Mozilla/Firefox devs hired by search giant
(old news - 01:54PM Wednesday Jan 26 2005)

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Google would be developing a Mozilla based browser (and potentially even an IM application) that would easily integrate with the company's GMAIL service. Tacked on to a slew of other moves, the hiring of two Mozilla/Firefox developers this week only fuels speculation that there's a Mozilla based "GBrowser" on the horizon.

On Monday, Ben Goodger, lead Firefox engineer announced via his blog he was hired by Google back on January 10, with the official title of software engineer. He was however very tight lipped about what projects Google will have him working on.

In the entry he noted that his role with Firefox and the Mozilla project would remain largely unchanged. "I remain devoted full-time to the advancement of Firefox, the Mozilla platform and web browsing in general," he promises.

Yesterday found another significant Mozilla developer, Darin Fisher, also announcing rather succinctly via his blog he'd been hired by the search giant. Fisher is the "owner" of the Mozilla NSPR (Netscape Portable Runtime), Cookie/Permissions, and NetLib (The Mozilla Networking Library) modules.

"Like Ben, I will still be very much involved with the Mozilla project and community," he promises.

The company registered the Web address "gbrowser.com" on April 26 of last year, and has been continually hiring browser and javascript experts (including IE co-developer and ex Microsoft employee Adam Bosworth).

Google has repeatedly stated they are not building a browser, but are interested in "improving the browsing experience". As such, it's very likely they may simply be developing applications that more smoothly integrate into existing browsers - Mozilla particularly.

Googlefox

There had better be a VERY compelling reason to use a Google browser instead of Firefox.

Re: Googlefox

What do you mean "instead of" It seems as though Google's browser would most likely be Firefox + some extra Google-oriented features like GMAIL. Might as well start calling this project "Goo-Fox"

Re: Googlefox

Honestly, I think Firefox is already a Google product. The default home page, the gmail and gmail composer extentions, the search box (that does offer other options but really)

FO-GOOGLE!
I see them intergrating so much to the browser that the new browser will end up hogging memory PC. As it is, Firefox uses more resources that IE.

But then again, who knows. Standing by.....

Nice to see I'm not the only one who sees this, Doc.

At the very least, google is raising the bar for competitors like increasing webmail storage.

I wouldn't be surprised if cerulean studios (trillian) is in their targetting scope for an IM client.

All i can say is that if google codes an OS (Goo-gOS anyone?) I'll be running for the hills because a war will be brewing.

Re: OmniGoogle -- GoogleWorld

G-Linux anyone (Ginux)? GIM (G-IM)? Gindows? GOS (G/OS or to borrow from OS/2 how about OS/G)?

It's a scary thought like "1984" was when I first read it in the late 70's.

Could be a FireFox/Google XUL application

Google might simply see FireFox as an up-and-coming browser and want to get their foot in the door developing applications to take advantage of it. For example, you can code XUL applications that FireFox can run. These don't look like traditional webpages and can have additional features that would be hard to match in a normal website. Google might be interested in exploring these options for the future. I really doubt that Google will come out with their own browser.

I'm bookmarking this one... the same thing was said about Google launching an email service (and a terabyte gigabyte of storage at that!) and did you see their video search service yet? »video.google.com

We are witnessing web-history unfold as Google positions itself to be an indispensible part of the internet as we know it. A browser for Google? I think that's almost too easy... that's like Mercedes saying they're going to start making mudflaps. As with Mercedes, Google's all about the engine... a gbrowser would only serve as an accessory.

Good catch! Minor memory lapse from the status message at the bottom of my gmail screen..... 1000MB does not a terabyte make... my bad.

I've seen their video search service. That and their e-mail service fit in perfectly with their specialty: Searching through information. Building a browser doesn't fit with that at all.

With Google taking over the world where will that leave Uncle Bill G.?

I foresee a future where forums are filled with Anti-Google propaganda about how bad they screw things up and MS is just a footnote on the blueprint of time.

"Ben Goodger said in a note on his Web site -- »:/weblogs.mozillazine.org/ben/ -- that he would continue to work on Firefox, a free browser that has gained a popular following due to additional features and fewer attacks from malicious hackers than Internet Explorer.

Internet cognoscenti have speculated about a Google browser since the company registered the Gbrowser.com domain and hired several Internet Explorer engineers last year."

Uh, IE *AND* FF engineers, working on a browser together?
From either side, this does NOT look like a good idea!

Is BBR a "menopausal, chicks-only" forum? I swear you guys will whine, piss, and moan over anything you can find. Just mentioning MS or IE gets you ladies and fanboys worked into a fit. IE is a wonderful browser, despite being insecure and embedded in the OS way too much. IE will
I think with Google's resources a "Gbrowser" would be a hit, I'd try it...so would you. Look how moist people got over GMail. Much of it was the 1GB of space, so what will be the hook for Gbrowser?

How many years before its competitors litigate over Google's dominance? Seems to be the trend....if you can't beat 'em - sue 'em!

You leave Jack Burton alone!

Google is slowly becoming Jack Burton... "You leave Jack Burton alone!" (Big Trouble in Little China)

Come on, media folk. Leave Google alone already, good lord. Scanning Monster and Dice for job openings at the company just to make media noise is pretty limp-in-the-pants, you know?

Besides, the last time this happened, I ended up debunking the speculation.

Despite my dislike for Google as a company (particularly their hiring criteria, and their hiring practises), nothing irritates me more than general media absurdity. It wouldn't surprise me if Google ends up posting a humourous job opening somewhere, asking for professional pigeon handlers. The company *does* have a good sense of humour, you know...

IE Engineers also??

I haven't read the article yet, but it seems to me that they hired some ex-IE people last year... no? If nothing else, Google is open-minded... Or did they just confirm that Firefox was the best way to go... or... hmmm..
