Lawyer doesn't see what p2p fuss is about
(old news - 06:53PM Thursday Apr 21 2005)
tags: legal · Fileswapping
Many ISPs, like Verizon or Charter, will fight for your privacy in court when approached by RIAA lawyers - at least for the sake of due process. Canadian ISP Videotron isn't one of them. Videotron is one of the only Canadian ISPs handing over personal user information willfully (they're part of the Quebecor entertainment family). A lawyer for the company says the handover of such info happens frequently and is no big deal; he insists it's "really important that we protect our culture."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember Canada kicking anyone's ass since Bendict Arnold.

I played in a hockey tournament in Toronto a few years ago, and there weren't any Canadians there. Everyone was Indian. I'm not exaggerating, pretty much everyone.

Re: Eh?

winter olympics, male and female hockey, snowboarding.

winter x games, snowboard slalom, second in long(winner was euro), first in short.

and the diffrence between Americans and Canadians is, we are where we are from first, and where we are secondly.

Re: Eh?

Really? Go to England, and see if you can get fish and chips without it.
Since Videotron is primarily Quebec, they may have issues translating and it will be an extra charge and business for the lawyers and cable companies to make $$$

I hope so.
Yes, four other major ISPs (Bell, Telus, Rogers and Shaw) all won in court fighting to protect subscriber information. My own ISP, Cogeco, has stated that they will not provide any customer information without a court order. Not only is Videotron utterly stupid, but they're opening the door to lawsuits by subscribers for violation of Canadian privacy law.

WTF

That's nice, really nice. So can I go to them and ask for subsriber information too? I think one of their customers has my copyrighted file (boot.ini) so I want to send them "subpoena" (spam) or fine them (steal identity).
Protecting culture? my ass
All they care about is good "business relations".
That's why I love my Verizon.

Re: WTF

It has more to do with the fact that Videotron is owned by Quebecor who are the owners of, among other things, Archambault, one of the biggest music selling store.

Damn...AOL is Looking Good Now!

Well, hope anyone who's looking for actual privacy need not look towards an account with Videotron. If they're giving out customer information out freely, (even if it's to bust pirates) then who knows who else they'd give out your information to!

Guilty until proven innocent

He gives a new name to being a lawyer, guilty until proven innocent. He don't care about the average joe, he is a corporate lawyer. His sole job is to protect the company at all costs. He proves that by the way he talks. He like every other corporate lawyer are the ones who make these outragous EULA's, where the customer is left high and dry.

Ummm.... this is Canada.

This is Canadian folks. Up here in Canada it's not illegal to download but to upload. This was taken to the supreme court, and they ruled that it is not illegal to download but to share. DO NOT SHARE and there is not a problem. Leech all you want Videotron subscribers!

Don't forget Dan, that this is also Quebec land of the language police. Part of the ego-centric Canadian culture identity crisis where anything that's close to "American" is bad, and protecting Canadian culture is good.

There was a show on Discovery Time channel something about Do Europeans Hate the United States. I found it hilarious when they where interviewing a couple of French College Students in Paris, France. They where talking about how crappy the States is while eating at a McDonald's.:D

Extent of Quebecor Media

Just so people here know where Videotron stands in the corporate layout. Québecor owns among other things:

- Le Journal de Montréal (tabloid newspaper)
- Archambault (chain of CD, DVD and book stores)
- TVA (TV station and DVD distributor)
- Many weekly magazines
- Vidéotron (cable and Internet provider, and video rental outlets)
- Seven publishing companies
- Quebecor World (printing plants)

Seeing how movies and music fit in their corporate structure, is it any wonder Vidéotron will squeal like the little pigs that they are?
