3G videophones shunned?
(old news - 02:19PM Thursday Jan 22 2004)
tags: Video · wireless · Op/Ed
According to this Silicon.com editorial (spotted via Techdirt), third generation hand-held video-phones will never take off, because people won't be able to lie about where they're calling from. According to the story, 45% of participants in a recent survey said they use text messaging via mobile phone to lie about their location. Perhaps the discussion speaks more to the quality of people's relationships than third generation technology. Luckily for U.S. liars, third generation high-speed wireless networks (much less video-communication via handheld) are still very much in their infancy. We recently discussed why (non-mobile) video-phones have yet to really take off.

Not Exactly....

The real reason 3G video won't take-off is because any video-phone at less than 384kbs sucks bad. Fix that and it'll get a lot of use.

you pay for ringtones? you realize that they are just midi files right?

»flecom.net/wap

have a few ring tones i made/modified there if you want them, that link should work in a wap enabled phone also

also have some backgrounds for a Nokia 3595 and a Motorola 722i

is also a great place for ringtones

Heh. Yes I know they're midi, no I don't buy them. I like the one that simply sounds like an old-fashioned telephone.

Me too. A friend's phone came with that one standard. My question is if you have your own sound file how do you import it to your phone? Mine is a Panasonic provided by AT&T Wireless (TDMA network).

I have an AT&T GSM phone and I have to connect to the internet to download ring tones or wallpapers. And it's not cheap in terms of usage. Otherwise I would need a USB Sync cable which connects to my computer at $30.

The Swiss Army Knife of cell phones - Video Phones

In some places, a video phone is prohibited. Schools, Fitness Centers, etc. many are not allowing them for a variety of reasons. I refer to them as a Swiss Army Knife Cell phones. I don't need games, music, and cameras just a phone. Most people have Internet-capable phones and they don't even use that feature.

Being prohibited.. can ya blame them. Strip club guys beaming pictures back to their buddies to post on the web. And stupid people doing all sorts of dumb stuff like the camera peepers. and we all know people that have those phones are all 100 % honest.

Internet capable phones are funny. For the price and for the use you get they are worthless. Another distraction for people. Momma bidding on ebay while driving her kid to school. Ohhh boy what a weird weird civilization we have become.

Re: The Swiss Army Knife of cell phones - Video Phones

I agree. I saw prototype phones from a Korean company (manufacturer) about 2 years ago. They were not camera phones but had capability of downloading a 2 hour movie and able to pick up TV (with a little card inserted - like a memory stick only for TV reception).

Many people (IT types that MUST have the latest PDA/MP3/cell phone) who would have been first adopters of those phones are still laid off or underemployed so they are targeted teens to "be the first one" to send pics of their boy or girl firends to others.

No one is going to buy something they are restricted to use.

I don't know if the limitations are in the cell phones or what but - if you could get them to use mpeg4 128Kbit for the medium - The video is quite good - certainly good enough to just talk to your girlfriend or parents while out of town or something

Check out cspan.org - they use 128Kbit real/wimp I think they are basically mpeg4 the streams are pretty good if you ask me

You don't need to. Personally I would not want a video phone because I would feel obligated to keep eye contact with the person I am talking to. I like to do other things while I am talking on the phone. Some people get tired of just holding a phone over a certain amount of time. Try getting them to look at it to.

Balderdash!

... they won't take off because --- "nobody wants them. Nobody EVER wanted them."

There may be a lot of reasons; privacy is definitely one. But the idea of being on camera every time you communicate via phone is ridiculous. And it serves little purpose, during most conversations. Assuming a switch, there certainly are reasons you may want to send video or a graphic. Or see mom or auntie during an LD call (but what about e-mailing a photo, or using an internet based video chat, free?) ... but as for everyday use for generic calling, it's another of those tech toy concepts that nobody's stumbling on their shoelaces racing to adopt, and I have a lot of difficulty imagining anyone ever doing so for...

Video phones, for some reason, have been the iconic "futurist" metaphor for modern communications. But they've been accessible technology since the 1970's, and nobody's ever wanted them, outside of businesses wanting components for distance conferencing systems. Seems that futurists don't bother asking people what they want... the Jetsons have it, that means everyone will want it, right?

uhhh... "wrong".

Re: Balderdash!

What about the price? How much more do you want to pay a month to video phone? Basically, it will require tons of investments, that the clients won't be willing to pay for. That would be a problem IMHO.

perhaps everyone will want a phone booth now

Those of you from Milwaukee (or who have visited) will remember The Safe House bar. It is a spy-theme based bar with lots of retro James Bond paraphernalia. One of the gimmicks they have in the bar is a phone booth that lets you select the background noise of your choice.

