WinMX Awakes
New round of betas announced
P2P application WinMX was popular when released in 2002, though the spyware free client hasn't seen an update since October of that year. According to the WinMX website, a new round of betas is currently being offered after the multi-year hiatus. All of the changes in the new version are listed here at the client download page. The timetable of the various beta releases is available here.

Wow, man... I forgot about this thing!

WinMX used to be Awesome, and definitely had replaced everything that was good about Napster and the then-Scour Exchange. the service was great, but there had been like no updates to it... I thought it was discontinued.

Hopefully this is the beginning of some new much-needed tuning up for the app though. While it was great back then, it was imperfect.

No Attention Please

Now watch the RIAA start to pay attention to WINMX. I was happy to see that they were going after Kazaa and other P2P's. I would recommend using leechammer to weed out the unfriendly.

Yeah, because no other site has this story and the RIAA only checks this site .

At least the "hunters" that RIAA hired knows a lot of about p2p networks. People, RIAA isn't doing crap except legal paper work. They hire other organizations for bounty huntin!

as long as other apps remain more popular winMX will remain under the radar for the most part. Kazaa and Bittorrent are taking the heat atm.

Rather pointless to put out a new beta of WinMX at this point. If you've checked it out recently, then you know that the WinMX network is virtually a ghosttown.

The client is very nice, even the old non-beta one, but the RIAA doesn't even need to bother with it. It's already died of neglect.

Well, about time

At least they are awake again. Although the current beta doesn't appear to be much (3.52) with just minor upgrades to the chat channels, and browse/whois functions. The next version 3.55 will be interesting though, with a complete makeover to the search system and 3.60 being even more advanced hopefully finding all rare songs and eliminating file mismatches. Although according to the site 3.60 will not be released for a long time since it will require a complete network overturn.

Still good to see they're still improving.

I hear that; just hope I won't need to resort to using mIRC if things start getting a little messy on the network.

Doh!

Oh great job...

Now it's only a matter of months until WinMX turns into today's Kazaa...

Some people should learn to keep their mouths shut because it sucks having to change programs every so often because of these free program companies selling out to advertisers.

Sigh, when will we ever learn?

Re: Doh!

i agree whole heartedly. while all the teenie boppers went to kazaa i strongly touted winmx to everyone i dealt with. now... just bring more attention to an already decent network that doesn't need all the advertisers or RIAA looking at it.

Will the new beta work with LeecHammer?

Last night I logged onto WinMX 3.31 for the first time in
about a year and a half. For the past month or so I have
been zipping most of my mp3s to get below the 5000 file
limit for a primary connection, and I finally finished.
After all that, there's no way I'm going to let anyone
sharing 0 files (leeching) upload from me, so I also ran
LeecHammer, which also appears to have been revived. I'm
hoping that the new betas don't "break" LH, otherwise I'll
stick with 3.31 until a new version of it comes out. But
there are some improvements Frontcode could make with the
upcoming 4.0 version. One of the biggest is the way the
queues are handled. If you disconnect from the network
or your connection changes, anyone in your queue who
isn't currently uploading times out. The other thing
they need to change is the 5000 file limit, at least for
a primary connection. Many OpenNap servers have a 10,000
file limit.

Re: Will the new beta work with LeecHammer?

I can't get Leechammer to work with the beta so I will go back to 3.31 until leechammer ver G come out. Instead of zipping music have you tried Album Wrapper? Save as the title with ALBW at the end. When people search for music, the ALBW files would tell them that the file is extractable with the free extractor.

Re: Will the new beta work with LeecHammer?

I've tried using Albumwrap, but it is slow, won't work
if there are no ID3 tags (many of my mp3s have none),
and it sometimes trashes the tags upon extraction. I
found using WinRAR to zip whole albums is far easier.
The way I've found to get around the lack of tag info
is to also share tracklist files, by genre or subgenre,
and zip them as well so that they're small enough to
upload without queueing (less than 32 KB). Perhaps 40-50
or so files in my library are tracklists - compiling
them and getting the bitrate/encoding info using encspot,
as well as artist & title is what took the most time, but
I finally finished it after a month.

Re: Will the new beta work with LeecHammer?

Albumwrap rocks. Slow? No way. Wraps just a fast as winzip/winrar zips. Never had it mess up ID3tags. That's all I used to share was ALBW's. Only have about 30 left now. Still pop open WinMx once in a while. Can still find stuff on there once in a while. Little late on rejuvinating it now.

WInMX Forever

Ive been using WinMx for a long time, even till now because the program still runs strong even after being as old as it is. You still find mostly everything you want. Though I'm not too crazy about this new exposure they are trying to create. I could do with out the updates as long as the RIAA doesn't hop on their johnson for being popular. Oh well, hopefully, that won't happen.

Re: cool

I love WinMX. I have been using it for close to 3 years. It's the ONLY P2P app I use for music. I use IRC and Bit Torrent for movies/games/applications. But IMHO WinMX rocks, no RIAA (yet), good music, rarely virus's or wrong names. I just hope that it stays the way it is now, I like a simple client that doesn't attract a lot of attention causing the RIAA to come after it.

I also hope the newer versions deal with all the hacks that have invaded the program, still allow the mxmonitor plugin and fix the memory leak issues.

Fast-Track is a dying network, I would suggest giving Shareaza a try:)

BitTorrent is also a very good P2P system with many good clients

»azureus.sourceforge.net Azureus, the only good Java program:p

»bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent This is the official client.

»www.bittornado.com BitTornado is also very good
