In Japan, they use their cell phones (keitai) for everything that we would typically do on a computer: WWW access, e-mail, video conferencing, pictures, etc. In the U.S., we use cell phones for phone calls, period. The main difference has to do with how our respecive societies move around.
For example, in Japan, most people use mass transit to get around and can dedicate their attention to their phones. In the U.S., however, most people drive cars and can't (or, more properly, shouldn't) dedicate that same level of attention to their phones. -- I use conjecture and hearsay.
