Grafton, WV | Great!!! How about extending your infrastructure a little more and get RT's to those of us that are right on the border distance wise.
It is getting VERY old that users who already have DSL are just getting higher speeds and those of us that have nothing still remain with nothing. How about pushing out to some additional users and stop always upgrading current users.

Frisco, TX | Re: Great!!! It's about retention. Once you lose a customer it is REALLY hard to get them back. No one wants to hassle with changing their service and then changing it back. Or at least very few do.
That's why cable companies and RBOCs are fighting to hold on to their existing customers first with speed upgrades. It is cheaper to upgrade an area speedwise than it is to build a new area. And you can be sure of how much of a return on investment you will have by reducing churn in that wire center.
Although, I can attest to the fact that expansions are still being done. Until a few months ago the only broadband option available to me was Comcast. Now that my local telco has seen fit to give my neighbourhood DSL I've jumped off the Comcast service and gone to SBC.

Grafton, WV | I agree, but the issue I am seeing is that they are upgrading all that currently have access and those that are far out and leaving all of us that are border line with no options. I know for a fact that I can get a loop length as low as 15,900 feet is not less. But because they want to play games with everyone they refuse to give me a connection. | |

Grafton, WV | It is to me too. And believe me I have been looking at moving to a new location. But when you are in a situation where you own two homes, in two different states, both need work in order to be able to sell and you have no vacation time to take to fix them up to sell them and only one income, it is kind of hard to just pick up and move.
I am in an area where the only high speed connection for internet is cable. And there are two things with cable that do not work for me. Low upload speeds and not able to run servers. The first I could live with at a 384k speed. The second I cannot. Plus I need the static IP. | |

Yermo, CA | Yeah and Verizon is doing something about It, Cable only has one thing to fear, Ma Bell coming to the Outskirts near You someday, offering DSL. Maybe SBC is taking a hint from Verizon.

I think they should just go and make upload at least half of your download. Then I think most of us would at least be content, if not happy.

| | Amazing There has to be a catch here somewhere. As it is, 1Mbps upload is still not a lot, I'll be impressed once they start offering 1.5-2Mbps and higher for upload, with no data transfer caps or prohibitions on servers. That's the way broadband should be. Even if they do this, however, DSL still suffers from the distance curse, and so the only people who will be able to have that kind of speed are the lucky ones living close to the CO.

Davenport, FL | Obviously, this will take some heavy planning... IF the companies actually want to do this right and not be half-arsed about it.
Obviously the whole infrastructure that is theirs will have to be improved for the obvious need of higher capacity(believe me, any improvement of speed will be used immediately).
Though I can't help but wonder how much longer from when these new changes are implemented to where we have posts about people bitching that only then are they getting the speeds they were promised before, when they're probably living in places with substandard wiring and or building quality.
