Odd thing was, they said I should keep the gigantic power supply (cheaper for them to replace than ship, I guess...).

I think the reasoning was that these gateways came with a fair amount of computing power: a 50 MHz PowerPC processor. OK, a fair amount of power for a DSL modem.