If you want to sound like you are calling from the airport, the floor of the NYSE, the harbor docks, etc., simply make your selection before calling.

Perhaps hand held video phone users will pay to duck into a phone booth that makes it look like they are calling from the hospital, or the grocery store, or some other mundane place.

Re: perhaps everyone will want a phone booth now

There was a bar/restaurant similar to that in the San Francisco area, though I do not know where exactly it was. It was a British spy theme, complete with hidden passages, a couple booths that would spin to make you look like you left the table, mirrors that would let you look at other people while they ate.

Pretty kewl place, but I do not think it caught on.

Back to the Topic... Being in California, and seeing the obsession people have with talking on the phone while driving, and most of the time without a headset, I think video cell phones are a profoundly bad idea. Granted, there are people you use cell phones and drive safely... with their headset, but I see too many people that do not... add the ability to watch the person while driving... that it... accidents galore!

Gee I can see it now....

.....guy has video phone. Guy is driving. Guy's girlfriend calls. He answers phone. She is some sexy outfit saying come home now. Guys sess this. Guy gets excited. Guy crashes cause he wasn't paying attension to road. Guy spends next 2 hours dealing with angry people, tow truck drivers, and police officers.

Fact is most people can't talk and the phone and drive real well. Adding video will really make things interesting.

Also, imagine using one of these and walking down the street.....into someone else or another object.

Maybe video to video for the home by not mobile. Not yet at least.

Darned... I did not read down far enough... I should have put my comment here!

But I agree 100%. People who talk on the phone while driving, should at the VERY LEAST wear a headset... even then the conversation should be kept short.

I would disagree atleast for me. I have found for me that the headsets actually create more of a issue. You know, phone rings, grab headset, put it on, "phone still ringing" hit ok or open your phone hit car in front of you as you look down to hit ok or adjusting the volume. I drive WAY better with just my handset.

Re: Gee I can see it now....

Then you have the wrong headset. When driving I wear a comfortable that has a button on it to pick up the call. If traffic is heavy, I ignore it, if it is light, then I will take the call, but keep it short. If I can tell that the call will be a while, I will either call the person back after I park, or pull over to the side of the road. It is funny, but I have had people in the car with me who say that doing this is silly... but I will tell you, I am a tech support guy for an Insurance company, and I sit in the main area with the adjusters... I know all the excuses and all the situations. There is no excuse for not trying to drive safe... and your hand to the side of your head obstructs part of your view and keeps a hand off the wheel if a a sudden need for both hand should arise.

Re: Gee I can see it now....

This works for you, it as I said it doesn't for me. AS far putting my hand to my head and obstructing my view well I guess that depends if you hand/arm is actually in the way of your "view" which mine is not. I hardly ever drive with both hands on the wheel and thats even when I'm at the track. Its just not my driving style. I do move over to the far R lane if its a call I need to take and I typically keep my calls short. Plus I just flat out don't take calls in rush hour traffic. If you ever been to ATL then you will know we have our normal 85-90 mph speed and then come around the next bend to find everyone at a stand still. I almost think it takes more concentration to not get killed in rush hour than it does racing at the track. Or atleast here it does.

Re: mark my words..

It will definitely take off.

The others are totally missing the concept.

Parents will FORCE their kids to have video phones. No more "Mom, I'm at Stacy's house doing homework" while she's really at Dan's room making out.

Girlfriends will force their boyfriends to have a video phone so they can check up on them and demand to see where they are. And vice versa of course.

And for those that really refuse to show themselves, I'm 100% certain you'll have the option to turn off the video feed. You won't be forced to show yourself if you don't want to.

Of course if it was your parents or significant other demanding your video feed, you'll have a harder time refusing.

This is the future. No way to change that FACT. Just deal with it.

Nope, Not For Me

If I wanted to talk face-to-face with someone, I'd go visit them. I don't want to have to pay visual attention to the phone when I'm talking. The people that know me, already know what I look like, and for the people who don't, well, it'll just remain one of life's little mysteries.

Hrmm i don't really care whether they make it or not. But if they did i think it would be interesting. However it's not something i'd like to have all the time, it would be annoying to have to try and focus on the phone as well as the person your talking to. For me i think it'd just be something neat to have if it was there.

Re: Nope, Not For Me

If I ever get rich enough to have a cellular telephone it most definitely will not have a camera in it. If a camera phone is the only thing that I can get the camera WILL get a lobotomy.
