NTT DoCoMo fourth generation wireless
(old news - 10:40AM Friday Jun 04 2004)
tags: wireless · bandwidth
While wireless junkies in the states await third generation (3G) speeds, researchers in Japan have already achieved 300Mbps downstream via new fourth generation (4G) technology, according to Network World Fusion. The experiment consisted of a car running at 30 kilometers per hour at a range of between 800 meters and 1 kilometer from the 4G base station. On average, provider NTT DoCoMo says they achieved speeds of 135Mbps. The company conceded that the speeds were under very particular conditions, and noted that they still "only" planned to provide 4G connectivity at speeds around 100Mbps in real world applications.

Always

Looking to tomorrow. We probably won't even really get 3G before 4G phones start popping into stores.

Unless it is cheap...

Current data usage is too expensive. Unless the cell providers give up nickel and dime, my cell phone will remain voice only gadget...

In Japan, they use their cell phones (keitai) for everything that we would typically do on a computer: WWW access, e-mail, video conferencing, pictures, etc. In the U.S., we use cell phones for phone calls, period. The main difference has to do with how our respecive societies move around.

For example, in Japan, most people use mass transit to get around and can dedicate their attention to their phones. In the U.S., however, most people drive cars and can't (or, more properly, shouldn't) dedicate that same level of attention to their phones.

Wireless Broadband? I can see it dimly

Well, I'll be... Some people have all the luck in the world, getting 100+Mbps over cellular is really a huge leap forward... Go Japan!
Of course, the US will not get such nifty improvements until all wireless operators decide on a single cellular standard (such as GSM in Europe) and develop it in a consistent way. That's what Japan has achieved: one cellular standard plus sustained research gives you LAN speeds over wireless. I hope this serves as a hint for Cingular, AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless to invest in wireless infrastructure. Otherwise soon we can forget all that and use NTT DoCoMo in the US, coz they will take over the operations of some of the wireless operators.
