That's already available and used, by some big corporations, some offices will have ceiling cams in them, but they are noticeable, so the employee knows they have the ability to be watched.

| When the 'company' handed out cell phones to all the techs, I was the known techie in the office that my co-workers tapped to make sure we were not being tracked. The company got the cheapest model and it didn't have gps. Some of the folks handed them back to the company anyway and said just use my voice mail that out-pages to my pager anyway.

Productivity should be the measure of how much work an employee does, not whether he is at his desk every second of his work day.

After you've clocked out... Honestly, what I do on my own time after I've clocked out is never the business of my workplace... By monitoring the cell phone (depending on if you carry a corporate phone 24/7 like I've had to do in the past), your workplace has the potential to be a bit too nosey.

I used to do that at one of my previous jobs... They didn't understand the concept of the lunch hour and were always calling me just as I was getting food... Interestingly enough, I ate at the same time every day, so they should have known better...
But yeah, turning off the phone (and removing the battery in some phones) will do the trick...

| This opens a whole new can of worms You really need GPS to know if an employee is doing there job or not? If a an employee is suppose to get a certain job done and it's not, can't the employer put 2 and 2 together? An employer knows whether your doing your job or not without GPS.
This opens a whole new can of worms. We have companies using GPS phones. We have companies using key loggers on the computers. We have a car rental company install GPS trackers in there cars to keep track of customers. We have Progressive Insurance telling you if you install a little box to keep track of your driving, you get your insurance lowered. We have the city of Chicago installing camera's all over the city. We had the problem with Wal Mart using RFID's, keeping track of what you buy. This doesn't include spyware and adware on your computer.
What's the next big thing going to be? | |

| Nextel offers it I know Nextel offers a service. We use them for our maintenance people that are always in the field. You can bring up a webpage and it gives you there locations on a map. Works great for being able to dispatch people closest to the site with the problem. FYI the GPS phones are big ugly and yellow

While an employee is ON the clock, sure...but while they're OFF the clock, no, you absolutely do NOT.
I personally have no problems with GPS tracking while employees are on the clock, if their position is one where such tracking would be beneficial to the business (delivery drivers, for instance, where GPS tracking of vehicles is already commonplace), but when it covers "employees in general" and any off-the-clock time, it's gone too far.
As for which phones/networks can do the tracking: it's pretty much possible to locate phones on GSM, CDMA, and iDEN because of the E911 rules (AMPS and IS-136 TDMA are basically dead), but GSM doesn't use GPS at all (it uses triangulation of signals from cell sites) and CDMA normally requires "assistance" from cell sites to do the tracking; only iDEN phones can act as standalone GPS receivers, which is why nearly all tracking apps so far have been for Nextel, who uses iDEN.

Who says you have every right to? Just because someone works for you does not mean you own them. If you feel they are not doing what you paid them for, fire them. And if you are that neurotic that you have to monitor your employees whereabouts, then you have some serious trust or control issues.
I think the most offensive thing about this entire thread is how many people accept this. Somewhere along the road, society's view of employment has been completely warped. Employment is a barter of sorts. Person provides services for Employer. Employer compensates person. Person does not provide services, Employer does not provide compensation. It's a simple equation really. I don't understand why people are so nonchalante about this.. "Oh.. well, I'll just find a way to get around it! That'll show 'em!" Employers have no right to do this at all in my opinion (and i'm sure it's illegal too).
I can't even fathom what would make anyone think this kind of thing is acceptable. | |

They don't have to listen in to conversations. They pay the bill. No need to wiretap. Also if your dumb enough to commit a crime with a GPS enabled phone, than you deserve what you get. All the company has to do is hand over the records. | |

The day my boss hands me a GPS celly I'm going to shuve it up his arse.
I drive 400+ miles a day on a sales route and it gets old but it sure beats the hell out of being at the office all day with your boss.I like my freedom being on the road at work.
