| Re: *YAWN* They did transfer 10GB/s but the overhead of IP does not allow one to utilized the full 10GB/s for user data. The limitations are the end-machines adapters and not Internet2 backbone.
Next, it does effect you indirectly since the traffic utilitzed by the Internet2 community is not being use on the regular Internet. So all those students and professors on-campus are transferring data without effecting our bandwidth depending on the particular institution's policy for their Internet2 traffic. I see the cable traffic pattern change in my area when the off-campus students arrive for school. | |

likely in the next 18 months you will see speeds
around 9-10 mbps download and 700K-1 mbps upstream.

| Why does the bill have to go up? It makes no sense. The bills have been staying the same or going down while the speeds are going up. That's always been the case with technology. More for less.
Four years ago it cost $75/month for a 1.5Mbps/256K cable connection in my area. Now it's $39/month for 3/256.
DSL used to be $50/month for "best effort" 1.5. Now it's $26/month for the same service with faster services being announced for not that much more. | |

Personally, I'm gaga for gigabits.
I want infinite real-time HDTV selection. Actually, this only needs a high-bandwidth pipe and fast switch, and I can get by with 25 Mbps or so. So, this will be practical next decade.
I want Library of Congress-researched tutorials prepared in real time to explain the answers to my dumbest questions. Well, a really fast database engine at the central server could presumably create the content and forward it as an HDTV stream for the same measly 25 Mbps, but for a large number of users, it's probably necessary to ship the raw data and let the distributed 300 GHz computers do the data crunching about 20 years from now.
And I want enough bandwidth for the virtual reality implants that will be waiting for me in the nursing home.
On second thought with 6 Gbps coming in only 30 years (based on 6 Mbps today), I hope I'm not ready for managed care by then!
Otoh, imagine all the privacy that can be invaded with all the internet cam and RFID traffic that will be available.

i2 will never be open to the general public. It was meant to only hold schools / research labs.
You will not be downloading hl2 patch 1.1 off this system.
Unless you work for a center on this network... you will see none of those speeds.
even if the technology becomes more affordable... where is the incentive for companies to intall to give the general public better connections ?
many are getting 5000 k download speeds.. but uploads are 128-256 ??
Docsys 2 was supposed to allow better speeds with what you have.. but where is the rush to give it to us?
Verizon is really on top of those fiber installs too...

hey.. how about making 'magic' technology that allows the signifigant portion of this coountry to get basic high speed access.
many would kill to get 1500/256 instead of using the sattilite broadband they have. Do you think they care about how fast a large test file was sent between two research institutions they will never hear about otherwise ?

| Re: Intresting!! The people developing the technology have no say in how fast your Cable is. They simply want to develop new and exciting technology. To understand why broadband in our country is so far behind, you have to understand economics, because the technology is very much there. We should not and will not stop development of technology just because it isn't profitable for telecommunications companies to deploy it.
Regulation of the industry, while helpful to some degree, does drive down the price of broadband and makes it difficult for providers to expand. Now, I'm not saying that we need to remove regulation from the industry. I like having broadband and I have a feeling that the market correction would be enormous. Forcing allowance of use of your network to providers and placing a limit on what you can charge them for that access is troublesome at best and devastating at worst for the owner of that network. Until the right regulatory environment can be worked out so that prices don't skyrocket but revenues can increase, you'll just see more and more of the same slow development.

Also, the chances of this data being moved to a physical storage device like a hard drive is slim, I would assume some sort of fast solid state device. On the other hand, who is to say the data was even saved after being transferred? Toss it in memory and delete it immediately... it was transferred!
