Despite last minute bidding efforts by Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable will be the new owners of Adelphia, according to press reports. I love my Adelphia service. My uptime has been fantastic, and my premium speeds top 6.5mbit download and 800kbit upload. Not to mention I have no caps, throttling, restrictions, anything. Please don't change me to Comcast or Time Warner

With Time Warner, your premium downstream will be upgraded to 8Mbit but you'll lose quite a bit of your upstream. It'll go down to 512Kbit.

There are no usage limits or monthly caps with Time Warner either. That seems to be limited to Comcast and OOL.

What are Comcast's and OOL's usage limits and/or monthly caps?

That is a question for the ages....if I remember correctly, neither company tell you what they are...just that you went over them and either restrict or cancel your service.

The caps for Comcast are 6.6Mb/s for their gold tier and 4.4MB/s for their base plan. There are no hidden usage caps and throttling on comcast. The only time u might get a warning from comcast about usage is if you download/upload 24/7. Other than that i hope this helps

If the FCC has anything to say about this, this is far from over. They may go back and address the court's concerns with the Cable Act bill they passed back in the 90s that among other things stated that one cable company cannot own more than 30% of the market nationwide. This acquisition would bump Comcast from their 29% now to 44.

Re: please nooooo

Maybe I'm confused. But how does Comcast picking up only 1.9 million subscribers bump them from 29% of the market to 44%?

Their customer base is pretty large already. 1.9 million is not that big of an addition to Comcast.

See this story at the Washington Post. Shouldn't have to register. Perhaps the 44% is a bit high but certainly over 30%

Comcast is not going to own all of the Adelphia properties. The 1.9 million new subs will belong to Comcast. The rest of Adelphia will be owned by a joint venture with Time Warner and Comcast at the helm together. Also, there will be no rejection to the deal. It is as good as done.

One of the net effects of the deal is to eliminate Comcast's ownership (and involvement) in Time Warner's cable operations.

DSL just became available in our area, and I have Earthlink, so QWEST won out. "Adolph-ia" restricted us to their internet service, and I would have been double-billed to keep my Earthlink email addresses and webspace. If they had sold a year ago, it would be either TW or Comcast cable internet for me. Maybe in another year...or maybe NOT.

Who get's what customers?

I want to know which of the two companies will get the Georgia franchises so I can start a mailing campaign to get HDTV into my home.

Re: Who get's what customers?

Yea that's going to be interesting. I am in South Florida and our HOA has an agreement with Adelphia that basic cable is bundled into our monthly dues, and we get a discount to some degree on other packages.

Up till now, the HD channels ARE in the guide...but we can't get them since we don't have the HD stboxen yet. This is the one better thing I see with at least Comcast, they roll these things out faster in my experience.

I have no idea what to expect with TW since I've never had their service.

I know Comcast has a good bit of service down here, in other areas so it could be that's where we go.

I was very uneasy about Comcast taking over, but once they took over, they had HDTV available here in an astonishingly short period of time. The Comcast buyout has without a doubt been a good thing for us.

Time Warner around here has always been quick to deploy new technology. As far as getting HDTV, I imagine you'll be in good hands with either company.

My guess is that you'll see the following as well:

Adelphia -> Comcast:

Bartow/Cherokee/Forsyth Co. GA
Winder/Talmo GA
Fort Payne AL
Brunswick GA

(The first three fit very well into Comcast's Atlanta holdings and North Cobb headend, Fort Payne can be merged into the Gadsden Comcast system, and Brunswick fits with Comcast's Savannah cluster. TWC is legally barred from owning cable systems in Atlanta because TW owns WTBS.)

It's interesting that Comcast will serve all four major cities in Tennessee after the deal is done...all via acquisitions (Scripps-Howard in Chattanooga and Knoxville, InterMedia in Nashville, and TWC in Memphis.)

TWC is barred from owning cable systems in metro Atlanta because of TW owning WTBS (the same applies to Cox because of WSB.) That, of course, leaves Comcast...who just happens to have several hundred thousand customers to the south and west of the Atlanta-area Adelphia properties.

Cable

It is not anywhere close to over. The shareholders have to vote on it, the judge has to approve it... Cablevision is not out of the bidding, just the board of directors for Adelphia has approved it as the unbinding winning bid.

Funny

Those jokers that came in and sold at&tbb to Comcast, got rich, moved on and took over Adelphia. Now, they sat back and did nothing and sold it to Comcast again.

