Lower your ping time! (old news - 05:54PM Friday Sep 22 2000)
SPEAKEASY, Flashcom and Capunet have all notified customers that RADSL (608/128 and 1500/384) lines from Covad are now Interleaving free, reducing ping time by about 30ms-40ms. This comes as good news for gamers, we discussed this problem back in May in two articles on Latency. The technical term for this is switching to FAST PATH DMT. For Flashcom and Speakeasy, it seems the upgrade is automatic. Capunet customers need to email noc@capu.net with subject including the words FAST PATH. For other Covad ISPs, existing RADSL customers may have to request the upgrade by asking their ISP to arrange it.

| Re: Lower your ping time! Some of these customers who are switched to fast cell will be loosing sync completely, or more frequently or may have to leave with reduced throughput due to packet retransmissions. Interleaving makes the lines more robust by employing forward error correction (FEC) codes.
I bet, some will need to be switched back to interleaved setup again. I hope Covad is prepared to maintain fast/interleaved setup per customer or they are going to irate some customers and may lose some of them if they only support fastcell now.

| Re: Lower your ping time! True, True on switching back. I was switched over to Fast Path with my provider (Sprint), and at first all was great. 78ms Dr. Ping time from 124, 16ms to first hop from 60. BUT, my throughput went from 434/107 to 429/35 on a 512/128 provisioned line. Any advantage, during gaming, that I got from the switch I lost in throughput. Toulnay, if you have any suggestions on how I could have the best of both worlds, or a good compromise, I would appreciate your comments. The three days I did get good pings & throughput I rocked. -- Al Gore: It's my money & I want it back! | |

I am with Speakeasy and was switched over. I have the 1500/384 RADSL. I went from 150ms to 9ms to my DNS and I only dropped from 1307 down, which is the best I ever got, to average 1290 down, with the up staying the same. I am 15th in the top 30 DoctorPing with a 38.5ms and that is with the 10 faster than me using cable or SDSL: http://www.dslreports.com/beta/doctorping. I have been on this for approx. a month now, zero downtime, and loveit! Screen shot of pings do DNS over a 12 hour period: http://www.speakeasy.org/~ronnieg/pp1.jpg
I am editing this 9/23 11:18am edt because I see that just after I posted the link above to the top/bottom 30 doctor ping results last night the page is gone. Now when you click that link you get sent to the main doctor ping page instead of the top 30 results page. Strange as soon as I linked to those results no more page. Maybe it is being worked on, maybe.

| Well, I don't know what you guys are talking about. I got my 1500/384 ADSL switched to Fast Path and I've gotten a ping of 4, and all of my downloads are faster, I have much less packetloss, and my speed test results have all been increased from 1200/250 to 1350/380. So, I'm nothing but thrilled. This is a big step for Covad, one that people have been waiting for for a long time. HOORAY!! God Bless, El Supremo | |

| Concentric doesn't know what Interleaving is.....
I called them about it, they said that I am stuck (but he didn't know what the word meant) I am on the new RADSL bridge after moving across town and getting a new line. My old DSL line (with concentric) was faster. I have screen shots of 10ms hops across Concentrics network on the old line. Now with the RADSL I am getting 50-70ms hops. grrrr.

| Earthlink/Mindspring are unofficially doing it too If you are an Earthlink/Mindspring DSL subscriber with Covad, you can call their DSL Tech Support, get yourself transferred to a Level 2 Tech (just ask the Level 1 guy to pass you on), and request a switch to Fast Packet Switching. It takes about 24 hours for Covad to get it done on their end, but then it's Quake Real Fast(tm)!!
Note that no one at Earthlink/Mindspring is going out of their way to "officially" announce this, but it is being done. All you have to do is ask.

| Re: Earthlink/Mindspring are unofficially doing it too I have Mindspring/Covad. I just got switched to Fast Path DMT. The L2 tech I spoke with was reluctant to call Covad but did so after 5 mins of arguing. Put me on hold for 5 more mins and came back on the line. "Your line will be reprovisioned in 24-48 hours." It turns out to 4 hours later when my 5260 RESYNCED itself out of nowhere. I check the tracerts and am now getting 14ms gateway. I am getting the usual speeds 1300/328 no packetloss (so far) 3000ft from CO.

