Scam Alert: Juice Boost
The 2Mbps spam curing wonder technology
(old news - 10:27AM Friday Aug 06 2004)
tags: trouble · spam · scam
From the scam of a lifetime department: A spammer in our Broadband Tweaks forum is pushing a referral scam service called Juice Boost, which promises users 2Mbps speeds for free, anywhere there's a phone line, using "State-of-the-art data compression, byte stream and ultimate data burst technology". The service also promises you'll never see a blank page, a piece of spam, or a worm again, or the company will pay you.

While our users might smell a rat immediately, would your parents? Grandparents? According to the website, the technology, which is currently in beta, "Works with any PC or MAC of the lowest specification believable". So those of you still running a 133Mhz relic won't be excluded from the party.

Of course it's simply dial-up compression software with a coat of paint at the foundation of a pyramid scam, but the promises made by the technology include some of the most outlandish and amusing claims we've ever seen.

While users who visit the site won't see these claims, users who respond to a particular referral code - usually provided in e-mail or message board spam - will. We've omitted that code to keep the referrer from making any money for links. You can however buy their product on e-bay if getting ripped off was on your action-item list for today.

Here's some of the promises you'll see when you log in from a referrer:

"Speed up a dialup connection to over broadband speeds for FREE."

"Speed up a broadband connection to 2MB for FREE."

"Save money by disconnecting broadband and using JUICE for FREE."

"Make your Internet experience more pleasurable."

"You will never see another dead, blank or irrelevant page ever again and if you do, we will pay you £500 GBP*."

"You will NOT get another spam email EVER, but if you do we will pay you £100 GBP* in compensation."

"You are guaranteed to get a minimum connection speed of 2MB with 100% uptime. If we fail to meet either or both we will pay you £500 GBP* per failure."

"YOU will NEVER receive a virus or worm in your email inbox again as we operate up to the millisecond software to stop the same, but if you do get one we will pay you £500 GBP* compensation."

"JUICE is able to block every porn and adult site on the Internet if you choose to filter it and if we fail you we will pay you £200 GBP* per reported instance."

"That's how confident JUICE is," the site proclaims. "We can STOP your child from chatting to people who pretend to be children in chat rooms by using amazing breakthrough IP filtration and parenthesis technology."

Parenthesis technology! Where do we sign up?

The site reads

like it was written by a child. In another thread this site came up...this is my favorite line from the site.

said by Juice:
JUICE is a software download which utilises a unique 23 patent approved compression technology that increases your existing Internet connection speed to way past faster than broadband.

State-of-the-art data compression, byte stream and ultimate data burst technology now guarantees every Internet user an unbelievable lightening connection speed of 2MB.

im sorry but how exactly does this add up to a scam? I am just not seeing how anyone has proved anything against this juice thing. They claim to have a new technology and while I dont see anything proving it's existance yet (becuase i have only been doing research for an hour now at 5am and I am tired) I do not see anything that proves that they dont have it. Am I missing something huge? Maybe becuase I am tired I just cant catch it. But I keep reading the alert and I dont see anything specific as to what or why or how it is what you are all claiming it to be. I do agree that the way some of it is written is a bit stupid. "way past faster than broadband" has to be the best line ever. But still ... please help me out here ...

Yeah, and I bet you were one of those jacknozzles who defended that company that had developed "perfect compression" a few years ago on here..

What was their name? I forget completely, because nothing became of them.

How's this, sporto:

NO technology can stop all spam with e-mail the way it is.

NO technology can make dialup faster than broadband.

NO technology can detect that the person chatting on the other end of the line is really a 47 year old naked guy.

Nevermind for FREE, and they'll PAY YOU IF YOU GET A SPAM/VIRUS.

It's called COMMON SENSE, "antho2000".

Fraggy

@sinectis.com

Broadband on dialup IS possible, it's called ADSL!

Well, I do agree that this looks like a scam, but revolutionary compression techniques would allow for greater bandwidth!

ADSL uses "dial-up" to achieve broadband, remember?

But all the other promises they make are ridiculous...

