180 Solutions Speaks
Comments on Coast membership, ethics

180 Solutions, like Claria and WhenU, is an ad/spyware vendor engaged in a massive PR and legal effort to clear up their image via threats, and by trying to forge relationships with anti-spyware developers. ReveNews offers an interview with 180Solutions, where they explain how they managed to join the COAST anti-spyware consortium, and answer questions regarding their programs often dubious installation techniques. The folks at Spyware Warrior then tear all of their answers apart.

They are and always will be spyware!

A company i do work for is being unfairly disadvantaged because our competitors are advertising with infosonar.com a company who uses advertisers like this to FORCE advertising content and re-direct users. They even went as far as to use a misspelled version of our domain to redirect users to our competitors.

Litigation is in process...

I don't care what they do, If i don't specifically go to their site, and ask for their software. Then i don't want it, and i don't want to have to go through tricky uninstall procedures with "interesting" methods of retaining their installations. I hope legislation is finally passed that outlaws spyware, and they actually put harsh restrictions and penalties on it.

Re: They are and always will be spyware!

I also hope legislation is passed to block this kind of computer abuse. At one time there was a name for software that was secreted onto a computer for another's purposes, and carries a huge penalty if prosecuted. The name that was given? VIRUS! I pay to use the internet and dont want to see ANY advertising regardless of what I am searching for. For a company to be able to place their software, tracking cookie, or embedded image for the purpose of tracking is to me the equivolent of home invasion, which is prosecutable as an act of trespass. Laws are already on the books, they just need to be properly applied, but given this days need for specifics, lets get some new laws.

In this thread ( »The truth ) I took some nice pictures of the 180Solutions home office in Bellevue, Washington. Since they want to spy on me, I think I will spy back. (Since I already posted the pictures once, no point in wasting disk and posting them twice; so I will just link.)

Given the time it may be interesting to wardrive by and sniff the wifi band around their building.

Class action Lawsuits

Why don't we get a bunch of users together and start a class action suit.. How many people have paid professionals to remove this stuff ?
Why can't most of the spyware/adware be removed completely?

That will surely gets things rolling.

Because in their infinite wisdom, Congress, at the behest of the administration, gutted your rights by gutting the class action suit mechanism.

Good Farging Luck.

I am not a lawyer, please explain how our rights were gutted. All I had heard was that class action law suits will now be in the federal courts.

The fed courts have a more difficult standard of what is actionable, so not as many suits can be brought. This good and bad. Good because some of the kinds of idiotic suits brought in the past won't be brought anymore, bad because there is less recourse for low-level crap foisted on the public on a massive scale.

COAST anti-spyware consortium...

...is now anything but. Now it reminds me of those fake PACs who would be named something like Californians for Responsible Environmental Reforms...but are in actuality a huge lobby for gross polluters.

Most logging companies plant more trees than they harvest and are very much pro environment.

I see the position works.

They're pro-profit. They're "pro-environment" because they're forced to be.

Tree Farmer

Re: COAST anti-spyware consortium...

Well, in a sense. The vast majority of projects that require trees (paper products, base lumber, etc.), require vast quantities of trees that are roughly uniform. Tree farms actually allow for a much higher quality product for most applications because the age, and general health, of the trees are fairly uniform. Practically all paper products are created from farm raised soft-pulp pine trees, which can mature commercially in as few as 3-4 years.

Tree farms are a plus for wildlife, because tree farms are only farmed every 4-5 years. In the meantime, deer, birds, and other wildlife enjoy a protected forest. Most tree farms are also very large, providing plenty of room for multiple habitats to be established, and most farms are "rotated", to provide a steady supply of trees. The rate is such that most wildlife can rotate with the trees. As a bonus, most companies that own tree farms allow hunting on them.

The downside is that the trees are all of the same species - so if a blight occurs, the entire "forest" (tree farm) can be wiped out quickly. There is also the fact that the tree farms aren't forests. Beyond the lack of biodiversity, the uniform age of the trees often creates problems for predatory birds like owls - and a young tree farm is so open that many prey species can't effectively hide from predators.

That said, tree farms have greatly slowed the destruction of old growth forest in the US and Canada, although logging of these forests still goes on for luxury materials, utility poles, etc.

There *can* be a balance between profit and environment, and most modern tree farming companies demonstrate that.

