Real Sues Baseball
Video exclusivity spat with MLB
(old news - 09:18AM Thursday Mar 11 2004)
tags: Video · competition
The Real Networks spat with Microsoft moves into the outfield, as Real files suit (Post Intelligencer) against Major League Baseball for its use of the Window's Media Player to broadcast games. Real seeks unmentioned damages claiming they have exclusive broadcast rights over the organization's on-line MLB.com broadcast service. The suit is part of an ongoing battle between RealPlayer, which controls roughly 19 percent of the market, and Windows Media Player, which controls about 34 percent. Real recently filed a 1 billion dollar antitrust suit against Microsoft, alleging the company used its operating system monopoly as a launch-bed for anti-competitive behavior.

Of course MLB would use something else

Why would anyone want to use Real anyway?

Their crap has become the AOL of media players now... virus-laden junk with poor stability and even worse quality.

Seriously, if MLB wanted a good service, they should have gone with either quicktime or windows media. Choosing real is a literal spit in the face.

/. had an article about how Real failed itself. Alot of the comments made were the same as here.

They do have a POS program and spyware to boot.

Re: Of course MLB would use something else

I don't see Microsoft making Windows Media player for Linux, yet Real Player supports mulitple operating systems.

While it can consume a lot of CPU, I'm no real (no pun intended) fan of Micro$oft Media player either.

Re: Of course MLB would use something else

Well as stated elsewhere on slashdot, XMMS is a far superior media player for linux.

Even XMMS takes alot of process, its because of the decoding, which is a mathmatical burdon on the processor.

What in the world do you mean when you say that the Real Player is "virus laden?"

Just to be sure, I scanned my copy of the executable file and it is clean. It is NOT virus laden.

I don't like Real Player either, but such hyperbole doesn't help the discussion.

That crap on install is a virus. How else can you explain its insistence and bitching unless you make it the default for EVERYthing that you open, and all the blatant ads that pop up within the player, as well as all the other crap it tries to do on startup?

Geez christ, I still have chills of when I first installed Realshittyone. That thing single-handedly hosed an otherwise solid-running machine!

Never again!

Actually, the new Real 10 does absolutely none of that..but it took them a mighty long time to change it.

Real sucks!

I hate that crap. I don't have it installed, nor do I give a crap when I can't view something only provided with Real. Their software is a joke, and they have all of these crazy restrictions.

Hmm, did SCO start something? Do crappy vendors just get the urge to sue their customers because their customers realize there are other technologies/vendors that are just better?

Alternative to Real

For those who might want to play Real files without the hassle of the Real Crapware then a good alternative is Jet Audio player available at »www.jetaudio.com/.

There is a free version that I have on my box that works quite well. I use it mainly only for Real files while using Windows Media player as my default player for everything else.

Re: Alternative to Real

I think its great that Real has these nice little contractis with MLB and American Idol and even some News programs. However, after my experience using Real Player back in the day ............. I have absolutely no desire to install their software on my PC.

The only players I use are WMP9 and QuickTime. Any site that I visit requiring Real and only Real just simply gets passed over.

I despise Real Player, but when the only format available is RM, I use Real Alternative instead.

Interesting math

Okay, so Real + WMP = 55% or so of the market share. What on earth takes up the other 45%? I've seen some winamp-type steaming mp3 sites and such, but are the small niche players really that large of a chunk?

Maybe it's all the porn sites with the off-brand spyware viewers....

What, no NASCAR fans??

While I can agree with some of the negative comments about Real, I have to admit I don't mind paying a little less than $1 a race to get Pit Command and Trackpass so I can supplement the TV coverage of the Busch and Win_oops Nextel Cup races with near-real time tracking of the cars on a representation of the track and a choice of car to crew communications during the race. After using it over a year (since Daytona 2003), I can't say that I have seen any problems with it on my computer. If they are doing anything with any information from my computer, I haven't seen any indication of it. No spam or any advertising other than what I request.

RealOne is Improving

I use Real clips on my media web sites and I get a few complaints from other industry pros about not having another format, complaining that Real is spyware.
I finally wrote a letter to Real and expressed my frustration. I explained that I could not achieve decent quality with MPEG, Quicktime or Windows Media without having to use up to twice the storage space for media files.
They responded with a willingness to recognize the perception problem and that it's a political and marketing issue. Their RealPlayer 10 beta was given to me last year and I tested it on a laptop. It's much better, though it still took 7 minutes to install and required an internet connection to finish installation. But the player works fine, doesn't SPAM me at the end of a clip (provided I unchecked all the options for notification and advertising) and I see no problem using it now.
OTOH, a large number of Windows Media clips I find on the internet do not play. They crash Windows Media Player. Quicktime is awful on a PC too. It doesn't buffer properly, but instead stutters during the first five seconds then makes an awful scrape sound that can damage speakers, then plays the rest of the clip. I end up rewinding to hear the beginning.
Real streams never gave me any trouble. They play, no matter what site I find them on and quality for file size is the best I've seen, better than DiVX, MPEG, QR, WM9, etc.
People just love to have a scapegoat to bash. Real has gotten a little over the top recently with adware, but I think they now realize where they went wrong. They realize that public perception is negative and market share decreasing and it appears they are working to change that.

Well, I a one to say it is a little to late for Real to change now...the word is out and changing now after what...9 version is a bit slow to respond to consumers needs/demands. I for one use QT, Divx, WMP and Winamp. No Real player here. I had Real before and it hogged resource like a pig in a trough.

Re: RealOne is Improving

On two of my machines running Win 2K, I use older versions of RealPlayer with the adware hacked out, based on instructions I received two years ago. Those players never bother me. But I don't see the need to have CD extraction and a whole media center in a player. I expressed that to Real, so hopefully they are going to respond with a scaled-down player without all the bloatware. Real has to understand that we users mostly already have CD rippers and other tools and we don't need to duplicate them when all we want is to hear a media clip on some web site.
Write to Real's staff. They DO listen.

Re: RealOne is Improving

I still like to use old versions of programs. I am still using WinAmp 2.68 the b4 AOL took over version...and it run so much better than the version now. I have an old Opera version and a few other programs. Maybe if they would not have put spyware or malware in the player ppl would be more receptive.
