More Adware Industry Threats IBIS sends cease and desist to WinPatrol More Ad/Spy/irritant-ware industry threats have emerged, this time directed at anti-Spyware and security outfit WinPatrol. IBIS, the makers of the IBIS toolbar, have sent this cease and desist letter (pdf) to the website, claiming the product has a "clear intention of harming IBIS", and Winpatrol should stop "interfering" with their business. IBIS claims their toolbar is installed on a "consensual basis" something spyware researcher Eric Howes points out is patently false.

| | Junk is still junk I'm surprised on how many companies who include ad-ware or spy-ware, try so hard in telling us that it's not ad-ware or spy-ware.
Does in provide ads? yes Does it "watch" how you use your Internet or network usage? Yes
And you are going to debate this how? -- Want to know how to get a free mini mac? Send me a pm.

| | Fluker join:2005-04-07 West Lafayette, IN | What the Winpatrol team ought to tell them um.... "Your spyware interferes with my antispyware, the way my users like it" or simply put "You can blow us, all of us"
Talk about business interference. Even if its open source freeware. I would tell them that its their own freaking fault for being unaccepted by entering into a realm of unwanted products.
I can see it now,
IBIS - "Stop him from stopping people from being bothered by my friendly software"
Judge - "So users knowingly download patrol to get rid of your software that snuck onto their computer?"
IBIS - "Well you see its not entirely like that, users don't know that our software is so great and useful and that they need it, winpatrol is depriving them of our cheap crap"
Case closed. | |

| No Basis The legal claims have no basis and will all be dismissed, provided the company filing the claims doesn't have their hand far enough in the rear-end of the entities responsible for determining the case outcome.
Remember: Slander, Libel, Defamation. They can only be so if the information that is being publicly stated and/or spread about them (adware/malware/spyware) is false, and as far as I've seen every bit of info about them including the software designed to prevent them from infecting our systems with trojans, adware, malware and/or spyware is completely true, and there is no purposeful false representations of the companies propagating and distributing their Virii, Trojans, Adware, Malware, and/or spyware. -- ASUS SK8N nForce3 - 8GB PC2700 - AXP 64 3400+ - nVidia 6800 Ultra w/512mb - CL Audigy 2 PP - WD SATA150 36GB + Hitachi GST 250GB - Plextor PX708A + Sony CRX300A - Dual 600 Watt PSU's.

If they don't like the term spyware, or malware, just call it something it REALLY is by everyones definition.

| | | just got done cleaning wtools and tbps funny i just got done cleaning out a friend's laptop of those two files, and related crap.
i can't imagine the low-life programmers that can stand themselves for writing this jibberish crap.
i bet they sit around smoking dank laughing at the thought (or news clip) of some unsuspecting victim attempting to remove the program, or change their start page, or terminate the tsk (which automatically re-start).
its really nasty crap. i would terminate the one task and another backup task that loads that task would re-load it. and when i tried to terminate the first one, the other one would reload it. finally went into safe mode and was able to delete both the programs, etc.
these people should be prosecuted as if they were theives, robbing us of not only our time, but of our computer's usability.

Oh they could probably stand themselves, while they raked in the money, they are driving around with secured computers and such. Probably not even using windows, or they have a copy of Windows XP just to test their handywork. They probaby are on the beach with some hot girl while we struggle in keeping our PC's clean, while they look for the next "job".
said by DSLTech5:these people should be prosecuted as if they were theives, robbing us of not only our time, but of our computer's usability. Why, goverment and big business is still proving crime does pay. Look at the recently jailed spammer 9 years and 24 million dollars.. where did he go wrong? Ok so we let him out in 9 years, his money matures and he still does not live as poor as I have seen some people have to live here in the midwest. As sickening as it is, he and the adware/spyware/malware programmers are a lucrative commodity now-a-days. He may have a permanent record, but I bet for 1.2 million he could get rid of it rather quick, or suppress it.
Hell they probably can make just as much money as lawyers. Keep in mind I am not attempting to flame anyone or flame the thread. But I do like to keep somethings in perspective. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this.
