Firefox RC1
Mozilla releases release candidate

Users in our Security forum announce that Mozilla has officially released Firefox RC1 on their FTP server. Straight from the horse's mouth: "If you've already downloaded 1.0 PR (the "feature complete" preview) and you're not really interested in testing and bug reporting, then you should probably stick with 1.0 PR for a couple more weeks and upgrade when we release the official Firefox 1.0."

So far so good

All the extensions work too, just modify the Extensions.rdf file and change the versions #s to maxVersion 1.0.

All mine worked! Woo!

I did that last night This morning I modified the GreyModern 0.6.1 theme so it also now works with 1.0RC1 (use the same trick as for extensions and make a Theme Installer HTML file).

BTW RC1 appears to be slightly faster than 1.0PR. Others are reporting the same in the support forum.

Ohh, forgot to say that I've found one obvious bug. File->Exit doesn't work File->Close does so no biggie.

Alright...

While Firefox is a great GREAT browser...Mozilla and opern source are a wonderful thing....this 24 hour Firefox news coverage is getting a little obnoxious. What's next, a TV channel dedicated to Firefox?

It's only a god forsaken web browser.

Try closing Firefox...hell shut down the entire computer I say and go outside your house every once in a while!...you might find other things you like. For example, girls!!! (or boys, depending on your style)

Re: Alright...

You forgot FireGate....how the mozilla community bugged the IE group's cubicles in Redmond and stole the code for what was to be the next version of IE.

Right idea, but wrong victim. Most of Firefox's features were "stolen" (read, "inspired") by Opera. But is that really such a bad thing?

(And after FF got done doing that, MS decided to "steal" Mozilla's 'XUL' design to implement XAML in Longhorn for UIs.)

I'm pro-Firefox and everything too. However I believe he's right. This up-to-the-minute news about Firefox is getting obnoxious.

This response was posted from a wireless blackberry unit by the pool while the user is having intimate relations with his significant other.

I will trade you my firefox for your intimate relations. I'll even throw in some extensions!

Whither Mozilla Suite?

So what happens to the (better IMO) Mozilla suite now?

Weren't Fireweasel and its brethren supposed to fully supplant the Mozilla suite upon release of 1.0?

The Mozilla FAQ is old (version 1.5 information) and I don't know what to make of the "roadmap" at »www.mozilla.org/roadmap.html , which is as inscrutable (and useless) as ever.

Anybody who's in the know care to summarize? Please?

Re: Whither Mozilla Suite?

All Mozilla products will continue to benefit from Gecko development, but I gather the time between releases of Seamonkey (gotta love Mozilla's codename ) will be longer.

What I find ironic is that the reasons the foundation gives for concentrating on Fireweasel are mostly the same reasons I prefer Mozilla! Crowded gui, pfft, I call it complete!

Re: Whither Mozilla Suite?

The ONLY Mozilla bloat, for me, was the developer-centric debugging tools, which they seem to have moved to a submenu when I wasn't paying attention, and the nearly useless Composer and Chat client.

Throw in Mozilla Calendar (still pitifully underdeveloped) and a couple of extensions and you've got everything you (okay, "I") need.

So Mozilla 1.x will struggle along? I kinda expected them to simply roll up Fireweasel and Thunderbird and call it the new suite, or something. You can tell I REALLY don't read that roadmap.

Thanks for the reply.

Firefox (or Phoenix or Firebird) was originally started as a lightweight web browser [slashdot.org], presumably in response to concerns about what I'll call proper Mozilla (i.e. the suite) bloat.

It now seems to implement everything that the Mozilla Browser does, and I don't really find it any faster than the Mozilla Suite, and I like the integrated mail client (which has great search, spam filtering and other facilities).

Some people object to using the suite if they don't use the mail client, but really, come on, it's taking up only a few MB on your hard disk. Get over it!

If you do use the associated Thunderbird [mozilla.org] mail client then you're actually using more memory as the GRE (Gecko Runtime Environment) is not yet sharable between different processes.

Plans like putting a full page ad in the New York Times [spreadfirefox.com] for FireFox seem a bit crazy to me. What about the mail client, IRC client and forthcoming calendar? Advertise once there's a whole suite, and even then not in newspapers!

Just keeps getting better and better....

Users who are excited over Firefox, are so for a reason I would guess. Alot of people have been using this browser since inception, and it has come a helluva long way. And now its ready for primetime(has been imo). Internet Explorer is old tech and its a safety hazard to Windows. I dont use it and I havent in ages. For some thats hard to fathom but I assure you, there is life-and internet-outside of ie...:D

Firefox is like a bad dream

My eyes glaze over with all the constant attention at this site to Firefox. I dont read any post in the forums about it, dont post in them, and dont help anyone who uses it.

This one post is my exception for this month. The only good thing I see is that now the FF fanbois quit posting in the IE threads to ditch IE and get FF.

How about ..
