Are they kidding???

49 marks (21.2196 USD) for 250 megabytes per month? I would love to know what their d/l limitation is for ADSL there, price difference in USD is about $8.20!

Re: Are they kidding???

Well, if it really does provide a download speed of "2 million bytes per second", then you can blow through your entry-level monthly quota in a matter of two minutes.

But if the unlimited-use price is about $100 a month, that'd be a fine price for a 16-megabit connection.

And you thought everything was more expensive in Europe...

Could it have been that they underpriced the bandwidth that people were using?

The price structure is based on the bandwidth you want. 49.00 DM is the entry level service. Right now you can choose up to 2 Mbps, for more Deutsche Marks of course, and by the end of this year you will have the option of 10 Mbps service. I understand the service is symmetrical.

Sounds like pricing is based off of data downloaded, not throughput.

Ouch !!!

You are right. I went to the Homepage »www.rwe-powerline.de (it's not available in english for the time being) and from what I could read the actual throughput of the service is 2 Mbps ,but your price is determined by the actual data transfer. If you have the 250MB plan, each additional MB of data would cost you the equivalent of 6 cents US. if you have the 10,000 MB plan (about US $100.00) each additional MB of data is about 1 cent US. If you are downloading music and pictures like a bandit it could get expensive.

Re: Ouch !!!

Keep in mind this is THEIR business plan. If in the future years this rolls out to the states it will more likely be sold on a bandwidth basis as this is something we are used to. Lets see how this technology actually flies first.

2MegaBytes per SECOND?!!

WOW,
Check what the author wrote:
"He said RWE PowerNet was launched on Sunday in Muehlheim and in RWE's home town of Essen, in Germany's industrial heartland, or Ruhr region. It would be offered in more Ruhr cities in the region in the second half of this year and in the Bonn area. Besides using existing electric plug sockets, powerline promises speeds of up to two million bytes per second, or more than three times the speed of latest phone connections promoted by Deutsche Telekom. "

Two million bytes per second?
Wow, I can't help but say WOW again. My goodness, even a T1 can't reach that. That speed is half the speed of a T3(45megabits per second or about 5.6MB/S).
Somebody called the company and ask if that is true if it is man, bring the speed demon to the USA espescialy here in San Jose, CA.

WOW

tick tick . . .

At 2 megabytes/s the meter is running after 2 minutes of downloading. Thanks but no thanks unless it becomes cheaper and unmetered within reason (10 gb up/down/mo)

gotta realize something though

These companies do not take into consideration people who use their lines for very long times and dl a lot of stuff. Most people out in cyberspace still only use the net for casual browsing, chat, and other non-bandwidth hogging activities. Thus they would rather pay less for their GSP and get more from the common consumer.
