Verizon Confirms 3Mbps Expansion
16 additional states finally get higher speed
Confirming something we first reported last week, Verizon has issued a press release stating they've expanded their 3Mbps DSL service into several new regions. 16 additional states (California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin) can now see the higher speeds - pending your distance to the central office of course. Still no word on the promise for "naked" or unbundled DSL made earlier this year.

Not here either

Still hassling away with Verizon, they still say I qualify for 3.0 but are dumbstruck as to why the order does not take.

So how does that help??

Those that are out of reach of DSL completely?? Why not start doing something that will give you a bigger customer base instead of just raising speeds for everyone else.

Gets kind of hold hearing everyone else getting this crap!!

Re: So how does that help??

Sorry you are out of reach of DSL. Raising speeds does increase customer base. AT&T/Comcast cable was my only choice for broadband for apox the last 4-5 years. It is way over priced but the only game in town other then dialup for me. DSL shows up but is way slow and nearly the same price as Cable which is like 3 times plus faster. There are now 3 companies offering DSL at equal or faster then cable speeds.
I am now an Earthlink/Covad DSL customer. Same speed as Cable and I'm saving $200.00 the first year! I would never have consider DSL without the speed boost.
In time and in your case not nearly fast enough most everyone should have some sort of broadband available. Wifi and Broadband over power line should be able to take care of those DSL and cable can't reach.

Re: So how does that help??

But the point is, it is a VERY LIMITED customer base. Even if they were to provide this every where they can, they would quickly run out of customers.

They need to expand to get to new customers.

Edit: I do have some form of broadband available to me. I have Comcast and DSL through a CLEC that I can get a measley 460/385 out of. While better than nothing it is seriously slow. I have comcast at the moment but with their outrageous pricing for the speeds I am being forced to cancel it. If they brought their pricing down to meet that of DSL I would stay on it quickly. But they refuse and continue to rape their customers.

It is crap because they refuse to deply it in a consistent manner. They will put it in affluent areas and screw everyone else. So basically until we can get it, it is crap because it does us no good.

I've read this a few times, and I'm not sure I follow you.

Why? Regardless of what you might think, profit margins are tight in the Telco Business. Don't get me wrong, I still don't like them as a company, but I deal with them a lot more than the average Joe. Even taking into fact that they are a phone company, go they have a ways to go.

Verizon's internal ISP (VOL) has been losing money since the very beginning (and they keep lowering their rate so they can lose money even faster). Expanding at the wrong time, adding a bunch of tight fisted consumers who may never become profitable might capsize the whole ship. The telco business is also wary of investment do to the fact that the Feds might come in and add additional regulations that make solid profit even more far fetched.

I have 128kbps ISDN. Between the lines and the ISP it costs $130.00 a month. 384kpbs upload would be dreamy.

Have you run an ISP, or any business for that matter? With so many people buying how could you possibly come to the conclusion that they are over priced? When you are a setting a price for your product the marked determines price, not some vengeful CO with an evil laugh. Price is set to maximize profit (much like you would do when you get two or more potential employers to bid for your services).

Let's say I am selling widgets and I am trying to decide between $10.00, $100.00 and $1000.00. At $1000.00, I am able to sell 15 units and generate revenue of $15,000.00. If I price the unit at $100.00 maybe I can sell 180 units and generate revenue of $18,000.00. Let say if I set the price if $10.00 and sell 2000 units. Now I can generate $20,000 in revenue. However, the cost of producing the extra 1820 units might exceed the additional $2000.00 generated by lowering the price to $10.00. In that case it would make more sense to bill at $100.00 (or even $1000.00 if the math works out). Even if the total cost is the same whether I build 15 units or 2000 units, I still might choose to charge $1000.00, have $5000.00 LESS revenue and deliver top notch quality service. It's all in what business you want to be in.

Comcast is a bottom feeder and a price leader (in most cases). I hardly think their prices are outrageous.

quote:
But they refuse and continue to rape their customers.

What color where the shirts on the armed storm troopers that showed up at your door to take your hard earned cash? If they had windbreakers that said BATF, that was the government, and they are not Comcast storm troopers...... Yet.

quote:
It is crap because they refuse to deply it in a consistent manner. They will put it in affluent areas and screw everyone else. So basically until we can get it, it is crap because it does us no good.

Uhhh.....folks in affluent tend to spend more? The chances of higher market penetration are much higher in affluent areas so it tends to be a good place to invest your dollar. It's the same reason that builders tend to build higher end homes in affluent areas and you don't here anybody complaining about that.

You'll also find that Old English, Bud, and Schlitz sell better in less affluent areas, whereas premium wines sell better in affluent areas. Funny huh?

Do I qualify

How can I tell if I qualify for the new higher speeds. I am not sure if I am close enough to the central office.

Try

11,000 feet. Call billing and place an order. If it's declined for distance they'll tell you.

verizon promise=jumbo shrimp

or miltary intelligence...you get the drift of it im sure...the people of the commonwealth of pennsylvania know all about vz and empty promises. ivan just wants another ivory backscratcher. this tech (me) thinks they should give an across the board upgrade in speed. that way, people who can take advantage of the higher speeds will, and those that cant get diddly due to a distance issue might at least get something. but i find the powers that be never listen to the techs in the field, we only get told what to do, and how "they" want it done...usually at the expense of good customer service. i live one block from the RT and the dumbass vz engineers only provisioned the SAC box that serves the other side of the street for DSL. hey people...roll the dice and take your chances. me, i have no other broadband alternative but comsuck cable. and i use it. i think it is ludicrous that bell of whatever used to be equated with good customer service, now all we do is piss people off. verizons fulfilled promises are directly proportional to the amount of favorable (de)regulation they encounter. we the people have seen it time and time again.

heres my latest speed test
»/speed ··· 00055614

since vz has proven they are good at screwing the people, they can blow me.

Confirmed in Wilmington, DE

My zip code is 19802 in the city of Wilmington, and just chatted with an online verizon rep and they said I am "pre-qualified". In other words, I can order it.

I have comcast at 3m/256k right now, I am going to cancel it and order the verizon dsl at 3m/768k at 39.95. The DSL is cheaper anyway and the upload is sick for broadband of this tier, so a win win for me. Upload is very important with how I use the internet so this verizon deal is perfect.

Still nothing in Lancaster, PA

Well after reading this I called in to Verizon about updating. We sure enough I got the same answer as a month ago.

"Sorry sir, but at this time the higher speeds are not available in your area. 1.5/384 is the highest at this time".

I am so furious about this whole situation. How can verizon have the cahunas to make an anouncement like that when is it so BS.

I left Comcast cause I was paying like $62 a month for a cable modem, plus the thing slowed down after the kids got out of school in around 3 or 4ish.

The CO is right around the corner, so I know it isn't a distance issue. I gather they just haven't got around to updating it yet.

Speeds are good and all....

For those people who can get them that is. I live in an area where the best dsl I could get from Verizon is the 768/128 package. I completely understand how competitive they want to be and how they want to offer the best speeds that they can... But they need to realize that there are places out there that are in serious need of line updates. Maybe now that they can offer these speeds they will go back and fix their lines for those of us who either can't even get dsl or can only get such slow speeds that it's not worth it, but probably not (it's been like this for years in my area). They just need to get their priorities straight.

Re: Verizon Usenet access

Yes they do, and the retention is pretty damn good. The binary newsgroups are held for at least a week (much better then Time Warner, RCN).
