Bluetooth Fends Off UWB
Offers three year roadmap to triple speed
(old news - 10:54AM Saturday Nov 13 2004)
tags: wireless · bandwidth
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group this past week released a three year blueprint for the short range wireless technology, during which time they expect to triple Bluetooth's effective bandwidth. The move is an effort to fend off the advance of Ultra-Wideband, a radio modulation technique that could create products with short range rates of 1Gbit/sec (to start), about 100 times the current bandwidth of Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is doomed

Wait, wait, so 1 Mbps will become 3 Mbps. How does this compare to 1 Gbps? How about the cost of new hardware to support the speed increase?

The problem with Bluetooth is not bandwidth, it is implementation. After so many years in development it's still quirky, hard to use, incompatible, unreliable, filled with security issues, and frankly completely overshadowed by 802.11.

If UWB is to become something, lessons should be learned from the problems Bluetooth has had.

Re: Bluetooth is doomed

As a devote Mac user I have no problem with Bluetooth or and connections with. SE T610, into 12 PB, and I can surf the net, get into my car and the headset connects, get home and my phone syncs with my iMac.

Saying this, I did attempt to connect a extra Bluetooth dongle that I had to Windows XP and it was a nightmare. drivers, updates, patches, partial working software.

But as you said, it looks as though Microsoft went the way of 802.11 instead and isn't aggressively supporting BT like Apple is.

I don't see a single legitimate use for bluetooth.

Re: Bluetooth is doomed

Well, I have a Bluetooth SonyEricsson T637 phone, a Bluetooth iPaq 2215 PocketPC and a Bluetooth USB dongle on my WinXP desktop. I was hoping that I can sync my calendar and contacts among the three seemlessly without plugging them in just by having them in range. Well, I don't have Bluetooth running on all the time on the phone and the PDA to save on battery life and for security, so manual intervention is required to sync them. Moreover I still have to plug those devices to charge them, so there goes the need for wireless synchronization. Finally, synchonization with the cell phone (XTND Connect) always duplicates my appointments and contacts, removes the voice-dial and removes other contact info except phone numbers and email addresses on the duplicate records on the PC and PDA.

Then every time I want to exchange contact info, I use the infrared port on the PDA and the cell phone. Most people's devices don't even have Bluetooth or don't know how to use it.

On the positive side I found this Winamp Plug-in »www.brics.dk/~barnie/wabtrc/ that works with WinampTV plug-in »www.brics.dk/~barnie/WinampTV/.

Amazingly it worked from the first try and worked pretty well.

There are not allot of uses for BT, but there is a use I found if your the type of person that hates wires.
I originally got my T610 with BT and decided to get the headset for it. It was so easy I wanted to cry. Then when I got my Mac and Apple corrected all the little BT issues that they had it was like a dream.

Basically if wires in your car annoy you then a BT headset is the way to go.

And also I believe the consumer market is starting to see advantages of BT. Jenson has a rear set of speakers for your home theater that work off BT.

Ericsson dropping Bluetooth development?

I vaguely remember reading about this. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

If true this is pretty indicative of the state Bluetooth is in. One of the pioneers of the technology pulling out is never a good sign.
