Still Hyping 2.5G
Cingular, meet wall, writing
by Karl Bode Wednesday 21-Apr-2004 tags: wireless · bandwidth
Cingular really wants you to be excited about their deployment of "Enhanced Data for GSM Environments" (EDGE) technology in South Florida, despite the fact the technology may become obsolete in its prime. The company even goes so far in the press release as to call it "true" third-generation (3G) wireless, when the technology doesn't even meet the FCC's minimum requirements to be called "3G" - even under the best of circumstances. Cingular and AT&T Wireless are in an interesting spot; their respective (soon to be collective) EDGE offerings barely scrape 130kbps for around $80 a month, while Nextel's Flash OFDM (1.5Mbps at $75 a month) and Verizon's EvDO (300-500kbps at $80 a month) networks are slowly heading nationwide in billion dollar deployments.

Nextel stock?

I hope Cingular and ATT execs can dump some of their options and buy some Nextel stock. I know I would.

1.5mbps? Wow.

Anybody actually getting these speeds? If so, are there usage limits or other constrainst (technical or administrative) that make it infeasible to use Nextel as a primary connection?

Re: 1.5mbps? Wow.

Well, these networks are in the theoretical/experimental stage. So you might, if you either worked for the company...

Really, the system isn't setup yet. I know verizon has a *small* test network in San Diego and another one on the east coast but that's it. No where near nationwide yet. Its their gunny pig test market, to see how well the stuff works in "real life".

As for the other two, I haven't heard about *anything* being up and functional yet. Their technologies are still in the lab.

Re: 1.5mbps? Wow.

Actually, no....

Nextel just opened up their North Carolina trial for Flash OFDM to the public last week:

»3G Killer

Both nextel and Verizon have billions booked for a fairly speedy deployment. Now, if "fairly speedy" is anything like their fiber deployments, we'll see these services in 2010. But I think since they have fewer regulatory issues when it comes to wireless, there's no reason not to have both Flash OFDM and EvDO networks in the top 100 urban markets within 2 years.

Re: 1.5mbps? Wow.

OK guys/gals ... thx for the clarity. Sounded too good to be true. The article makes it sound like these services are established just not yet widely deployed when, in fact, they aren't established much of anywhere.

Re: 1.5mbps? Wow.

Well they are "established just not widely deployed". That's accurate.

Verizon's EvDO is in San Diego and Washington D.C. It has been reviewed and real world business users indicate it delivers the speeds it promises (upload is a little stingy, though). Likewise Lucent has received half a billion dollars from Verizon to deploy Wi-FI that piggybacks on EvDO hardware....the money is there, the technology works. Verizon has promised 30% deployment by year's end. We'll see.

The Nextel trial covers 1,300 square miles in North Carolina and is available at the moment to over a million people. That's further behind EvDO, but I've seen nothing to indicate Flash OFDM doesn't deliver. Looks pretty good, and with 20ms latency, it actually might compete with some landline providers.

Both are far beyond lab testing, but yeah, it will still be a year or two.

Re: 1.5mbps? Wow.

OK, thx Karl. I won't hold my breath 'till Nextel brings here to northern NH. Does anyone know what sorta usage caps are associated with the monthly costs mentioned?

Re: 1.5mbps? Wow.

With Nextel you can pay $75 with no usage caps, or $35 a month for a 150MB monthly cap....

I'm not sure about the Verizon offering, and I'm pretty sure AT&T Wireless's and Cingular's EDGE is unlimited....

LOL

They will probably continue to deploy them in highly dilutted urban markets where there are tons of choices already. There still needs to be an alternative to people outside of major cities and roadways to have broadband . Nextel offers little coverage nationwide so it will not appeal to many if it is deployed in their network, just as Sprint PCS's have not.

Cingular still blows either way. TDMA. GSM, we can't make up our mind.... Anything from SBC blows. Especially within the time frames they give.

hmm..

Well I use Cingular and I have the Samsung S307 (GSM/GPRS) phone and I was wondering If EDGE would work with it since I am in South Florida? I use the GPRS web browser on it as well.

EDGE and POP3

I just got a Sony Ericsson GC82 EDGE card with the "all you can eat" data connect package through Cingular. I can recieve but not send e-mail. Does anyone know what the outgoing SMTP settings are? No one at Cingular seems to know. Since they don't include a mail acct. with the service does that mean there aren't any SMTP settings?
