Many cities still have them and are allowed to have them.
As long as the company is are "grand fathered" in the government won't buge especially if its a local cable company.
The city i live in had this. TWC tried for years to get in even tried to sue but it was thrown out of court. but the local company ended up selling to TWC so now we got them.
Also cities can stop companies for using their poles if they own them and pass laws to stop people and companies from digging like they have done in Duluth MN.
Pass laws that say companies can not use the poles on streets and dig holes to put in cable and you have it made.
Duluth pays an anti-trust fine every year but its not as near as what they'd lose if they'd let other companies come in with services they stop like Gas and other services that use cable under the ground

Usually the infras were developed under monopolies (bells, high-voltage) controlled by state PUCs - not local munis. Those infra (the poles being critical, of course) continue to be under de-regulation influences - so it does vary regionally. In all cases, however, non-compete clauses are time limited - they don't go on indefinitely.

| Not the first time... Ameritech did this a few years ago in my area. Their "Americast" cable TV product was pretty good. They built a brand new network capable of handling all of the newest technologies, but never offered anything more than analog basic service!
Luckily, the sold off the franchise to WOW, who came in and started offering digital cable, Internet, and soon VoIP. | |

Columbus, OH used to be Americast cable. I'd be nice to see if the network is still able to run if it wasn't taken down and fire it back up. | |

WOW hasn't taken anything down, and has been offering their services since they first bought it. I should know, I'm on a WOW Internet connection right now. I could go out in my backyard and take pictures of my cable connection, with Ameritech labels on the cable and the box on the side of my house. | |

They're not saving the customer anything. Except anyone that doesn't like Insight or TWC or Bright House where ever WOW is with them. WOW is just going to provide higher fees. | |

You seem to enjoy making unsubstantiated claims. Please back that up with real numbers. I can tell you for a fact in my area, WOW is cheaper than Comcast. Comcast's Internet is $57.95 for 3000/256, plus modem rental. WOW's Ultra is $54.99 for 4000/500, plus modem rental. Even with WOW's $2.50 modem rental, it's still cheaper than bringing your own modem to Comcast.
If you get into the TV/Internet bundles, you'll see even more savings. These are facts, not just my own unfounded opinions. | |

Either way our packages are stil cheaper. With WOW i'd be paying almost $130 for the same thing i pay TWC $90 per month with RR included and that includes taxes. which we only get taxed 1 time and that is local tax. | |

It is comming. VZ is placing and splicing fiber like crazy. I belive their goal is to pass 1 million homes this year and even more next year. The three markets I know of are: MD, VA and TX. I don't know what will be handed off to the customer but the "carrier" will be running at 622mbs down and 155 mbs up on individual fibers to each customer from a hub placed in their neighborhood. | |

Verizon was installing all the stuff and actually (it appeared so, I am far from an expert on Fiber) pulling the fiber in my already existing neighborhood. They tore the hell out of my neighbors yard, haha. I just hope this stuff goes active soon. I had Verizon DSL before I moved and bought this house in another area here in Keller and it rocked. YMMV.
Bring it already Verizon, I want to be done with Charter. I pay Charter 131.66 a month for DVR, Gold internet, basic expanded and HBO. | |

So that's who bought them. That was one suck-ass system. My Dad had this 5 pound cable modem, presumably pre-DOCSIS. It was a Bay/Nortel "LANCity". GTE was an interesting telco. They actually tried "innovation" now and again; the reason the service was so bad (at least on the data side) is that the system was built back when this cable modem thing was still "new". VZ then bought GTE and never really put any money in it.

--Verizon runs splashy commercials all over the media, proclaiming the wonders of their new Cable Service;
-- 2/3's of prospective customers try to order it, but get a "Future Cable Notification Form" page instead: "Verizon Cable TV is not available at your address. Our network is constantly expanding, so enter your name and email address and when our network reaches you in a century or so, we'll let you know";
-- Verizon executives go to D.C. and make impassioned speeches about how Verizon Cable would suceed, if only lawmakers would give them yet another sweetheart regulatory deal ("hey, I know we've never kept our word before, but we promise this time is different").
