As the commercial plays out, the father is systematically belittled and marginalized by the two daughters and left out to dry, and swing in the wind by the wife. There are too many successful comedies where the husband is a dolt - Home Improvement, Everybody Loves Raymond, Yes Dear, The King of Queens to name a few - so why should commercials be any different? On the one hand I might agree with you - it seems everyone is a bit too sensitive these days. On the other hand, it seems that some advertisers have decided that white adult males are the only "safe" targets and thus we have seen an endless progression of ads portraying men as creatures with half a brain that is only used sometimes. My feeling is, if (as an advertiser) you wouldn't feel safe putting a female, or a black or hispanic or asian male (or any other minority) in that role, then you ought not to be putting a white male there either.
Besides all that, it seems incredibly stupid for an advertiser to in effect insult any particular class of customers. In many homes it's going to be the dad that makes the decision whether to go with DSL or cable modem service, and while I can't speak for anyone else, an ad that has insulted my intelligence would almost certainly be in the back of my mind as I made a purchasing decision (I know there have been times where I have avoided certain products or services because I detested their advertising, though I could not name any particular one offhand).
But then, in my case it wouldn't take much to convince me to avoid a traditional phone company, after all the years they've ripped us off with high rates and outrageous charges for add-on services (such as Caller ID) that cost them nothing to provide. This just gives me another reason to be happy with cable modem service!

Re: sweet zombie jesusThere are a lot of really stupid and mean ads out there. I can understand how clients approve them after seeing them. One that sticks out in my mind was a TV commercial that was running a few years ago (can't remember the product, so you know it wasn't very effective) where the "joke" was that a guy drops something down the garbage disposal and sticks his hand in to fish it out. While he has his hand in there, his wife comes along and goes to flip the switch, so you're thinking the guy's hand is going to get chopped up. But, luckily it was just the light switch. Ha ha. Nothing like putting your audience in pain to make them want to buy your product.
There's also those gross Florida orange juice commercials where they grind up fish in a blender. Nothing makes me enjoy my orange juice more than having it remind me of drinking a ground up fish milkshake. Dumb. Just dumb.

Re: sweet zombie jesusBill Cosby just complained about this. Kids should not be encouraged or told to think they are smarter than parents. Only an extremely tiny percentage of kids actually are; the rest are just wise asses lacking in any life experience.
TV programming should not perpetuate this type of behavior among children. It's actually a key part of Communist playbooks.
As well, the targeting of white males in TV and especially ads is also a subtle brainwashing. The stupidest persons in the U.S. are black males. If they don't feel safe running an ad that shows that, then perhaps advertisers should stick to ads that don't insult the intelligence of the characters.

Personally, being secure in my manhood and knowing I have the final say in the important things at my house, I couldn't care less about how the "W.A.S.P." is portrayed. I laugh at most of the ads out there. Others I just shake my head at.
I do wish they would throw in an occasional "stupid woman" ad, God knows there are enough of them out there. I find it ironic and somewhat disturbing however that if you were to run an ad that referenced Niggers, or Chinks, or Dykes, or Fags,... you get my point, the collective world as we know it would be in an uproar.
It is my humble opinion that since the rest of the world knows we are at the top of the food chain they figure we can take the ribbing.

something new to learn....there isn't a lot of awareness out there of a new form of discrimination against fathers. This thread indicates the widespread and unawareness and indifference. It's become epidemic with hundreds of thousands fathers estranged primarily through divorce; 55% of Americans are divorced. So, hey, future dads, half of you on this site will be wanting to know more about how your civil rights are evaporating in a few years, when you become divorced and find your first amendment rights are a myth. Men are no longer legal 'equals' to women in a court of law. What appears to you foolish should prompt you to do a bit of research on the subject.

Re: what a hoot!Maybe you should spend some time learning about that organization before you make such off-the-cuff comments. I'm sure that some people were similarly dismissive of civil rights organizations back in the early part of the 20th century. There is a very real issue that men are often discriminated against by the courts, both on custody issues and in the divorce process itself. Women often deliberately provoke a divorce knowing that they will come out ahead. Just as an illustration of how bad it can get, there was a case a few years back where a twelve years old boy was sexually molested, repeatedly, over a period of several months, by his babysitter. The babysitter got pregnant. Guess who was ordered by the courts to pay child support? In some of the comments here I see the same mentality that some people had back in the 50's and 60's ("blacks aren't really discriminated against, they just want everything handed to them on a silver platter.") Well, nowadays, there really is discrimination against men of all races in the courts, particularly with regard to "family issues", but I guess some people would rather make boorish comments that make any attempt to understand the problem.