| Re: Lower your ping time!
In truth, all lines which are reprovisioned by Covad for any reason will automatically switch to fast-path and all newly installed lines will use fast-path by default. At CapuNet, we have decided to request reprovisioning on a per-user basis. Since we first uncovered this issue soon after interleaved DMT came to market, we have been sensitive to the effects of circuit-type switching on our client's lines. Since the long term effects of fast-path DMT are not known, we have decided to migrate customers on a per-request basis at least until we are satisfied with the process. So far, we have seen latency reductions of 30-60ms, with lowest latencies approaching 10ms for clients who had experienced 50ms pings to the gateway. These are on par with latencies offered to our SDSL clients. Our beta users have reported excellent results. The question of whether interleaving did offer better line stability remains unanswered. It is clear that fast-path has the potential of offering less stability and possibly lower sync rates, but tests have not been conclusive. So far, we have not seen significantly lower sync rates, and most clients have not seen a reduction in bandwidth. You must remember that RADSL service can sync at a different rate each time your line re-syncs for any reason. For some, the differences can be dramatic. Do not assume the results of your first sync following the switch to fast-path DMT will be an accurate representation of your best sync rate.
Enjoy the better gaming! -John Dvorak CTO, CapuNet
| | | Anon | Re: Lower your ping time! Uhmn, Since the first day i was switched to the NYC gateway , I have had 10ms to my gateway constantly. Day and night, speeds might have moved up or down (not anymore 1.3mbit down perm) but ping time was never an issue after i moved to the new gateway, btw my ping time to my action quake server in nj is 20ms, yes thats right iam one wicked LPB! | |
| | Anon | Does the interleaving effect IDSL or is primarily an xADSL thing? Before I go through the whole contacting of my isp (which is normally a nightmare) I want to make sure it is something that is directly effecting my idsl.
Thanks in advance. | |

- From the information that I have received from my ISP, Speakeasy, this will only help (x)RADSL. I was also told that even though it is applied there is no guarantee that there will be improvement. From all the people that I know that have had it applied to their accounts, all of them have seen an improvement. Speakeasy may just be thinking ahead by saying there is no guarantee so they won't get negative feedback from a customer thats see's no improvement.

| I'm a SpeakEasy customer using the NYC gateway and have not seen the improved ping times. When I questioned SpeakEasy support about this I got this response:
"For all new RADSL circuits, Fast Path is already in place. Looking at your install date, I am going to have them double check your circuit. July - September installs are being manually checked."
So I guess this means if you don't see the improvement, contact support because some manual intervention may be required.
| | | Anon | Re: Lower your ping time! I have been trying to deal with Voyager.net because they use Covad. I have the speedstream 5260 and Voyager says they don't know anything about an upgrade. I talked to Covad and they said talk to Voyager. Now wonder why the government is looking into these DSL companies. | |
| | Anon | I called Earthlink/Mindspring tech support about this, and tier I tech told me that (1) removing interleaving would remove error correction, thus making dropped connections more likely to happen, and (2) that once Covad made the change to fast path, they could not (or would not) change it back. Since I'm not a gamer, and am getting consistent 1.2 down/250 up, I wonder if I should just keep things as they are (if it ain't broke don't fix it). The tech agreed. Any suggestions? | |

| That's to bad, I already cancelled my Speakeasy/Covad DSL. They should have thought about latency problems 6 months ago when I told'em that was the problem. I still would exercise caution when signing up for Speakeasy. They use these Redback routers that have a habit of rebooting themselves. When that happens you DSL will be down for HOURS!!!! | |

| Hi all, can anyone help me lower my ping times? I just signed up for @Home cable, not only for fast Internet surfing, but also for online gaming. And the ping is worse then my dail-up was! My first two hops are fast (about 10ms) but then the next 8 hops are horrible (about 400-500ms).
Is there anything I can do on my end, such as Registry tweaks, or other Windows NT settings which will help?
Thanks! | |
