One of the poorest kept secrets in recent memory is gaining more traction. Gizmodo reports that someone "very, very close to the 3G iPhone launch" has told them that Apple will indeed announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th. Analysts were pegging June 9 as the launch date as early as April, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise for those playing the "iPhone hype insanity" game at home.

Will Apple/AT&T allow discounted upgrades??

I wonder if Apple &/OR AT&T will start a discounted upgrade program. It has been a year from the original iPhone and this is just about the time Apple tries to get all the faithful to spend a few hundred more on upgrades, like they do with iPods over and over again.

I'd almost use a 3g iPhone.

I don't want to be married to AT&T though. Too expensive if you ask me.

Re: Will Apple/AT&T allow discounted upgrades??

I've been with att (formerly cingular) since mid 2005, and i have to say right now, after hearing umpteen complaints from friends who have verizon, virgin mobile etc i am thoroughly glad i chose to go with att. They are very understanding to my needs and my payment habits, and are willing to spend time on the phone and at the retail locations to do things the competitors don't do or aren't trained for. That said, in my area i never have less than 3 bars outside, and when i'm on train to nyc and in nyc always 4-5 bars. Consistently good service is worth it. I have the 450/5000 plan with unlimited mobile to mobile in network messages + 200 out of network pr month, and remember i also have rollover minutes, which now total over 4000, even though my monthly paid ration for weekdaytime is 450. I have enough minutes to talk for 3 days solid and still not be over. No one who has verizon etc can say that. Expensive? Compared to what?

I'm going to wait until the first set of price cuts before even thinking about buying one. Going by past experience it shouldn't be more than a month or two. The suckers who waited in long lines in order to get one on the first day of release got hosed royally. I'm patient and can wait for the inevitable markdowns.

You'll only see a discount if Apple allows AT & T to purchase them with a discount. More than likely you will be looking at the same type of deal - AT & T will just be reselling a device that Apple will have inventory control on, warranty control on, ect. I doubt Apple will make any changes since they get up to 30% of the monthly revenue for the line that has an iPhone active (also explains why you do not get your employer discount - which I agree with if Apple gets a cut)

I do expect the same type of hype as the original and many people calling to complain when their iPhone is getting slow speeds because they went out and brought the new 3G phone but live in an area that is not 3G and didn't bother to check the coverage map before hand

"If you were really one of the 'faithful', you would just keep and tolerate the one you bought before, or be willing to buy a new one at the full price to show your support."

Bye Buy

I can just hear the prices tumbling for the crappy EDGE devices.

I wonder if they will have a removable battery on this?

How would that help Apple sell battery replacements?

doubtful, unless Apple has changed their mind on the design of the device.

New model?

I wonder if this will be an entirely redesigned model, or whether it'll just be the old iPhone with a HSDPA chipset... I suppose knowing Apple they'll probably make a few tweaks to the design, and then release a new iPod touch design that actually doesn't do anything different than the old one (since as an iPod it wouldn't have 3G, 2G, or any G at all).

...Gizmodo?

While I have little doubt there is going to be a 3G iPhone coming very soon, I rarely turn to a site such as Gizmodo for technology news, especially when they have a history of creating bullshit stories with flashy headlines to get pageviews.

Huh? The story missed by only one day. It was announced on Tuesday as opposed to Monday at Macworld. How is that "bullshit?"

Re: ...Gizmodo?

That Gizmodo story was on 12/14/2006... Apple did not announce the iPhone until 01/09/2007. How long is a day where you are from? Anyway...

What was announced on that Monday, 12/18/2006 was the Cisco Linksys iPhone. Cisco had already trademarked the name and released an iPhone before Apple could, and later they agreed to let Apple use the name anyway.

So, Gizmodo was not incorrect in the story, as they never said "Apple to announce..." the iPhone on Monday. But I guess many people felt they were misleading, since the author knew it was the Linksys iPhone.

I seriously doubt they're trying to mislead anyone at this point. With all the European hints about it, the new designs for iPhone cases, etc, I don't see how it's not going to be announced at the next Apple press show.

MMS

Quite frankly, as an iPhone owner the only thing I really want to see is MMS enabled on the iphone. I have yet to hear a acceptable reason as to why its disabled in the first place. The primary reason I jailbroke my phone was to install swirlyMMS since my wife loves sending me picture messages.

The phone supports it, the network supports it...WTF is all I have to say.

No to ESPN

So?

When the iPhony can do push email and has a user changeable battery then I will have some interest. Until then this is just another, although somewhat nice, toy.

push email will be in the June update for the iPhone, i think the apple store will replace your battery, personally I have never owned a phone that had a battery die, I have a old sprint phone from 1998 in my basement junk pile that still holds a charge

Gee, wonder what moved up the date.

With the date being 10 days before Sprints instinct, which from side by side comparison, blows the doors off the whyphone, think Sprint will move up it's release date of the 16th? Why doesn't Sprint get a clue. A phone that can go head to head with the apple phone and they blow it by saying WHEN it was going to be released. Doesn't matter anyway. I rather have a time tested Samsung phone vs one from a computer maker any day. Before anyone comes back and starts blowing chunks about customer service, I've NEVER had a problem with customer service. I've had more problems getting the credit card companies calling me and trying to upsale then I've had with Sprint. They have as far as I'm concern the best network (and fastest) then anyone around. It serves me well.

Re: Gee, wonder what moved up the date.

I've seen and touched a instinct. It's about as retarded as the VZW Voyager. The browser is a bit better but it's not mobile safari by a long shot. It has a smaller thinner screen and while I did not have a iPhone to compare it to it looked to be a little longer though that sprint commercial about it made it seem to be the same length the tilt angle as a bit different.

Either way why bash the iPhone? Price? The rest of the world pays full price for their phones so it surely can not be features.

Bingo. People pay full price for what? A slower, bulkier over priced phone. Mobile Safari? Some people like Linux, some like Vista, some like XP. Seeing the demo's, why would you think Safari is better? I think Apple could but their logo on a rock and people would find it better then the ones in my driveway.

Speculation

It was pretty easy to speculate about June 9th being the date, and even be "pretty sure" about it long ago. It was fairly clear (more from common sense than anything else, although based on various different pieces of information) that a new version of the iPhone would have to come out sometime this summer, about a year after the previous version (to provide things like 3G support at least). Now, what happens during that time period when Apple could make such an announcement? Well, the WWDC. So, to speculate that it would be announced on the first day of it, which is June 9th, would certainly sound pretty convincing and wouldn't really have taken much even long ago, purely based on the timing of it all.
