Broadband Reports Firefox Extension
Keep tabs on your topics and new IM's!
by Karl Bode 10:20AM Thursday Mar 03 2005
Though please note this is BETA and therefore currently only for the truly addicted and brave, our users are aiding in the tuning of a Broadband Reports Firefox "extension", which will alert you to new instant messages and updated forum topics. To install it, download it here, then unzip the file and drag the .xpi file into an open Firefox window. Discussion of/help with the extension can be found via this thread in our Mozilla forum. (Yes, it works with both the DSLreports.com and BroadbandReports.com domains)

Yes, IE supports extensions.

Re: Cool!!

Yes, but IE's Com Extension Architecture is a mess and hard to deal with. Would easily take them 3 times longer to make this extension for IE.

That is completely subjective and not even close to the point.

The point is, "It can be done in IE too".

Yep, this is awesome. Having the Firefox plugin on sites like DSLReports makes it that much easier to find out the latest in community happenings.

Thanks DSLR

Yeah, I corrected what I said. I just woke up after having to get up for an 8am class so bear with me.

Thanks for pointing that out though.

Giving it a try

Lets see what this thing has got!

I love Firefox, but I wish that it had the across the board compatibility of IE when it came to viewing websites. Some sites just don't like Firefox. That is just a minor annoyance, and the reason why I like the "View in IE" plugin.

In reality though, many websites that don't work with Firefox aren't Firefox's fault. The page likely has either propritary features or much more likely, poorly coded. Firefox is picky when it comes to errors in the HTML. Validated HTML shouldn't give Firefox a problem.

Doesn't work for me

That extension doesn't work for me or others. Obviously still needs some work.

Not too shabby an idea, but...

Maybe a port to Mozilla needs to be made?

Re: Not too shabby an idea, but...

Well, it works for me but doesn't clear once I view my updated topics. It still says 4 Updated Topics 2 hours later and several reboots. Good idea but needs more work.

God I hate zips

Why not just release the .xpi without the zip?

Re: God I hate zips

Especially since an .xpi IS a .zip.

I'm guessing they didn't want to bother setting up the right MIME type for .xpi on their web server.

Re: ........and why is this front page news?

Because it is specifically for this site and some users might enjoy using it?
Why wouldn't one post site specific news and/or info on the site's homepage?

Too bad its not an IE extension. Then the majority could use it.
