 03:20PM Thursday Dec 25 2003) tags: security2003 was the "worst year ever" for viruses and worms according to security analysts. Worms caused billions in damage throughout the year, and their subsequent variants often crippled everything from ATM machines to anti-spam websites. Slammer showed up in January, followed by Bugbear in June. Blaster and Sobig then spread like wildfire in the summer months, and variants of those viruses have been circulating since. "This has been the worst ever," says one analyst to Internet News. "Without a doubt, malicious code came to a massive head in 2003... we saw a huge impact of malicious code on infrastructure. We had seen worms cause some disruption before, but mostly they'd been an annoyance. Now infrastructure is being impacted." A senior analyst at Sophos calls 2003 "the busiest one on record for us." | A newer, safer, tighter, hacker RESISTANT OS Well there are 2 OSes coming up in the near future with the promise to help lower Virus/worm/trojan/etc. attacks.
First off the most well known, MS is coming out with a new technology they're hoping will be more hacker resistant. From what I have read it will help, but still has bugs. It will at least stop script kiddies from having a hay day with you. Basically updating the built in firewall to be more like ZoneAlarm, allowing incoming and outgoing packet control, including ports and protocol. The neatest thing I read, was the "smart OS" technology, where if a program was created using "x" serial/digital signature and such of a software, that only that one could open or modify it. Also disabling most stupid protocols for standard users such as NETBIOS, file and printer sharing, remote desktop, and other features that came on by DEFAULT!
Then you have an OS that has potential, how good it will turn out is another story. I don't know how many are following the STI (Sony, Toshiba, and IBM) Cell, but it has a very complex architecture, similar to their multiple processor supercomputer (don't remember the name, Big Blue?, the one that beat the world chess champion). Anyway they have decided to go in on a joint venture to create a 64 bit OS to handle this processor, writing it from the ground up. Probably ending up like a *nix OS, could be another option in the near future. -- Thank you for choosing SBC Internet Services. My name is Rick. How may I help you today?

| Good Security Habits and 64-bit Future
Yeah, turning netbios helps a little, but still being behind a router with firewall built in, firewall software (ie. ZoneAlarm) and a good AntiVirus software will get you a pretty solid protection. How would anyone know if they have a virus run around your system silently and/or a worm until your harddrive crashes and/or come to a abrupt stop. It also helps to have good security habits like everyone else says, do not open e-mail you do not know, scan files that you download, etc. If you have a wireless network, disable SSID, and use 128-bit encryption (WEP,etc.). With AMD 64 out, 64 bit will have better security encryption when the software and/or service pack enables it. So for the folk that think longhorn will have more cracks than XP with problems like buffer-under-run are in for a special treat, because it will not run. I think Microsoft learned a valuable lesson and will make a better OS in the future, only problem is their business ethics. With all the war drivers out there, stop what your doing and use your own network to do good or evil and don't suck others in with you no matter how unknowledgable they are about security and networking. It just good manners to respect peoples property and that includes there networks and internet connection.
