story category San Antonio's 6Mbps Roadrunner
Tier so far only available in one market
(old news - 10:07AM Tuesday Apr 27 2004)
tags: bandwidth · cable
While Time Warner and Roadrunner have begun offering 6Mbps/512kbps cable service in the San Antonio area, there's currently no indication the tier will make its way to any other market. Users in San Antonio can sign up for the $70 tier, but customers from our Roadrunner forum who have called in to see if the tier will be available in their city have received little more than shoulder shrugging. While San Antonio may be a test market, it also may simply be an anomaly. While most cable companies operate in a fairly unified fashion, Time Warner and Roadrunner have enforced caps (see letter), offered new tiers, and even tinkered with prices in some markets but not in others.

Man, and as soon as other cable and DSL companies start moving and start rolling out 6M service it'll take Charter 1-2 years to catch up Always one step behind the competition.

Makes me wonder if RR has been nuilding this up for a while. Their speed rating numbers for the Phoenix and San Diego area had been abnormally higher than avergae for quite a while before the announcement.

There are also quite a few other companies operating cable networks with higher bandwidth (OOL for example). Hopefully this forces the rest of the cable operators to take notice.

Huh? Phoenix & San Diego are CoxHSI territory - and rest assured not enjoying any panacea of connectivity.

In my area when ??

People need to remember that the different Time Warner franchises across the country operate independently of one another.

Re: In my area when ??

I'm holding an advertisement a customer of ours in SC received from Time Warner/RR for "Business Class" broadband that offers all the way up to 6.0/2.0 for $999.95/mo! Expensive, but compare to a 1.5/1.5 DS1 circuit and the price is favorable. From experience though I'd have to give the nod to the T-1 over the cable in the rock-solid department though...

Exactly. San Antonio most likely rolled this out to say they offer a speed as fast as the SBC DSL 6Mbit plan.

Most likely this will not be seen anywhere else outside of the SBC service area.

Re: In my area when ??

Exactly. TW offered this service in SA because it is SBC's hometown. This is about as useful (outside of SA) as a campaign promise....

Yes they do but speeds role out across the country at different times. I contacted RoadRunner Customer Service/Tier 2 for my area and they told me if those services are starting to be released in other areas to expect them in other areas by the end of the year.

But also SA does not have anything on their web site about these speeds at all like the other TWC areas.

Take note, Adelphia.

That service (in terms of bandwidth) beats the hell out of the package adelphia offers: 4000/512 @ $90!

Oh yea, hopefully Adelphia upgrades to these speeds (or beyond).