Re: Broadband on dialup IS possible, it's called ADSL!

Sorry but ADSL doesn't actually use "Dial up" it uses the same wiring, but it operates at a different frequency to the standard phone network, and is a Digital signal as the name implies. A "Dial up" connection uses the standard telephone network sending Analogue signals using a modem (MOdulator DEModulator) to convert the digital data to an analogue signal and convert it back to digital data at the other end. Telephone calls are Analogue signals. This Juice Boost is a total scam, there are no two ways about it.

anon101

@82.151.x.x

Broadband is ADSL. Broadband is the marketing term used because it was realised that most people could not cope with asymmetric digital subscriber line. This scam just proves they were right. As Barnum said "There's one born every minute." I guess he underestimated the numbers.

There are other variations of broadband sdsl, vdsl ad infinitum but they are all variations on the technology.

A thought occurs. If this had been launched to go live on 1st April everyone would have smelled it immediately. Therefore move it 6 months and you have the world's biggest gotcha! Let's hope it is no more malicious than this. However it has still been a very successful human generated virus with all the emails it has created.

What do you need? A PC, webspace and some technical knowhow to create a site which most 10 year olds and up have these days.

Could be the biggest joke yet. At least you now know who your stupidist friends are and who to trust for advice.

le_pie

@com.au

Re: Broadband on dialup IS possible, it's called ADSL!

"Broadband is ADSL. Broadband is the marketing term used because it was realised that most people could not cope with asymmetric digital subscriber line."

um no, Broadband was a term coined to cover protocols and such that could handle and send large amounts of data, Satellite, ISDN and Cable are classed as broadband. So ADSL is broadband, but not the other way around;

@hawk.blu

Re: The site reads

"I am just not seeing how anyone has proved anything against this juice thing."

I think it is the other way around. Where have you seen this mystical piece of software working? Nowhere yet. Never will.

Juice has not proved it can work.

I can claim to be able to make sure you never receive another spam email, that does not make it true that I can in fact do so.

One way of ensuring you never receive SPAM under the SPAM acts, is to sign you up to a service that makes you agree in fine print, to allow all kinds of riff-raff to send you email as a "associate" of the service, and not be able to cry SPAM anymore.

You have been warned by people who are experienced in these matters, take notice of the warnings.

Re: The site reads

Juiceboosted is not using ADSL or Cable - they claim to be able to use dial-up (56K) and super-compression technology (that does NOT exist) to achieve 2mbit speeds.

ADSL requires dedicated hardware at the CO and operates at a different frequency than POTS (dial-up). Cable is not related to dial-up in anyway, so why does the fact that it exists make JB legit?

AnonName

@co.uk
2MB is already possible over ADSL, all sorts of ISP's offer it; all that is needed is that you just have to be within 1mm of your local exchange or some similarly ridiculous distance.

Don't laugh!

Well, I looked at all their patents, did some programming, and applied the same technology to my broadband connection.

I am now averaging 500Mbps and in many cases the web page was already fully loaded while I was still typing the URL.

(Of course compression works best if the transmitted data contains a lot of hot air. Thus the juiceboost site loaded at the speed of light. )

Using my compression scheme

I bet they stole my idea for Q Compression (TM) to achieve those speeds. I came up with a compression algorithm that compresses any file of any size down to the letter Q. It works in constant time and is literrally a 100% compression. I'm still working on the decompression part.

Pyramid scheme

I just love this part (from the scammer's post in the Broadband Tweaks forum):

quote:
Faster than broadband and available worldwide without cost (yes completly FREE). Give it away and get $48 USD every time!
So not only don't I have to pay for it, but I'll get $48 for each friend I scam convince to sign up? Where are they getting the cash to pay me from since I'm guessing my friend's would be getting the service for free as well.

The sad thing is that some people will fall for this and not wonder just why the phone companies aren't providing 2Mbps over a normal phone line. If it was technically possible, you can bet that the phone companies would be raking in the cash from this.

I just sent in an abuse report to EBay (and referred them here for more information). Let's see how long until his auction is taken down.