Re: COAST anti-spyware consortium...

I agree with that. I'm sure there are logging operations with stellar records in that regard. I still suggest saying they're "Pro-environment" is a bit of a stretch. How pro-environment would they be without regulation?

Perhaps a better example would be the Tobacco Industry's use of front-groups (Heartland Istitute) who claim they're pro-smoker's rights.

They're for the same people they've been drugging with genetically modified nicotine in an effort to keep them addicted? Sure.

The tactic is used when one's own position - if plainly presented - can't stand on it's own two feet.

That is true, but! The reforestation that is done is not the same as a natural forest and is not as good an environment. I am all for controlled and sustainable logging, but I am for ending all old forest logging, what they replace it with is not the same and will take decades and centuries not years to replace.

LOL

"...The notion that many of our users came from improper installs is an urban legend started in the anti-spyware community. Unfortunately there is a fair amount of public hysteria in the press these days about malicious software. The reality is that 80% of so-called spyware are harmless cookies."

Harmless to the company, yes. Victims have a different view.

It is a business that violates my privacy and uses my bandwidth to retrieve information for their profit.

How is what they do any different from stealing cable TV or setting up a camera in a neighbors home so you can sell them stuff that fits their life styles?

Highest Standards?

Despite COAST’s organizational issues, 180solutions is steadfast in our commitment to operating under the highest set of standards for downloadable applications.
Wow. If 180Solutions uses the highest standards then I guess all of those non-malware applications that don't actually force themselves on users' computers can advertise that they utilize "higher than the highest standards."

180Solutions compared to NBC??

Is this guy joking?

Just like NBC we are in the business of connecting advertisers to consumers, and providing entertaining, free content. One wouldn’t look at NBC and call the network “advervision” – but clearly NBC is in the business of showing advertisements that sponsor content. 180 does the same thing.
NBC shows me new and original content. Ok, perhaps the level of originality and the quality of said content might be up for debate ( ) but at least it is somewhat unique content. To pay for this content, they sell ads.

180Solutions themselves don't provide any content. Instead, they latch onto content/services provided by others. In some cases, an application bundled with 180Solutions, the content provider might get some compensation. At best, this puts them on the level of an advertising agency, not a television network.

However, in other cases, they are merely leeching off of the content others have provided. Using the example Cory Magnus himself used:

For example, if a user is searching on various search engines for Alaska cruises, a Web site for one of our advertisers selling Alaska cruises may appear in a second browser window, offering a listing of prices to purchase an Alaska cruise.
They aren't compensating Google (or the other search engines) for the ad so they aren't paying for the content. they are just using the content that someone else has made to sell advertisements. So, in this case, they aren't even an ad agency. The best possible TV analogy would be if CBS paid an ad agency to somehow run ads on NBC to draw "Apprentice" viewers over to "CSI".

This is exactly the point I always make with ad's and the PC. If I want to find out information about something...say Travel to England, then I will go to a SEARCH ENGINE (altavista, yahoo, google, ask jeeves, etc), and then enter in my question, and get a list of pages that match my question.

I believe the point of a SEARCH ENGINE site is to help those looking for things on the internet. Companies like Altavista, Google, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, etc all came around because people needed a way to find things on the web.

Yes, one of the ads may be for something I would want. Lets take the Travel to England again. My search on Altavista comes back with Travel Company Bob. I click on the link, and go to Bob's site. 2 months later, I am looking for travel to Germany. Somehow, 180Solutions got installed and is running on my PC. It then throws an Ad for Bob's Travel. Since I did not visit a search engine, and did not do a search for it(but, somehow it knew I wanted to travel by looking at cookies, search history, or whatever other crap it does), I WILL NOT CLICK ON IT. In this case, A company I used would not be used again. Yes, I would remember them, and assuming that my trip to England was good, I would have used them again. But, my point is, I was given an ad that I did not request, did not ask for, and now, that good company must suffer, because I refuse to use companies that engage in this kind of activity.

Point here, and I think I can speak for everyone...If I am not looking for something, then don't tell me what I should be buying, eating, drinking, etc.

Everyone has the power to use the internet to find what they are looking for. We don't need the help of these spyware/adware companies to do it for us. Real Companies like AltaVista were created to help us to do just that. Search the internet for what one may be looking for, and be done.
