DirecTV bundles hitting east coast soon
(old news - 06:41PM Thursday Jan 29 2004)
tags: dsl · satellite · business
Verizon's plan to offer DirecTV satellite bundled with wireless, landline, and DSL service should take wing during February, according to representatives. The company will begin reselling DirecTV service in Rhode Island next Tuesday, with additional New England and mid-Atlantic states seeing the bundles over the next several months. In Rhode Island the service will cost $35 a month. Verizon execs claim users can stand to save up to $240 a year in some instances, though often bundles are designed specifically to give the impression of savings more often than actual savings. Users should still do their homework and shop around for the best deals.

Verizon announced the DirecTV deal last fall, and was one of the last telcos to strike a bundle deal with a satellite provider. The telco industry hopes such satellite bundles will allow them to compete with cable providers while they slowly deploy next-generation hardware for TV via DSL. While the bells are busy trying to include a video component in their bundles, the majority of cable providers are pushing to provider a voice (VoIP) component.

I'm not waiting

Comcast CATV is getting kicked to the curb next month. HSI is already gone and with the latest round of CC price increases I don't need some discount to get me to switch the last CC service I subscribe to.

CATV extortionists like Comcast are doing the telco's work for them in getting customers to flee cable.

[ Confused ]

Ok...so does people want:

1.) Cheaper but old structured internet/tv/wireless
2.) Little more expensive but new
internet(fiber)/HDtv/Wireless(hiher speeds)
3.) Other

I don't mind spending a little bit extra $$$ on some new hot technology but stuck with the same stuff for a LONG time won't help us either.

As usual things are rollin' slowly if not backwards...

JUST THE OPINION

Re: [ Confused ]

I want a-la-carte pricing. I want HDTV, but don't want to subsidize everyone's ESPN and FOX SPORTS. I don't want to have to order 300 channels of crap to get HBO.

I also want a choice of set top box. The UI that Comcast puts on these Motorola boxes is pure sh*t. With DirecTV I get the beautiful dual-recording TiVo interface. Or a choice of several others, depending on who I buy a box from.

I like Comcast's HSI offering. It's relatively competitive. Their TV is still crap and it's WAY too expensive. The only reason I will touch them for TV is because of HDTV locals.

Re: [ Confused ]

Amen to that. The Comcast/Time Warner/etc dvr is just trash compared to directivo. I cant wait for the day when DirecTV uses directivo as the standard receiver.

I'm feeling ya here -- and comcast seems to be the worst of the major providers in creaky UI -- but we are own worst enemies. Too many people take whatever junk their CATV foists on them and never push for good stuff. I know it takes a lotta time and energy to keep up with this stuff and even more to fight your official locally-licensed provider, but I gotta believe if more people screamed SOMETHING might happen.

Example: Pioneer makes great little hi-def box with DVI out that Time Warner doles out like gold and absolutely will not give you a manual for (something about "voiding the warranty," seriously). So most folks get the horrid old SA box and think, "Gee, my hi-def is kinda weak, maybe I'll get DTV." So they still make work for themselves.

I say wherever you are, whomever or whatever you have, push like a crazy person for the best THEN switch if you hafta. You get the service you settle for.

Re: [ NOT Confused ]

Oh joy. I get to say it again like I did in the other bundling thread. I'll see if I can put it a little differently this time for entertainment value.

You want phone service? Go to the phone company.

You want TV? I happen to like DTV better than Comcast, but in either case, TV is their business, so go with them.

You want internet? Get an ISP!

If you want donuts, you don't go to a hardware store. Verizon sucks as an ISP. So does Comcast. I had DirectTVDSL, and they were pretty good, but not as good as a real ISP.

I pay a good 35% more doing it this way than I would if I had bundled services, but I get what I pay for. In New Hampshire, we have a thing called Common Sense. We know that if you buy a pair of Wal Mart boots, they will only last 6 months. They will cost 25% what a good pair of Redwings do, but that pair of Redwings will last 7 - 8x longer. So ... do I pay $40.00 every six months to tromp around in cow doodoo, mud and snow, and at the end of 3 years have it cost me $240.00 or do I pay $120.00 one time, and tromp through the same amount of cow doodoo, mud and snow? Same amount of doodoo, half the money. Hmmmm.

Too bad our neighbors in Vermont can't have Common Sense. Gee ... I want to run for president ... I think I'll seal all my records, so right from the start I'll look like I have something to hide. Then, I'll act like a pro wrestler when I get my butt kicked. pffffft.

too little, too late

wow, that might be great IF I COULD GET DSL!

Aside from that rant, let's suppose I have another wireless service, cable TV and cable HSI and only landline service with Verizon.

They expect me to:

* change wireless providers - I get to keep my phone number but not my phone (most likely) - strike one!

* drop cable for Sat TV - is installation of the dishes free? do I have line of sight to the satellite? how long will it take? what a pain for me to change - strike 2!

* drop cable HSI and get DSL - how long will that take? how far am I from the CO (what speeds can I get)? I have to change the modem I bought! strike 3!

What on earth makes VERIZON think people will switch if they only have one, maybe two verizon services? I doubt if the savings is that much.

I can see people going for this if they don't have some of these services at all, but if people already have these services from somebody else, I can't see it happening.

Why in the hell doesn't verizon try to expand the reach of DSL by using some newer technology.

I am thinking about it, I am just so sick of the prices hikes in cable and half the time the sound and picture is crap (that's with digital.) I have been thinking of going to Direct TV but in order to have HSI I have to carry basic cable, this might be enough to push me over.

