Cancels contract with BPL ISP over support
(old news - 12:01PM Wednesday Jun 02 2004)
tags: alternatives · BPL
The nation's first major "BPL (broadband via power line) wired city", Manassas, Virginia (see previous report), had hoped to offer speeds between 560kbps and 1Mbps via power-lines. According to this local Manassas paper however, the deal they struck with "Prospect Street Broadband" will be terminated, as the city and the company couldn't agree on how they wanted the system to work. Among the points of contention were the city's request that the support center be located locally, while Prospect wanted to support customers remotely. At the moment, some 200 users currently subscribe to the system, which should be available to every city resident by this fall.

remotely?

so I guess the solution even cheaper then offshoring support to india would be offshoring support to Rigil-9. I mean, theres very little investment needed, setup a big radio telescope, let the peeps at Rigil-9 figure it out. Support wait times will be a little longer per say ~20 million years for a response, but hey, they were able to cut their expenses by .0350%!!!

Re: remotely?

Remotely doesn't always mean India. It could be done in another state.

Exactly. But one assumption that is safe to make is REMOTELY = CHEAPER.

It would still be easier then dealing with Dell Support.

Follow the leader

Hopefully other BPL's will follow. Leave Broadband to the experts ...oh yeah ...IMO!

WTH?

I don’t understand why we are attempting to use obscure technologies that obviously are going to have a hard start up issues to solve the broadband availability problems. We have plenty of existing technology that could solve these problems. We have successfully established satellite internet connectivity correct? Over 65,000 miles away? So why does no one use it – simple, latency...The latency is created from the packet travel distance being so long correct? So why not bring that distance down? This could be accomplished by intermingle terrestrial technologies with satellite technologies. Erect towers at DSL and Cable end locations for further relays. Better yet, if the government wants to get so involved why not regulate Cell towers and let providers bounce satellite signals off them? I cant get DSL or cable but I got hella awesome cell signal at my house. Any reason why this won't work?

Re: WTH?

Because uncle sam has to step in and 90 % of this country won't allow that they are afraid of 1984 coming true.

Welcome to the united states of corporations. you have no say in thier goverment so sit still shut up and pay your bills. Sad day when a goverment for the people by the people doesn't even get to really vote for our president.

Re: WTH?

At least in "1984" all the opression came from an evil monolith of a state with a single face: big brother.
Here and now, faceless corporations bribe our supposed representatives to get at money directly though undeserved cost plus contracts and indirectly by letting them practice any criminal fraud they like against consumers.
I'd say we could use Bush Jr.'s face, but I dont think he could carry Big Brother's hypothetical jockstrap!

Yeah. Money. There have been several proposals to do Broadband-via-Cellular. They are not economically feasible. If they were, you wouldn't be able to escape the marketing hype.

As for erecting towers, have you ever actually tried to get a permit to do that for more than a few tens of feet tall? The places where people live--and therefore the potential customers--are loathe to issue building permits for more towers. The cellular companies have polluted the landscape so badly with ill-designed sites in the last ten years that it's almost impossible to get a new one approved.

Call your cellular provider. I'm sure they'll be happy to sell you something to get online with.

Re: WTH?

Just saw a new cell tower the other day.
It caught my eye cause it was painted a deep green and had FAKE limbs with fake leaves on them.
No, i am not remotely kidding.
And it was much more an eyesore than the usual grey steel towers dotting the landscape.

Looked like a 300 ft. alien pine tree with the mange.

Re: WTH?

That's exactly the kind of crap I'm talking about...

Sprint stealth-erected a 110-footer near here on a church's parking lot without a proper permit. Guess what? They put a horizontal section near the top and claimed religious persecution (I am not kidding) when Cook County forced them to take the whole thing down.

Sealth Cell Towers: Trees

In my community there was even a fight by residents after they agreed to use a cell tower that looks like a tree...that it was the wrong kind of tree. It was a lodge pole pine and there were no others of that type around.

The Chicken are coming home to roost

Good news maybe Manassas will sign up a REAL broadband provider.
