Lompoc Goes Muni
Multi-million dollar wireless and fiber plan
by Karl Bode Saturday 10-Jul-2004 tags: Fiber · wireless · municipal
"This is cutting-edge stuff," says Lompac, California city consultant Mark McKibben, who is upgrading the city with a shiny new multi-million dollar fiber and wireless deployment. First will be the installation of a million dollar wireless network, followed by a $25 million investment in fiber optic connectivity. "All we have right now is dsl though covad (verizon, earthlink, etc)" notes one eager Lompoc resident who e-mailed us the article. Yes, it makes the mistake of saying 1.5 to 2mbps is "50 times faster than anything available in Los Angeles".

Bear in mind that in Miami, you probably have more options avaliable to you then the people living in Lompoc. Your residents probably have cable, dsl, and wireless available to them. Bellsouth is doing tests right now for FTTH but I do not know when, how, if that will even go well.

ya i have bellsouth which is like the DSL Nazi(TM) Group... Adelphia... which literally goes out every day from around 10am to 3pm... and wireless? i guess you mean cellular? my T-Mobile phone dosent even work in my house, no signal at all... my friends AT&T phone is the same, no Nextel coverage either... only thing ive seen work here is Verison with a whopping 1 bar...

and im in a highly populated area surrounded by commercial areas and next to a major highway

trust me if there is an area where companies definately dont want to risk the bottom line its here...

LOL. It was not too long ago that I was saying, "gee I wish had more than 56K." My only real complaint with my ISP is that my upload speed does not = my download speed. If it did, I would be happy.

Great, Fantastic !

This is the whole point with muni's. The TELCO's and
Cable-Co's all they think about it giving the least for the most. With elected city officials they will listen to what their constituents want or get voted out of office. It will be the geek in the computer department that will say "well cool this is what we need". There are enough good people out there laid off by the TELCO's the city could hire the people to supervise the installation and then run the system.

My 2 cents

With all the money problems California has, you would think they would spend the money on something useful. Not to say the people should not have a cheap, reliable, and fast broadband service. It's just the government should not be in the broadband business.