Nice to sit back and get rich off of doing nothing.
Tirelessly.......

"Schleyer added, “Over the past two years, the Adelphia team has worked tirelessly to transform our business, enhance our operations and improve our competitive position. Today, Adelphia has a first class network, dramatically improved financial performance with complete transparency, and improved service offerings – and this transaction clearly recognizes the tremendous value of the Adelphia enterprise.”"

The Adelphia customers are a long, long way from being Comcast customers. There isn't a "now" involved in this yet and there won't be for quite some time even under the best circumstances for the fastest conversion...provided that there will even be a conversion. For all we know, the only change might be who the check is sent to.

Yep really sucks for people that now have availability to services such as on-demand. Problem is Adelphia (as supposedly advanced as they are) never upgraded their HE's past the 500 MHz so no vod yet for you old adelphia areas!!!

Oh great. My 99% solid Adelphia service is gone :(

Ugh. I live in F'Burg, and my area would presumably go to comcast. With all the problems my friends have been having with comcast (service stability, etc) my 99% solid Adelphia will probably go to hell in a hand basket. I can probably thank comcast to oversell my area even more than adelphia has =\

F'Burg here too. When I moved in 9 months ago, there were some problems, but a system upgrade fixed them. I now see 4-5Mbps+ down and 800+ up, and I am not even on premier.

At the very least, comcrap will jump prices... especially on the premier package, which I planned on getting once the promo I am on now ends. I have HSI only, so the premier is only a $5 increase.

I used to live in F'Burg too. Too bad Cablevision didn't get them. They offer faster speeds for cheaper prices and are in the process of upgrading to DOCSIS 2.0 to make the network even faster.

Not to mention....

This will all likely take quite some time before we Adelphia customers become absorbed into TW/Comcast customers. I'm sure there's a lot of legal stuff and logistical stuff that will have to be worked out before we see any changes. Perhaps even a full year; who knows?

Good or bad, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Local TV Changes?

How does something like this impact television? Here in central PA, out of the 70 channels they offer, only ~10 are in stereo, there are signal anomalies on every channel in every tv in town, there are no HDTV options, and digital is a joke. Will someone else having the network mean that we'll see some upgrades? Or will it just mean that the lineup will change and we'll be stuck with the low quality picture and sound that we've had for a decade now?

As for powerlink, it's rock solid with nearly 100% uptime. Few interruptions and fast speeds even in peak hours.

In all likelihood, yes -- once Comcast takes over, they will probably merge your area into a more modern headend nearby. (One of the benefits of cable companies owning "clusters" of service areas is that they can consolidate headends, which makes it easier to offer advanced services. Here in Atlanta, Comcast has been able to go from a dozen or so headends to just three over the past decade or so.)

WHo gets socal?

Well i keep reading back and forth that time Warner would control the LA market but then Comcast is not that far away from here in the Socal area. If we become Time Warner that then maybe i wont have to go to verizon. later on in the year FIOS will be available in this part of ontario that should be around 9- 12months from now when the new owners of adelphia start. Still though hopefully Comcrap wont get LA area.

Comcast/Time Warner

Nothing surprises me, but we are talking about 6 months or more before any changes occur, most changes are probably minor, because there not going to overhall the existing equipment, except to make improvements. Cable rates aren't likely to change for adelphia customers within 12 month period, and you will have more additional services, forthcoming.

Lets put it this way this way there isn't much you can do as a customer. Cablevision should have been looking to make a big long before if they were real serious about adelphia.
Cablevision real asset is not its cable network anymore its programming. The problem with its programming is that it has created an adversarial relationship with cable operators, and needs to work in better partnership.

The deal is done, companies like comcast/Time Warner Cable don't make press announcements, there is no way that cablevision would ever be able to handle such a big aquisition, and vendors trust Time Warner Cable to handle this deal.

Comcast to have 29% after all is done

I just read an article that states that after all of the properties have been swapped, and all the new people have Comcast, that Comcast will control 29% of the nations cable systems. I keep hearing people saying that they will have more than the maximum of 30%, and that the deal will not be approved because of it. Well, you people are wrong. Comcast was smart enough to do the math and work everything out perfectly. I don't think they'd go through all of this only to break the rules and be told it can't go through. Comcast, you cannot arrive here in Waterbury, CT soon enough!
