USA Today left six un-patched and un-firewalled computers connected to the internet and rather obviously discovered they were quickly infected and used for all manner of internet scumbaggery. The study observed 341 attacks per hour against a Windows XP machine, 339 per hour against a Mac and 61 per hour against the Windows Small Business Server. The article notes that an estimated 67% of consumers do not use a firewall, according to the National Cyber Security Alliance (many of whose members sell firewalls, it should be noted).
