Louisiana Fiber and 'Economic Blackmail'
Independent digs into recent Louisiana spat
(old news - 03:01PM Wednesday Mar 09 2005)
tags: legal · Fiber
BellSouth Louisiana president Bill Oliver, recently speaking to the Baton Rouge Advocate, hinted BellSouth might consider pulling a 1,300 employee wireless call center from the region if locals moved forward with a plan for residential fiber. Facing outraged locals, BellSouth quickly went into damage control mode and got the paper to run a correction; but the Independent notes the writer sticks by his story.

Bell South lawyers got The Advocate to blink

The Advocate didn't have the guts to stand up to Bell South lawyers. 1st Amendment rights mean nothing when the newspaper's publisher didn't have the stomach for a legal battle.

Don't fool yourself....

sooner or later these jobs are going to go overseas whether or not the city puts in fiber or not.

I'm a little ignorant on this aspect of the cellular industry. I know its common for credit card companies and broadband companies to out-source and even send overseas their customer support but is this also common in the cellular industry as well?

Linda Lightfoot Should Be Ashamed

She sold her own reporter out. What a poor excuse for a journalist. Well she has to look at herself in the mirror every day...nobody else does

She'd need a conscience for that. Something tells me she doesn't have much of one.

Re: Linda Lightfoot Should Be Ashamed

Ashamed indeed. What kind of reporter covers a meeting without even taking notes?
said by the linked article from BBR's news topic:
Carl Redman, the Advocate’s managing editor, also attended the editorial board meeting with Oliver and another BellSouth official. Redman told The Independent Weekly he doesn’t recall the reference to Timbuktu, and Lightfoot says she can’t remember the context. “I do not remember because I did not take notes,” she says. Lightfoot maintains that in a subsequent conversation she had with Redman, he did recall hearing Oliver say “Timbuktu” but not the context in which it was used.

Doesn't this...

Doesn't this break some kind of law? Bellsouth pulling a call center because louisiana decides to go fibre?

Re: Doesn't this...

Normally, I'd say no. But if you read the article linked to in this BBR news topic, and the previous BBR news topic on the issue:
»www2.broadbandreports.com/shownews/60837

you'll see that BellSouth was paid $18,000,000.00 (in cash, land, and a building) to locate the call center in Lafayette until 2011.

So in this case, if BellSouth pulls the jobs out before then, they'll be breaching that contract.

Our Elected government controled by a corporation.

This is fast becoming our form of rule in this country. Our elected government is being directed by a higher power - the corporation. Those we elect have totally forgotten they were elected by the people. They are doing everything big business is wanting with no regard for the effect the decisions are having on the people.

If you don't think this country is being ran by a small number of huge corporations, this is proof positive.
