So entering a building (1900 takes more of a hit while traveling through objects than 800, tower are positioned for 800 density, not 1900 density most likly) can make your phone loose the HSDPA signal, but switch to the EDGE signal that still works. At least in my area, Verizon's network outperforms AT&T, and the distortion I heard before the call dropped is something I'm used to hearing on the other end when I'm talking to someone who's on AT&T Wireless, even from a landline.
You can't win for losing though. As a moderator of an AT&T area, I used to get a lot of complaints that I was being pro-AT&T when I was reining in senseless bashing, not to mention having someone from the site tell me that people have a right to complain.

I tested Verizon out 2 years ago and it did sound much better then ATT. In areas I go Verizon had very bad coverage up north in the UP of MI and Northern WI which I visit frequently. I decided to stay with ATT for that reason if that wasn't a factor. I am not sure I would still be with ATT.

| Re: "problem on ATT's network" Drummond is one spot I visit during winter. ATT has ok coverage because Drummond's cell tower is GSM by a 3rd party carrier not ATT. The coverage was edge which is ok but voice quality wasn't like it is when in 3g.
Although a few verizon/alltel folks got a signal then lost it this past winter. The year before they never got anything.
What I have noticed with ATT is it has a hard time handing off from tower to tower in certain areas. Those areas are not rural areas. We are talking about the suburbs of chicago. For instance I refuse to take calls while on the train from the city to my suburb. I will get dropped calls like no tomorrow. The main reason is some towns are 3g and others aren't. It seems those are the troubling spots.
Like I said for what I need ATT works but they could do much better with voice and data IMO.

en102Canadian, eh? join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA | 3G in SoCal .. Has been up/down since they turned it up last year. Even today, in an area, at home, outdoors (outdoor office) where I typically have '4' bars (-84 to -89dBm reading) on my Samsung ZX-20, it will lose 3G service and go to GSM.
In many (read most) markets, AT&T has allocated 10MHz paired of 1900MHz.
Eg. In Los Angeles, AT&T has (or uses) the following: GSM 850 on cell A band (25MHz) GSM 1900 on PCS D block (10MHz) 3G (WCDMA) 1900 on PCS B3 block (10MHz)
3G devices can (and do) handoff to GSM (not always without dropping a call). My personal suspicion is that there is not enough spectrum deployed to handle 3G voice and data in these markets. L.A. has a lot of subscribers. -- Canada = Hollywood North

A little over 3 years ago I moved to New Jersey. Before the move, I made an apartment hunting trip with a friend; I had Cingular and he had Verizon. I would have a full strength signal but when I tried to make calls, it would just hang for about 15-20 seconds -- then, half the time the phone would just give up and go back to the main menu, the other half the time it would finally push through and make the call. All the while I had, according to the phone, a perfectly strong signal. According to the CSR (HA!) my phone was having to communicate with a server in Texas (where my account was based) and that's what was taking so long -- maybe Cingular was still using carrier pigeons?
Prior to that... I would drive pretty frequently between Texas and Georgia/Southeast. The game was always 'wonder if anyone has called me?' I would be driving down Interstate 20 with full strength signal... and get an indication that I suddently had a voicemail that was about 15 seconds old. Huh, my phone never rang??? I could get text message, voicemails, etc all day... but phone calls... oh, you actually wanted to use your phone for phone calls?!?!?!
I have plenty of other Cingular hell stories, but I'll spare everyone.
