AOL defends Weatherbug decision
(old news - 10:03AM Monday Apr 19 2004)
tags: privacy · software
After our users had to deal with the twenty four step Wild Tangent removal process, they weren't thrilled to learn AOL would now be piling more bloat onto the quickly ballooning program. The company's decision to bundle Weather Bug with AIM (as noted last week), has again stirred the pot among users of the application, who are tired of having third party applications (that often phone home) shoved in their general direction - even if they can choose not to install them. Betanews reports that AOL modified the existing AIM client "to remedy outstanding privacy issues spawned by the practices of third party vendors who partner with AOL." Huh? One Jupiter analyst is equally press release spin-tastic: "AOL's new approach gives consumers more choice and may better help them understand about how installing one program might include others." Huh?

Another good alternative to AIM is GAIM. It's an GNU/GPL open source alternative that has come a long way in the last few years, and it's available for all major OSes.

Re: GAIM

you're right, I use GAIM and it's come a very long way, now with its 0.76 version, with transparency option, etc.

However, it has some issues with Yahoo! IM, and sometimes crashes under Windows

For anyone interested: »sourceforge.net/projects/gaim/

Re: GAIM

I wish I could agree. One of the most common problems with *IX-developed applications that rely on X is that their authors have absolutely no idea what the "U" in UI stands for.

Also, if you read their Windows port page, you'll find all sorts-of general idiocy, involving blaming buggy DLLs and yadda yadda for what actually look to be bugs with the (absolutely horrid) Win32 port of GTK. All of this cross-platform voodoo could be circumented if X programmers began using wxWindows, sigh...

OK, soooo, how is it just as bad as AOL. You're comparing apples to oranges. Trillian doesn't have any bloat.

Re: Thank God for Trillian

As one of the guys who beta tested both present releases of Trillian Pro, I can assure you Trillian/TPro have bloat. The memory footprint, however, is *incredibly* small, which may be the key focus of what "bloat" is or is not.

I would say Trillian/TPro are memory-friendly, yet as far as the applications themselves go (and their absolutely horrid UI -- it's sad to see a multi-IM client go the way of Winamp 3.x), yeah, they're bloated. I'm still waiting to see some bugs I posted during my beta test phase get resolved. That was years ago... *sigh*

If you're looking for a UI that's less nasty but still has a small memory footprint, you can try Miranda. However, if you encounter any issues you consider problematic, buggy, or generally unpleasant, do not bother contacting the authors -- you'll be banned from their forum, and your Emails will go ignored.

Free Trillian latest version/latest build works fine for me. The only thing that has ever been an issue is file tranfers and that was a router problem on my end. Otherwise, Trillian is perfect for people who are looking for spyware/bloatware free instant message clients.

Just so you know trillian is just as bloated, just not with spyware. Trillian is a major memory hog and the authors have installed a very annoying adware popup that informs you how long you've been using the software and that they want you to purchase the pro version. It will annoy you at random times so you can't predict when you might see it but its very annoying as it will popup when you are trying to type to someone. I dropped Trillian and went with Miranda which has plugins for everything and uses so much less memory than trillian. Just my opinion but Miranda is the best multi-protocol client out there.

I just got my new computer today from HP/Compaq. Went and downloaded the NEW AIM and i had the option to install both Weather Bug and the Gaming software right at the start of the install. IF you do not watch and just keep clicking next they will be installed as the check boxes are already marked as YES.

So its not a bad thing. At LEAST you do get the option to install them or not.

Trillian works for me

Not only being able to run all clients in one window, just knowing that its the ONLY program installed makes me rest easier. I hate piggyback applications that come along for the ride on someone elses software. IF I WANTED IT, I would have installed it!

Why the hell go with the 5.5 spyware version of AIM? Just stick with the old 5.2, and all is well.

I would actually stick with AIM 4.8 w/ DeadAIM but 4.8 has borked file transfers under a router, so I'm at 5.2...which is not bad, but 4.8 is still 'lighter.'

Have fun installing AIM

Installing AIM now is like a game. You get to hunt for things AIM changed in your system and undo them

I still use AIM, but that's because I can remove and or prevent AIM from installing all its extra junk. AIM just loves when I copy notepad.exe onto its weatherbug, AOD and other installation files and then write protect them

But I would never recommend AIM to a computer novice.

Re: Have fun installing AIM

all of this crapware aim installs is just another way for them to abuse their relatively "novice" user base. most aol users dont even know what is on their computer, let alone know the damage it could do. last i saw on tv they had a slogan saying "sanatized for your protection" and i just laughed. NO AOL I DO NOT NEED MY INTERNET SANATIZED JUST BECAUSE EVERYONE ON YOUR NETWORK IS A COMPUTER ILLITERATE NEWBIE. sure makes me glad i stuck with a small, localized provider that doesnt force its users to install bloatware browsers and crapware dialers. its no wonder they are still losing customers reguardless of what they do..... soon enough you will see the aol browser/dialer combo in the next ad-aware updates XD

@attbi.com

5.5 is great

Wow there is alot of whiners here. Go back to 30 meg drives if you think everything is considered bloat, its going more and more that way, with 160 gig drives I could care or less. Feed the horse.

Yeah, I am still using 4.8 as well. When others started getting movie trailers in their AIM I said NO WAY!

I also refuse to use RealONE and many other new versions, but that is subject for another topic.
