Pentagon cuts off some ISPs
overseas voter registration impacted
(old news - 12:57PM Tuesday Sep 21 2004)
tags: security · world
The Pentagon, in a peculiarly passive reaction to the continual background noise of site cracking, has simply blocked a number of big foreign ISPs, including yahoo broadband japan, and Wanadoo in France, from accessing .gov and .mil sites. This might not be news except that it includes www.fvap.gov, a site crucial to overseas voters who do not have easy access to a US embassy. What kind of internet evil doer is tied down to their home IP, thus stymied by such a simple defense? more from AP.

Zombies?

Couldn't a halfway clever hacker use one of his many, many zombies in the US as a proxy to get to the government sites? This sounds like something that's nothing more than a minor annoyance even to your run-of-the-mill script kiddie.

All things equal

(Which they never are) I think this will hurt Bush more than Kerry. But consider, the amount of attacks on our Government facilities appear to be from certain IP address blocks (called ISPs or countries by the media for those who do not know otherwise). While it has been a year or two since I looked at an attack log here, I am told that most of the attacks are from certain areas.

So on the surface it makes sense just to ban the whole block and maybe the service will try to clean up their act. On the second look, all those people will do is shift to another area and continue whatever they are doing. So I get a few days of faster service until they move to another set zombies.

Should not effect the troops.

The troops overseas all have access to government IT systems, and can still access the sight.--

Re: Should not effect the troops.

Sure, the troops have access, but what about US citizens that are employed overseas? Most, if not all of them, don't have access to government IT systems.

If you can't spell it, you don't need to access it.

The beat goes on....

I wonder if this means that the GOV does not trust their counter-cracking methods being able to stop the bad guys from doing damage -- ie: they can't tell the good stuff from the bad stuff.

I guess that means now I'll have to cancel my trip to France in November if I want to exercise my right to vote, lol.

The hits just keep on coming

Pfffft.

Like it matters. It does not matter who votes, or if they vote for Bush or Kerry. Theyre the same big business party and things are not going to be much different with either or at the helm. So I am not too worried about overseas voters. Were damned if we do and damned if we dont.

What I am worried about is the continued ignorance of our government that punishes the many innocent for the actions of the few. To make it worse, these "preventative measures" dont even affect most of the naer do wells. They affect law abiding citizens. Its like gun control. You make it difficult for John Q. Public to own a firearm, and such laws barely make a dent in the criminal arsenal. This is yet another great example of the governments paranoia and stupidity.

Wanadoo France

The ISP Wanadoo is well known for being a source of open proxy's to facilitate the spread of junk email. I wouldn't trust them either and think ISP's in the United States should blacklist their net blocks.

Re: Wanadoo France

And half of American ISPs are no better.
The cable ISPs are filled with zombie machines that fling out spam and viruses like crazy.
Or did you miss the study that showed that some absurd percentage of spam originates from American netblocks?

Funny.....

Most ex-patriates outside of the USA are liberals. Who is in office right now? George Bush, a conservative. Could it be possible he wants to stop the "liberal ex-patriates" from voting for Kerry? The reason I say ex-patriates are liberal is because most liberals like to think of all countries as equal. Conservatives never leave the USA, just because America is #1 and everyone else sucks. Of course this doesn't hold true for everyone, but I think it's fair.

This Should Help Bush

This should help Bush, since Americans overseas are more likely to vote Democrat these days.

So shutting out Americans overseas will work to Bush's advantage.

That said, I see shutting out foreign IPs from some .gov sites as perfectly legitimate.

Re: This Should Help Bush

This is going to Hurt Kerry more than bush however there is a proxy site »register.verifiedvoting.org/ that will let users bypass this problem.
