EBay DSL Collector's Item
For those who really miss DirecTV DSL...
by Karl Bode Friday 11-Feb-2005 tags: dsl · hardware · Oddities
One user e-mails us a link to a classic "Telecom Collector's Item" on eBay: a DirecTV DSL gateway for the rock-bottom starting bid of $1,500,000. Of course the modem is absolutely useless since the company's DSL division was closed back in 2003, but if you've got a million to spare and DirecTV DSL service holds an abnormally large place in your heart, hey....

I don't know, but if I didn't return mine, I'd have been out $400. Think they'll send it back to me?

Better yet: a peice of hardware nobody can use AND one that is only 2 years out of service and therefore isn't rare at all.

The US Government will. They are in the business of buying expensive things that no one can use.

must

This must be a joke. It's hard to tell, I mean there may be a shmuck out there that thinks these things are valuable... No one would pay that much for a 2 year old piece of hardware that won't even work.

It may be a "collectors item" but this is tearing the ass out of it.

Actually, it was a $499 piece of proprietary hardware. At least thats what it cost if you canceled your service and didn't sent the unit back.

That was prior to the end though. At the end I dont think they wanted the units back.

Hell, I've got a complete set..

Yup,

I've got all three versions of Telocity/DirecTV dsl modems! The X1, X2 (it floats), and the linux based X3.

Unfortunately, I don't have any of the source code, otherwise I would be using the X3 for my current DSL connection.

Had to send mine back, or they threatened to charge me around $500 for it . Odd thing was, they said I should keep the gigantic power supply (cheaper for them to replace than ship, I guess...).

So, if anyone needs a power supply for one of these devices, my price will be a mere fraction of that $1.5 Mil auction .

It's just stupid

They know they won't sell it for anything, let along a million.

He's probably just trying to make a point that his DirectTV DSL service closed down, and is pissed (can I say that word), and is trying to make DirectTV look bad or whatever.

The joke on him

The Joke is on Him. Has he though how much he would pay in Ebay insertion fees? For those who do not know, the fee is charge when one lists an item on Ebay regardless if it sells or not.

He will pay 4.80 on insertion fees. No more

Is there any use for these things?

I remember that, after DTV DSL went down, some people were trying to hack these things so they could serve other purposes, such as a DNS server, time server, toaster, nuclear detonator, etc. Did anyone ever figure out how to make them perform any useful function at all?

I think the reasoning was that these gateways came with a fair amount of computing power: a 50 MHz PowerPC processor. OK, a fair amount of power for a DSL modem.

In fact, I was thinking about this the other day, since I have one on the top shelf of my closet.

its a joke

this seller has a 0 feedback score, sells nothing else and expects 1.5mil for a useless modem. he's joking and spent the startup and listing fee on ebay to do it too. he probably wonders why he's getting so much exposure but it's just BBR.

Old hardware

Anyone want an SMC Barricade 7004BR (not in working condition?) Yours for the low price of $15,000

Also a nice Copper Mountain SDSL modem. Working when it was connected last, when Northpoint bit the dust. A steal at $500,000 (DSLAM not included, but I'll throw in a PowerMac 8500 if you want).

For the real treat, an actual working DSL JACK (basically a phone jack with shorting bar) with the Northpoint logo on it. Along with a bit of drywall. A cool $1,000,000.

Re: Old hardware

Hey, I have a Copper Mountain SDSL modem as well...let's do a 2 for 1 deal!!! Ah, i miss Northpoint. They hooked me up with DSL when SBC wouldnt extend to my house...shi* it was still SBCs copper and Northpoint used the line and hooked me up with 208/208 back in 2000. speeds are nothing like today, but when you have SDSL it rocks for gaming...wOOt!!!