It's an option. See, this is what we call a COMPETITIVE MARKET. It keeps prices down and quality up, when it's done right.

If it doesn't work for you, DON'T USE IT. Since I have DSL, VW service, and want DirecTV, this kicks ass for me. So don't piss on my campfire just because it doesn't turn your particular crank. Just for fun, I'll pick your particular rant apart piece by piece:

1. Phones are so cheap and subsidized lately that it's beginning not to matter. With a 1-year contract, you can hit sub-$100 prices on many good phones, and it's only getting better. Stop whining.

2. Sat might not work for you, true. People in single-family homes usually have better luck than apartment dwellers, so this might be more targeted for them. And hey, if you've got a SW exposure, you're gold. YMMV.

3. It doesn't take long (a week?). If you're not out in the boonies, you have a decent chance of getting it, as Verizon increases their RT-based DSL coverage (read the press releases). And why in the hell did you buy a modem, with technology curves in broadband being what they are right now?

4. Expand DSL reach? They are (see above). They're also the most aggressive on FTTP, which is expensive, and may take a while to fully deploy.

5. One-bill setups are powerful, as people like consolidation and the ability to yell at one entity. If they can sweeten the deal with a cost savings for bundling (let's hope they're not stupid), even better.

Think outside of your tiny-ass kingdom for a split second, when arguing this stuff, and consider the bigger picture. Something presents options to the market and supplies competition gives us (consumers) a victory. You don't like it, don't use it!

Re: too little, too late

First off, it's not a true competitive market. There is only one company that owns the last mile in any given LATA. Therefore if you want DSL you're basically at that LECs mercy. Here in the 21rst Century Fiber to the Curb is a liability.

I live in what is described as the technology corridor in the D.C. area and have been waiting for DSL for over 5 years. Many major high tech corporations employ many of my friends and neighbors. Only within the last year has 2-way high speed cable been an option. So where are the options? Where are the victories? Verizon has publicly stated that they prefer to stay in litigation before they would consider opening their markets. It's a fools play. While they drag their feet they lose more potential customer to the cable companies. Just wait until these same cable companies start to offer VoIP. Which in today's terms is any day.

I would rather companies such as Verizon focus on providing a better product to all they serve instead of wasting time with sales gimicks. Consider the motivation for Verizon to provide SAT. It's nothing more than an attempt to get back at the cable companies who are taking their business away.

As for the a single bill? Who cares. If you make electronic payments you don't even notice.

Lastly to the "tiny-ass" kingdom - it's the LECs that are trying to stifle competition. Just read the reports on the lobbing efforts of these same companies.

Oh and BTW, I won't pay the cable companies, I have DirecTV, and I still use Dial-up. It's the principle. Where's my DSL service? Oh it's stuck in some non-provisioned DSLAM in a Verizon warehouse.

would this motivate last mile deployment?

I would hope that this would involve low latency satellite technology, or at least wireless access points capable of reaching all costumers. I've been with out/trying to get broadband for about 3 to 4 years now

bundle

hummm i'm wondering if this would be only available to new users or anyone? It would work great for me, because I have Verizon's landline, DSL, wireless, and Directv. Putting everything in a bundle would put everything in one monthly bill and save a little $$.

Pricing?

From what I'm getting from the article, if I pay $35 a month I get DirecTV, a landline, wireless, and DSL services?

This Is Great News

I probably won't be able to get the service as I live in an apartment, but it will give some much needed competition to those bastards at Comcrap that keep jacking up my rates.

After being with VZ for two years I switched to Comcrap for one year. Just last month, I switched back to VZ. It meant having to have a landline again but having the most basic landline service and my DSL still comes out much less than Comcrap that charges me for the digital converter, the modem and I wouldn't be surprised if they charge a rental fee for the remote.

A point that someone else mentioned is that cable is getting too damd expensive and because of that I should have the option to pick and choose the channels I want. I don't want ESPN, FOX Sports, HSN, QVC, or any of that other stuff I'm not interested in.

Give me HBO, SHO, MSNBC, CNN, FOX, Local channels, History, Discovery, and others that I want.

I hear that the reason cable has to raise rates so often is because the networks (Particularly Sports Networks) have to have a way to pay salaries to million dollar athletes (current and retired) so the cable companies have to pass it onto the consumer.

Then I say the cable companies should give the consumers a choice thereby forcing the sports networks to lower their outrageous prices.

I sincerely hope that VZ and Direct TV can give do this for comsumers. In my area (Arlington, VA) Comcrap has outstanding service but the price hikes, and forcing people to upgrade to digital to get premium channels is just freakin evil.

Can't Wait

If only we could just get DSL in our area we'd be set. The ONLY company we can get now is ComCrap. These bills are ridiculous!

Re: Can't Wait

Oh yeah I know how you feel. Imagine my surprise when I learned that one of my best friends that lives in Ashburn, VA (about 40 Minutes from DC) and is served by Adelphia pays like only 99 dollars for his digital cable and internet with all the premium channels.

For a comparable package from Comcrap I'd have to pay over 140 bucks and that doesn't include equiment rental fees. I know there is a lot that gets factored in here but damd.

Re: Can't Wait

I signed up for the BellSouth service and will be saving over $25 a month for tv/dsl/phone as compared to COX. Add in the cellular saving and it comes to $33 per month saving. COX doesn't have the cellular option so they are not a complete offering company like BellSouth. I also get a FREE one time charge for TiVo!!!
