600 XOHM Base Stations Ready To Roll In Chicago
While more reviews emerge and Sprint addresses throttling...
Some 600 Motorola WiMax base stations are ready for operation in Chicago, the next market set to launch after Sprint introduced the service in Baltimore on Monday. Additional reviews are coming out that seem pleased with network performance, but unsurprisingly gripe about network coverage. Meanwhile, in response to consumer advocate complaints that XOHM's AUP gives Sprint the right to throttle P2P, Sprint says "We are not targeting specific applications or services." Like most ISPs, Sprint isn't being any more specific on how exactly they'll tackle network congestion, but gives themselves ample leeway in their AUP's fine print.

No 5GB cap!

Xohm will closely follow the terms of the cable/dsl providers, not the 3G carriers.

Xeno, through Xohm, can your system accept incoming connections, such as incoming VNC, SSH, or Remote Desktop connections?

There are no ports closed on Xohm that I'm aware of. These work with Sprint EVDO so should with Xohm as well.

You realize that cable/dsl companies are instituting caps.

Please post a link that says there is a gap? If we want to play the "assumption" game, LTE will never be here and when it does show up, it will be outdated and have a cap too. SO, caps are here to stay so it seems..

WiMAX already available in Chicago

You can already use WiMAX in Chicago. It's just not 'officially' released yet. Just buy a device and register it in Baltimore then switch the billing address. Don't expect any customer support though.

See www.4ginfo.com as they already did it.

Re: WiMAX already available in Chicago

I read last night that Baltimore uses Samsung APs, while Chicago is using Motorola wimax APs.
Sounds to me like it's still a big beta since they don't seem to have chosen any one hardware for roll out.

Re: WiMAX already available in Chicago

Chicago is actually up and running and anyone could use it today if they register the device with a Baltimore address. The people at 4ginfo.com proved it in Chicago.

What Sprint is testing is the customer support and provisioning process. They are doing it with the smallest market first to get the kinks worked out before officially releasing in larger markets.

The Xohm group is almost completely separate from Sprint. Separate billing, separate customer support, almost like a new company.

There is a contract in place with I think Samsung to rollot NYC, so maybe sometime next year.

Most will want to wait for EVDO/WiMAX combo cards anyway, which are expected to come by the end of the year.

XOHM for mobile devices, i.e. iPod Touch?

You think there might be a device made specifically for bringing it too devices that otherwise would not be capable of getting this service?

Re: XOHM for mobile devices, i.e. iPod Touch?

WiMAX is an IEEE spec like WiFi. Any consumer electronics maker can drop in a WiMAX chip just as with WiFi today. They don't have to deal with any carriers to do it. I imagine we'll start seeing a wide range of devices once combo WiFi/WiMAX chipsets are dirt cheap and when coverage is greater globally. For the next year though, it will probably mostly be laptop cards, modems and some cellphones.

So technically... someone could deploy WiMAX on the 2.4GHz spectrum that WiFi uses today similar to WiFi (but using the same power contstraints given for 2.4GHz unlicensed spectrum)

That wasn't where I was going, but yeah, WiMAX is eventually planned for unlicensed spectrum too.

Unlicensed Wimax products are actually already on the market, and have been for some time. You can buy many Wimax devices now that operate in unlicensed bands. Checkout the link below for a few of them.

Its already available. The Nokia N810 was one of the test items being used down in Baltimore.

XOHM's average latency, at 133ms, was much lower than that of cellular networks, which usually average around 200-ms to -250ms. I got figures as low as 71ms on one test.
Here's proof that the these people don't really know what they're talkinga bout Plenty of people, including myself, can average 133 ms or less on EVDO.

I can sometimes get 90ms on EVDO, but not much lower than that.

Regarding coverage

Is it possible to get WiMax in Gary Indiana, 40 miles from downtown Chicago at the present time using the method of sticking an appropriate card in your computer, registering in Baltimore, and then changing address to Gary?

I suppose I'm asking... when Xohm comes to Chicago will the coverage extend to Gary, Indiana.

Availability

I purchased the Zytel Modem online from Xohm.

I live in Merrillville, Indiana (46410) and my store is in Highland, Indiana (46322).

Are either of these 2 locations in range at the present time and/or will they be in the near future? Thanks! John Monteen Millennium Technologies

PS How do you become a dealer? I am in a high-traffic location inside of a Meijer store (40,000) people per week.

what would happen to sprint if 300 people got brain tumors..

My feeling about all this, seems no one cares (with what I read as wifi on steroids) what this stuff can do to our brains. We are always put on the defensive to where unless we prove Wimax causes this, its ok to build it anyway. When our country builds a nuke, they don't drop it with no concern as to what the fallout will be for decades to come because they dont really know what the devistation will be till they use it anyway. These companies should be halted and this stuff should be in the labs scrutinized to see what it does and to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it does not cause issues before allowing it.

Ok cellphones are out there and under scrutany too but I am hearing that Wimax is twice the transmission power of wifi. If someone watches a movie streaming off the net, that is their head right near the computer for 2 hours of continuous exposure where, on the other hand, people typically talk on the phone for only a period of minutes.

Another thing, how close will the antennas that transmit this stuff be; its not fair to people who don't want to use this to have to be exposed to its potential effects.

People should have a say and this should be voiced, yet I hardly see or read anything about it and its very discouraging and frustrating. What I would like to know as well is, suppose 300 people got a tumor and all of them were heavy users of Wimax, could a judge force Sprint to shut down their entire Wimax network. I mean, look what happened to the tobacco industry when it was clearly proven that smoking caused lung cancer. My understanding, the governments justifacation for taking action was that if it had to, directly or indirectly, absorb the medical fallout costs from conditions caused by tobacco companies encouraging smoking (for example, through ads), then it had a right to add taxes to discourage purchasing cigs. Well, i would like to know if the government can do the same to Wimax if these issues are found.

I don't want to use this, to me, what it can possibly do is not worth it. If I don't want it, I shouldn't have to function in a world where I could possibly end up with this. I would like to mention that using many of these things (cellphones, wifi) does give me headaches at times and when I am not around them, I am not bothered at all; I wouldn't say that was nothing.

Survival of the fittest doesn't stop where radio waves start. If your lineage is too weak for WiMax, so be it.

oolisfast,
Please do some research before pontificating about the dangers of RF radiation to ones' brain.
You should be worried about your eyes, kidneys and reproductive organs well before your brain.

Also take a look at exposure rates for RF compared to the radiation from the sun absorbed by a person walking down the street on a summer's day; I think you would be so alarmed by the comparison; you'd never go outside again.
Can it be dangerous to stand directly next to or in front of a working antenna, absolutely, but since the power of the transmitter gets exponentially less as you move away from the source, it quickly becomes 'safe'.

Some AM radio stations have 1,000K Watts of power coming out of them (mostly in Europe)…. Frequencies vastly different, but the power is orders of magnitude different too!
