Spam site redirects requests back to source
(old news - 12:55PM Saturday Dec 04 2004)
tags: spam · software
Lycos Europe seems to have shot itself in the foot with the release of a free screen-saver that uses computer down time to turn the tables on web sites associated with spam campaigns. The Web page offering the "Make Love Not Spam" screensaver has been replaced with a placeholder graphic that simply says, "stay tuned." At least one site targeted by Lycos's screen saver has changed its web page so that it automatically forwards requests it receives back to the domain that distributes the screen saver, according to F-Secure. The program promises to - spam the spammer - by sending a steady stream of requests to a list of websites that have been used in spam campaigns, slowing or even disabling those sites.

Yea moron. That's really funny. Hack MS (or another company's website) so that no one can update their systems or access important things like support.

Just arrest these @#&$%s@!

Can't we just arrest these bastards that own said domain and force a shutdown of their systems? It can't be that hard, can it?

Re: Just arrest these @#&$%s@!

If the domain owners are in China and Russia (which most spam domains are these days), yep it would be that hard to arrest them.

Re: Just arrest these @#&$%s@!

Although the Web sites may be hosted in places like China and Russia, the spammers are mostly right here in the USA. So yeah, I'd love to see someone go slap the cuffs on Alan Ralsky and his slimy brethren.

3rd time?

Isn't this the third time we saw this here on BBR? Let it dye already.

But it was a neat concept. PERHAPS SOMEONE SHOULD RELEASE WHAT DOMAINS ARE SENDING OUT SPAM (hint, hint)

Re: 3rd time?

It did not spam the spammers themselves. It spammed the sites that the spammers sell their goods from.

If you want that info it's real easy, just open up your spam and look for the link.

Re: unibomber where r u?

Every single one of your posts that I have seen is about bombing someone, or starting a revolution against some company or another that involves violence or something crazy. Quite frankly, it's kind of immature (and annoying).

See venezuela, ukraine, etc. if you want change you must actually do something.

"People must see clearly the futility of maintaining the fight for social goals within the framework of civil debate. When the forces of oppression come to maintain themselves in power against established law, peace is considered already broken." CHE GUEVARA- Essentials of Guerilla Warfare

I will continue my post, not necessarily with violence but with definite subversion of the corp structure being my final goal. CHANGE will come regardless of how scared you and those like you may be. This country belongs to the people not some "board of directors".

Re: unibomber where r u?

Sure, do something. Go ahead. But stop talking about using guerrilla warfare on spammers. Even if that's not what you meant, it's still crazy to quote something like that in this situation.

Backbones blocking the site?

Here's a story about Backbone providers blocking the Lycos site:
Some major internet backbones are preventing access to the new Lycos "anti-spam" screensaver web site at www.MakeLoveNotSpam.com. This controversial site provides Internet users with the ability to participate in distributed attacks against web sites used by spammers, leaving the spammers with slow connections and high bandwidth costs.

Lycos dumb as a stump

1. You KNEW that there were going to be redirects.
2. Spamming is also about bandwidth (in reality that's what ISP's care about) so anything that uses bandwidth like that is going to be a problem for ISP and backbone "owners".
3. By "spamming the spammer" you are still eating up bandwidth...no help to those that need to use your bandwidth.
Example: a bunch of people on the same node by us did this, brought half our towns cable modem system to a slow crawl. Yes lets everyone use the maximum amount of bandwidth at the same time...in an e-mail sent out they our ISP, Road Runner, said that utilization went from an average of 11% to 93% in about a week...said anyone downloading or attaching to the site would be cut off for violation of TOS.
4. Spamming a spammer is not an affirmative defense against prosecution.

Right Idea though

I liked the idea of the Screensaver. What I liked about it especially that it cannot be considered a DDOS. I just love it when lawyers find a loophole in the way things work. Besides. I think the Idea will give way to new decentralized screen savers that work just the same. Though makelovenotspam may be dead, the idea will live on in the hearts of many, and soon it's children will emerge.
