Munis must receive Verizon permission
(old news - 09:58AM Wednesday Dec 01 2004)
tags: legal
Despite efforts from several groups to get Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. to veto the effort, Rendell signed the controversial HB30 into law last night. While Verizon struck a deal with Philly to allow its Wi-Fi plan to go forward, the law mandates that PA communities - even those under-served by the telco - must now get approval from Verizon before deploying their own broadband.

you got that right brother- i just dropped verizon, since i can now get landline service from my cable co. hopefully, this type of competition will force them to provide better service-the govenor's selling out certainly doesnt help matters, though-what do you expect from a guy who resisted counting absentee ballots, most of which come from the military overseas?

With a statement like that in the old Soviet Union, China or Cuba, you would never be heard from again.

China buys from us as we buy from them. Welcome to the global economy.

Actually, China and a dozen other countries lend you the money and then you buy from China.

That's because you a 3 trillion dollars in debt. Without the lenders you wouldn't be buying from anyone at this point.

I would like to point-out to all those that seem to take great pleasure in bashing Bush as well as Republicans in general, that this Governor is a Democrat. By granting Verizon monopoly control in this matter proves that Democrats are just as bad as Republicans when it comes to big business.

Re: and verizon...

The constitution entitles me to say what ever I like!

My ILEC is Verizon so we have the same enemy (corrupted government officials, corrupted legislators & Verizon.) Verizon bought the Florida PUC and Florida Legislature. They pushed through a law that allows them to significantly raise rates ostensibly to spur competition. The law required the PUC to hold hearings and make the appropriate decision. They held 4 or 5 hearings in different cities and the response was overwhelmingly against the rate increases. The corrupt PUC approved it anyway and the State Attorney General took the matter to court so now there is an injunction stopping it.

Rendell is a lame duck Governor, and I believe he will most definitely lose the next election.

However, it was the Republicans (Which I am as well) who control the state representation and they approved this piece of sh!t legislation as Verizon once again gets to bend PA taxpayers over a barrel. It doesn't matter which party you belong to, when crap legislation gets passed - everyone loses.

UPDATE: I just read the whole legislation and there are some positive cahnges in it as well. Here is the part regarding community Wi-Fi efforts, which basically says the Telco either has to provide the service, or the community can proceed with their project:

quote:
The final version of the bill allows existing municipal
systems to continue to operate and provides local governments and authorities
a one-year window to develop these networks. Municipalities that are
providing telecommunications service through a municipally owned or created
network as of January 1, 2006 can continue to offer and provide the services
"to the extent and scope" that these services were provided before that date.
After that window closes, municipalities must offer the incumbent telephone
company the right of first refusal to provide the proposed service. Then, the
municipality can proceed with its proposed network only if the ILEC waives
it's right of first refusal under this act.
Verizon has already agreed to waive its right of first refusal in regard
to Philadelphia's proposed municipal Wi-Fi network guaranteeing that that
particular project can proceed. They have done so in a signed agreement with
the City. We will work with other municipalities on projects that they have
established or propose to establish in order to ensure that, to the extent
that they are now viable, they will also have the opportunity to succeed.

Thanks Fast Eddie!

Ok, so signing this bill to prevent the city from wasting more money on something it does not need starts to make up for the whole get-out-the-felon vote drive

Maybe now the city can stop pussy-footing around its real problems and get down to the business of fixing them.

Same old BS as their E911 fees that went right into the executives pockets instead of what it was meant for...like saving kids drowning in boats. Or was it a different 'charge'?

I blame the people of PA, for not speaking up or not caring.
Just like you, I expect my elected officials to work in good faith for our collective best interest.

What do you do when your government fails to do that?

Feel free to come out here and fight the machine anytime.

We spoke up. We care. Our representatives have not done their jobs. We have jobs that we go to every day, to support those representatives whose job it is to work for our best interest. The mechanism which exists to resolve disputes when our representatives are not performing properly is prohibitively expensive, time consuming, and isn't at all well suited to resolving those issues. I don't have the cash to hire lawyers or a team of lobbyists to protect me from my own government.

I need to state some of my opinions regarding government and politics.

Government, first and foremost, should represent and serve it's constituents. The power of one vote should equal that of another. One person should have one votepower, no more, no less. One votepower can only be realized by an actual person.

We should create the job description of our employees, our government. There are functions that the government should be involved in, and there are areas where the government doesn't belong. We need to clearly define these boundaries. Should the state repair the roads? Should the state refuse marriage benefits to gay people? What social issues should they be involved in? Should you be able to get a flu shot in a public facility, or should there be no such option?

What do you think about these things, and why?

Zero government involvement = no speed limit, no taxes, no borders, no roads, no legal system, no schools, no money, no capitalism, no socialism. No framework for our basic needs. Autonomy isn't as efficient. We wouldn't live as well as we do. The idea of government came about from a desire to improve life on the whole.

There is no simple answer. Don't use labels. Many ideologies have failed before us, and our present government combines parts of them all. We pay taxes, we have publicly funded programs, we have private businesses and organizations. Broad based labels aren't accurate and are bred from, and amplify fear and misinformation. I am not a "liberal", I'm not a "conservative".

Do you trust your government?

Completely?

Of course not.

Then, there's room for improvement.

Know your enemy.

*****************************************

If anyone has noticed, in my post, I was careful to not point a finger at anyone. If anyone takes offense to my post, it won't be because I intended to offend them. If someone is offended, that would demonstrate very clearly the harm in broad based labeling.

In my life, I have people that I look up to. Some of these people have lived a lot longer than me, and profess knowledge and authority. I expect that those people will say things that I don't agree with. Because they have lived longer than I have, or had different experiences than I have doesn't make them any more correct about anything. Perhaps they haven't educated themselves about that thing, or perhaps they believe that the end justifies the means. Regardless, the point is the same: keep an open mind.

I personally believe that the means is often more important than the end. If you do the right things for the right reasons, you will most often be satisfied with the results, even if they aren't always to your benefit. I'm not always going to win. You won't need to be continually questioning your motivation, and the checks and balances you have used will make it far more difficult for a subversive element to manipulate you.

Request for comment, as long as you don't throw political labels around. Get back to real discussion.

Re: Oh the Joy of corporate lawmaking...

Wyoming has a long and difficult history with Bell Telephone, then US West, then Qwest. If a city wanted to
do a Muni they would do it. Most of our communities are so small a wireless system would work very well. The Above is La Grange, Wyoming as you can see it would very cheap to put in such a system.

I should mention the Farmers in this area grow some of the finest russet potato's in the world. A shamless local plug, this is true.
