Re: Screwy chart!Heh, that was my thought. "Kilofeet". I knew what they meant, but it still doesn't look right. Also, noticed that attainable downstreams 'looked' like they were actually lower after about 9.5 "kilofeet".

Answer to Verizon's FIOS ???If it is -- it's "nice but no cigar". ADSL2+ is what I expected all telcos to do next. Verizon really leap-frogged everybody eh? Still -- kudos to SBC -- keep it coming.

Verizon is working this, along with long reach LT's.

Wont make much difference for the massesThe chart prooved interesting in its comparasion between ADSL and ADSL2. Apparently if your over 7.5k feet from the CO you wont see any difference and you'll only start to notice real jumps in speed if your within 5-6k feet.
I guess many ofthose who have (or should I say can?) get DSL are likely to be eligible for those improved speeds, but I think alot of people will still be left in the dark with cable being our only salvation for higher speeds.

Re: Wont make much difference for the massesLuckily I'm under 6 "kilofeet" from my CO so I'll be ready for it if, and when, it becomes available in my area. I too would like to see what the Upload speed would be.

Can you imagine have a 1mbps upload speed for most games or anything else for that matter. I can't. Would be great tho.

about timeSome Company considered ADSL 2+. The Chart to me seems like even people at 12000 ft would get decent speeds too. I wonder if they would do trials with the bonded pair method that I read about somewhere that it would in effect double the distance.
|
| |
Re: about timePeople around 12K feet won't see any advantage of ADSL2+.

Re: about timeGood thinking -- for those that haven't heard -- ADSL2/ADSL2+ is the 1st consumer level broadband connection (besides T-1) that allows true additive bonding of lines to actually increase speed (and not just capacity ). This feature should help pay for the buildout as more users buy 2 (or more) ADSL2+ lines to get faster speeds -- especially those further from the DSLAM. Maybe we should buy stock in companies that sell bonding routers? (or will that be a feature of the modem?)
|
| | |
| | | |
Re: about timeImpressive...Bet that's going to go for a pretty penny. Bonding of T1's fetches a high dollar and it's much easier to do.

It is only for 1 or 2 CO's from what I have seen, so very few are eligible.

It's Not Just About the SpeedsThere's a lot more to ADSL2+ than speeds. One is the ability to link up much faster than before. It's touted that the modem and dslam will link in about 3 to 5 seconds. 2+ modems have a "sleep" mode they'll go into when there's no packet activity. I've got the boards ordered for trial in my lab, but my vendor can't get the chipsets out quick enough.

step in the right direction...this is good news. let's hope the rest of sbc will see new offerings in a year to a year and a half.

What about RT's?Unless they expand this to include lines on RT's it don't mean squat to me.
|

Re: What about RT's?What do you mean?Would RT's be upgraded at a later time than the CO's? .Say it aint so.

Been around NOT ADSL2+ |
Here is a pic from another thread I posted in reguarding how to give customers more speed, whith existing equipment. As for price this client pays around $120/mo for service (I do believe there is a law enforcement discount fr this subscriber as well).

Upload!!I dont give a crap what the download is, show me the upload... I mean it's getting pretty ridiculous that isp's give such low upstreams, so low in fact that it is so easy for 1 computer to saturate the entire upstream of your network, even if they are not uploading, just in ack packets from downloading.

FinallyFinally a news post about SBC's trials...
SBC needs their own RSS feed.
So far I have heard that the upload speeds will be around 1mb/s, that might be a rumor though.
Pretty soon we will be watching TV through our phone lines :P Cable will finally have land-line competition.

SBC in St. Louis is horrible..This is the worst place to do a test. Then maybe that's the entire point? If one of their worst (at operating) markets can do it, the rest can! If they offered me a free trial of this I might just go back to them. But then again, probably not. They started screwing with my 1.5mbps service 3 years after I had it. Distance wasn't an issue, I can see the CO from my front porch Then again, I should've known better to get DSL from a company who had trouble keeping my POTS going. I know it isn't the lines. I switched POTS carriers and I haven't went down since.
|

when?when will it be widely available to public community? for 24meg speed.... um... it will fill up my harddrive in a month, need a raid 5 then haha.
|
|
We don't need more speed -- we need more distanceOnce again the people 30K feet fromt the CO are just screwed.

My ADSL serviceMy current ADSL service is SLOW. I'm like 14,000ft from the Phone company I guess. I get speeds of around 250 Download and 120 Upload if I'm lucky. Some days, I have NO DSL service at all for hours on end. Lately it's really been bad. This is with Covad. I've been waiting for Cable Internet service for a LONG LONG time, and finally the middle of next month it'll be here. I can't wait to get rid of this slow as hell DSL service I've had for a long time. I miss my SDSL service I used to have from northpoint. It was about twice as fast both ways then what I have now. Hell If I get half the speed comcast advertises, it would still be far faster then what I have now.

WRONG!It's being offered in an area of San Francisco as well...by invitation. Approximately 300 snail-mails/emails went out and there were no takers. Can't say as I blame them either. Really, the offer wasn't "meaty" enough.
Hmmm, we'll give you 6 months free DSL if you let us jack up your current DSL line and invade you life for four months so we can test a new higher speed product. We'll give you new equipment and send a tech out to install it. Yes, you will have to be home and miss work. You will also have to be home when we come back in four months to uninstall it and attempt to restore your previous service.
Seems too much hassle for me with little to no return. Missing a day of work alone is worth more than 2 months of free DSL.
I understand that they are re-doubling their effort to gain a test base of at least 100 current DSL subscribers. Lets hope they put a better offer on the table so we can get some takers.

5,000'Thats the maximum from the CO/RT you can get "double" the speed. 6,000 feet you get 15.5Mbs. 7,000 feet you get 12.5Mbs. 8,000 feet it's a wash. Has anyone noticed that from 9,000 feet on, you get WORSE speeds w/ASDL2+ vs ASDL2?. Of course, it's just a chart...but...
