GMail Available to Unwashed Masses
Google widens beta further still...
While it's still officially in beta, Google has cast a wider net for users interested in trying out the service who haven't yet. Up until now, accounts were via invite only; the company yesterday began offering one in twenty site visitors accounts; today it seems the link shows up every visit.

Why?

I don't see what this is for. Just about anybody interested in a gmail account already has one via invite and those who don't have one yet probably don't care.

The few, the proud...

Gee, I kind of liked being in with the select few.. now everyone can get one?

I've already ditched my hotmail and yahoo account, Gmail all the way baby! I still have 40 some invites left I think. Guess they'll be useless now?

I can't believe people still don't know about the gmail invite spooler. They've got more half a million donated invites now (and yes it's legit).

Link doesn't work

The link you posted in the article doesn't work anymore. Edit: The link that was originally in the news story here isn't there anymore, so this post is fairly redundant now

Apparently the links are like the invite codes, they only work once. So if you don't already have a link/invite code, either wait till Google randomly gives you one, or just ask someone who already has an account (I think I have like 50 invites left).

They are located on the left side as soon as you sign in under the Inbox/Sent/Contacts area. It is titled "Invite a friend"

Invites are generated randomly, not every account gets them. I didnt have any when I got my account.

After you log in, look in the left corner, below the folder list. There should be a box that says 'Invite a friend'. Put in their e-mail address there.

"they say about one in twenty"

I tried it and first try I got the offer. I now have a gmail account so seems like I should have had to try several times if it was one in twenty.

It took me three attempts to get one. Tried twice with Firefox (don't know if that has anything to do with it), then opened IE and got a link asking me to join on the first try. It also gave me 50 invites...

Is Gmail secure now?

Not sure if "secure" is the correct word, but I remember hearing about how Google would scan your email and give you advertisments based on the content of you email.

Are they still doing this, or is this not a concern to anyone. Or are there other concerns?

I personally *don't care* because I use email from my several domains I have, and use Yahoo for the occasional email I don't want to get spammed as much, but I've had several friends ask me about Gmail, and I'm not sure what advice to give.

Re: Is Gmail secure now?

GMail does provide ads, but then again, they have to make money somewhere. Even the other freebies tend to add something (like those wonderful yahoo ads at the bottom of some emails)

It has a cool interface although having folders would be nice, not just the labels.

Bottom line is, since it's free, tell your friends to get an account and make their own decision. I personally like it, but others don't. As for security, it's a free service. I wouldn't start sending credit card bills or bank statements via google or any other free account. For that matter, I don't send those via a paid account either.

Re: Is Gmail secure now?

Yeah, I don't use Yahoo for anything I *really* care about, and no, I would never type my credit card number in one of my domain email accounts either.

For now, I'll stick with Yahoo for free email accounts, they may not be perfect but they've been doing email for almost 10 years now, which is a lifetime in the tech world.

I won't say I'll *never* get a Gmail account, I actually like Google a lot and I'm sure they'll come out on top eventually.

Gmail and spam?

I never use my gmail account and I've never even given out my gmail address, yet whenever I go back there the account is filled with spam!

The filter catches just about all of them though, but it leads me to wonder about their security. Knock on wood, my Yahoo! account hasn't been spammed yet, and it's my primary e-mail address.

I don't know why Slashdot and others think this is new.

I saw the same Google invitation (on the Google home page) on a client's machine two weeks ago.

My news got posted!

Anyway, sorry about the link, I guess it was session-specific, but the link on »www.google.com sustains. Too bad everyone who wanted it got it through invite already.

I know everyone will disagree with me, but it would be neat if Google reset the usernames so people could re-choose. Three ones I always use that nobody should even know about (since they're not real words) are taken.

Also has anyone gotten the POP to work? I keep getting "no response from the server" errors.

Guess starting waaayyy back when the internet started has it's draw backs.

So Gm is okay ! *ull*hit

You have to use a "real" email-adress, f.e. we accept no hotmail-accounts
anymore. Users who already registered with a hotmail-account are not