Re: what a hoot! You think that the civil rights movement for Blacks and this discrimination against men are different things?
They are the same. The civil rights movement is a disaster, and now that the Communists have achieved their goal there, they are moving on to destroying the role of men in society and marriage in general.
If you don't like what is happening to men, you need to rethink your support for the civil rights movement in the 1960s as well.

As a father.....As a father who saw his three kids used as pawns in a divorce, who was denied seeing or contacting them for a year, AND who has only seen them for a total of FOUR HOURS in the past 5 years "just because" their mother doesn't want me to, I take offense at ANYTHING that promotes the stereotype that mothers are the: 'automatic natural caregivers' of children.
Maybe the if the male executives at Verizon that approved this ad campaign were forced to live the HELL the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court put ME through, they might be a bit more - how should I put this - empathic?
Now you know why I'm living in California.

Verizon sucksActually the Verizon Ads also make me crazy. I too am bombarded with Verizon DSL Ads that make me feel like an idiot for not having DSL. Yet when I call up Verizon (local number or 1-800-PICK-DSL) I dont qualify for DSL. Also, my Verizon phone bill is chocked full of DSL ads as well. I've contacted Verizon about 90 days ago, and I got on their 'SEND ME NO ADS' list (They say it takes 30 days to take affect). Yet I still get the ads inside my phone bill. Now they stamp outside the phone bill "Get High Speed Internet...". I've called them 50 times to get DSL. They have no plan to upgrade the service in my area for DSL (which Verizon wont actually admit). I've called Verizon now specifically about these Ads, inside my phone bill and outside stamps on my phone bill. I've told them I will be deducting a $4.95 Fraud-Ad charge each month. They told me I will be in collections soon. They gave me the number of their legal dept to discuss further. I also cant get cable. Time Warner wants to charge me more than anybody else in the country, $26,500. I've posted over and over on this, such as: » [TWC] [TWC] wants wants to charge me $25,000 for RRI also have a 'Time Warner Cable Sucks' sign outside my house. I'm thinking of adding a 'Verizon Sucks' sign as well. Please visit my page: » [TWC] [TWC] wants wants to charge me $25,000 for RRand post some words of encouragement or constructive suggestions to get me broadband. News flash!!Since it obviously doesn't seem to be common knowledge. Most of what you see on TV is fake, as in not real! That applies to both TV shows, as well as commercials. It's not meant to depict anything, other than a scenario to get a point across, whether that be humor, drama or that someone wants you to purchase a certain product. Anyone who can get bent out of shape because of a commercial really needs to evaluate themselves. I think we'll have to start putting disclaimers on commercials like we see on movies: "...any similarities to persons alive or dead is coincidental." Maybe then people will not actually think the commercials are talking about them. -- ¡¡Viva la cerveza!!

Re: News flash!!maybe you've failed to realize that TV is the greatest brainwashing device ever created. The news, sitcoms, and advertisements are all feeding you subtle cues as to what is accepted, and what is not.

straight economicsIt's straight economics... more women watch tv than men. Therefore advertisers cater to women... how? By portraying men as helpless and stuipd. It's nothing new. Really...think about it when you're watching t.v. some time. Almost all commercials have men as the stuipd ones.
In the case of this ad what will it do? Make (some) women who watch it think they are smarter techwise than their husbands and want to buy verizon dsl to prove it.

Re: straight economicsDo you have a link to back that up?
I watch more TV than my wife, a lot more. Do more women order DSL than men? I do not really think so. Do more women pay bills than men? Do women cook more than men?
I do not think it is economics, I think others in the thread are correct. White men are the only safe targets when it comes to labeling them in some way. Be it stupid, poor, dirty, horny, or whatever.
You cannot in any way indicate (safely) that a short black woman is stupid.

Get over itThese people have got to be kidding.
"Wahhh... I'm offended - they're protraying me as an idiot".
Poor, poor you.
Guys, if the size of your manhood is so small and insignificant that you're offended by a little TV ad, then you really need to go back to nursing from your mommy, because you're not a real man yet.
Let me guess, when you drop your shorts in front of the Mrs., she smiles and says, "Awww.. how cute.. "
And whining that "women would get offended if it was them too!", doesn't even get you out of diapers.
Grow the hell up and get over it, or go back to your "bah-bah".

Re: Get over itIt's a commercial... If you think it's funny laugh, if not, don't. Anyway, it's just a commercial...who cares! -- "No one can be told what the Internet is...You must experience it for yourself."

What you fail to understand is that it's not the commercial that offends directly. It's just a culmination of society and the media's tendency to portray men as little more than a mindless, human ATM.

yawnHow about you boycott by not watching TV. Go outside and exercise instead of flipping between your tv and PC.
