Just when you thought they might be dying...

Just as everyone had begun writing Tivo's eulogy, the company announces they've signed a deal to bring Tivo software to Comcast subscriber DVR's (Associated Press). Comcast expects to begin marketing the devices (Tivo will handle the software side only) by mid-to-late 2006. Despite plenty of death predictions, Tivo still controlled a third of the DVR market in 2004.

That way, when you get caught watching TV that is less than "presentable", you can blame the TiVoPOShuffle.

All I've seen is rumours which you can take with a pinch of salt.
More likely now Comc(rap)ast will take over TIVO if anything were to happen but it won't

Which is why Tivo entered a non-exclusive agreement as per the article.
On the *satellite* side exclusive agreements make sense, but on the *cable* side they make no sense at all given that no single MSO covers the entire US. Why the heck would Comcast lock away technology from companies that don't and never will compete with them like Time Warner?

The problem with these Tivo type services is the ripoff monthly or lifetime payment. Stupid! Like trying sell VCRs a decade or two ago and charge a monthly charge, VCRs would have had the same low sales.
If Comcast does it right and it's a minimal charge, like $5, I might for the first time consider one for the wife.

Comcast isn't going to redefine TiVo simply because DirecTV also offers TiVo.

And the nice thing about TiVo with DirecTV is that it's only $5 a month extra.

I just got it today and it's burning a hole in my seat to get home and play with it.

Not for long. Tivo and DirecTVs contract expires at the end of 2006 and DirecTV already has their own DVR lined up. You will more than likely see that DirecTV will not extend the contract with Tivo because their system probably costs them less. This contract is one of the saving graces for Tivo, without it they are toast, and their sales show it. They have just reached 3 million customers this year, and it has only taken them 8 years to do so. DVRs from Motorola and Scientific Atlanta surpassed that number last year.

Comcast supplies all new customers with the DVR box from Motorola that have digital cable even if they don’t subscribe to the DVR service.

No they don't. Regular digital customers get either the DCT-2000, DCT-1700, or the DCT-2500 for Motorola systems. Only people who get the DVR service get the DVR box.

Yes they do. My brother just subscribed to Comcast and he got the new box all he has to do is call and they will turn on the DVR service. I think they do this BC of the video on demand service that any of there digital customers can use.

No, they wouldn't do it because of VOD, any digital box can use VOD. If your brother got a DVR, which is highly unlikely unless his local office ran out of the 6 other kind of boxes they have, then he lucked out. That is not normal policy. What is the model of the box he received. He probably got the DVT-6200, if anything.

It's any wonder why they'll work with Tivo now.

Not to mention the Triple Play threats from Fiber Rollouts.

You are correct. Here is a link to the news release in the comcast forum here at BBR: »Comcast makes deal with Tivo?
Under the terms of the agreement, Comcast and TiVo will work together to develop a version of the TiVo service that will be made available on Comcast's current primary DVR platform. New software will be developed by TiVo and will be incorporated into Comcast's existing network platforms. The new service will be marketed with the TiVo brand, and is expected to be available on Comcast's DVR products in a majority of Comcast markets in mid-to-late 2006.

Probably just the 6412. Comcast is phasing the 6208 out pretty quickly and is making the 6412 their std DVR box.

Exactly, that has been the biggest problem with the Comcast DVRs. I have one and due to software issues service has been a bit off sometimes.

integration ?

Tivo and all companies selling DVRs need catch up with digital and cablecard. The faster this happens the more successful they will be. Tivo made a nice deal. Hopefully replaytv will start making deals as well.

Same here. The DISH Player-DVR 921 went from $1000 down to $550 in 3 months. I don't know how much longer I could wait.

Directv is making their own brand of DVR. Now, I don't know what to expect, but if the Directv DVR is horrible, I will be tempted to move back to Comcast sometime late this year. Lets wait and see what Directv comes out with. You have to think they are probably going to do something that is going to beat the pants of the current Tivo DVR they have.

I am going to wait and see what happens.

 If TiVo has any sense, they'll continue with their CableCARD TiVo. Again, Comcast has deals with Microsoft, Moxi, TVGuide (iGuide), and now Tivo. Comcast has already established a history of announcing deals with DVR providers, but not necessarily following through with them full force. It's like they're covering all their bases.

In fact, this might just be a deal to resell or rent the CableCARD TiVo alongside their less expensive offerings.

I just hope this doesn't take some of the thunder away from perfecting the iGuide system. I like iGuide, it needs another few revisions worth of work to make it golden.

You never know -- TiVo did have that deal with one of Comcast's predecessors (AT&T Broadband) to sell a branded box a few years ago.

No thanks...

I just bailed TiVo and was a bit disappointed in the new DVR's software...however after receiving an upgrade and using it, it works just as well or better than my old TiVo without all the stupid TiVo ads.

Tivo finally woke up and smelled the Coffee.

Them handling the software side of things is the only thing that makes sense. Now they need to do more deals to secure their market position.

The advertisements are getting a little annoying to say the least. Especially the new ones where I'm watching something on live tv and a Commercial comes on and suddenly theirs a thumbs up icon saying press for more info. UGH!

Here's a news flash TVIO, Commercial advertiser and TV executives that crap makes me turn to a different channel. And a lot of times I don't turn back to finish watching whatever it was that I was watching.

Im glad that they are exentually dumping their current
DVR OS. Comming from a Dish Network PVR, its very bad.

The UI is bad, its slow, I have audio syncing problems,
etc.

Too late for them, Im buying my own DVR.

No thanks to TiVo or any subscription based DVR services.. I'll just buy (or make) a standalone, network enabled DVR myself, thank you very much.

P.S. It's $10.00 /mo for the DVR and some, as yet undetermined fee, for the TiVo service.
