Same price, depends on CO distance
(old news - 09:40AM Tuesday May 03 2005)
Some clarification on the Qwest speed news posted yesterday: customers, as noted in early documents, will be able to see 3Mbps/640kbps, 5Mbps/896kbps, or 7Mbps/896kbps speeds depending on how far they are from the CO, all for the same price. Interested users should follow this thread in our Qwest forum, where users are waiting to sign up for the new service - which goes live today.

Thats pretty good

That is pretty fast for DSL, but whats the upload?? The 7m tier is actually twice as fast as Verizon's best package here in NY. The real question is how much will it cost. If they sold 7m naked DSL here in NY for a decent price I might, just might consider dropping TWC!

Re: Thats pretty good

Thanks Karl. Those uploads also look good. Since I know that Qwest does offer naked service, I wonder if the prices are the same? If so speakeasy is going to have a hard time selling their service in Qwest areas!

There is a $5 upcharge for going naked.

You pay $50 a month and if you want if you qualify for 3 you will get 3 if you qualift for 5 you will get 5 and if you qualify for 7 you will get 7.
So either way it is only $10 more then the 1.5 package.
I bet qwest knows that only a few people qualify for 5 and 7mb that is why they are all the same upgrade price

It is only $10 more a month, from $24.99 to $34.99 + ISP charges for our shared line only. For our dry pair line (unbundled line) it is slightly more, from $38 to $43 _+ ISP charges. We use a cheaper ISP package through Qwest.net for both lines, it is dubbed " Qwest Choice Internet Basic" and is $9.99 a month. This totals to (w/o taxes):
$52.99 for dry line and
$44.98 for the shared line
Not too bad for the speed upgrades, lets hope they work out, my lines are due to be upgraded by the 10th!

LOL

Oh that's gonna go over well when people find out that they are paying the same amount, but one is getting more speed than the other.

Re: LOL

Actually it's a good move. "We will provide you the fastest speed we are technically able to at this set price".

I would pay for it. For some reason COVAD tells me they can't provide me the 3M service, yet Speakeasy tells me they can offer me 6M.

What's the problem? It's a best effort - if you're too far away that's not their fault.

Re: LOL

The problem is, the people getting 3Meg service should not have to pay as much as the people getting 5Meg service.

It's not? Oh, thats right. It's *MY* fault for building my house too far away from their CO.

Seriously, get a grip. They don't owe you something for existing. This is a VERY good deal. Dont' like it, go back to dialup. You sound spoiled rotten.

They don't owe me anything. I'm not a customer in their market. It is a very good deal, if you're lucky enough to have built your house next to their CO and can get 7Mb for the price of 3... If you're an inch out of compliance, I sure hate it for yah.

I'm all for them giving you what they can though. Of course I'm spoiled rotten. I've been enjoying 5Mb/sec along with all of my neighbors and no one is getting preferential service for a few months now...

Re: LOL

I'm confused. Are you upset that they're giving people up to 7mb if their line can handle it or not? You don't need your house built next door to the CO either. You can be a couple miles away and still get a great increase.

Your example (about your current service) could be more accurate, too. Right now your provider has you capped at 5Mb. If suddenly your line could handle 7mb so they let you have it and didn't change a higher price, would you be upset? Should your neighbor, who can't, be upset? I don't think so.

If I live far away from a bus stop should I get a discount fare simply because I had to walk further? Naturally some one out there thinks so, but not the sane people.

LOL that's not preferential treatment. Preferential treatment does not follow any kind of logic - it's purely subjective. The reasoning behind the equal pricing isn't subjective, it's based on distance. How come you're only looking at it like the 3mbits are paying for 7mbit service, and not that the 7mbits are paying for 3mbit service? Glass half-empty, i guess.

Re: LOL

Besides, if it's a "best effort"-seemingly meaning without speed caps-it stands to reason that speeds will slowly decline the further out you are from the CO. Maybe if you're an "inch too far" instead of getting 7 Mb, you get 6 3/4...I could live with that. And, if they make it clear that the offer is "the fastest we can provide to you at a set price" People who sign up knowing this have no complaint, allthough it would make sense to lower the price for those who are too far away and can only get 1.5Mb.

This is just another gimmick to hide a price increase and try to polish their image with the clueless, since, I'm sure, most customers will fall into the 1-5 Mb range.

The price for 1.5M is unchanged; you have to sign up for the higher speed at $10 more a month. How are they hiding a price increase?

Wake up SBC!!!

I guess it's hard to have SBC upgrade their speeds in the Tulsa area when they are the only ones providing DSL. Makes me think that the state of Oklahoma always takes a couple steps backwards when everyone else sky rockets forward with greater speeds.

Re: Wake up SBC!!!

It is not only Oklahoma!

Southern frickin' California still has not seen any speed increases above their top offering of 3mb/386k, which in real terms translates to 2.1mb/270k, despite offering speeds up to 6mb/600k to independent resellers in our market.

So, don't feel left out.

I for one am getting tired of waiting for my 8mb/1mb service...............

Re: Wake up SBC!!!

How can you be mad at SBC offering 3mb/386k for $29.95 a month. I remember as I'm sure you do to, when it was 1.5/128 for $40 + a month.

It's getting better slowly, but it is getting better.

Also SBC was offering 6mb/386k just before there now top 3mb/386k & then did away with it. Them that have the 6mb down are grandfathered in as long as they stay with it....

I had qwe$t at one time with the 1.5/896 set up, it still pinged in the high 200 with that speed. so I was not too impressed with Qwe$t.

Bah, humbug!

Apparently MY DSLAM hasn't been upgraded yet. My max is still 1.5Mb/s. But, the friendly Qwest salesman claimed that since I've been a customer for so long, they should upgrade my DSLAM soon. (He doesn't know what he's talking about, does he?)

Dat-a -boy qwest

I think Qwest might be on to something. Lets reward them for doing the best they can. Maybe they will see as customers come back they can spend and build, spend and build and we keep coming.
For years this company hasn't had a clue. Maybe this is their wake up call. Hey Qwest...screw MCI, you build it as fast as you can and we will come.
Next, shut down interleave where you can and work on the rest.

Talked with Qwest

I am 12k ft from my CO ... currently have 1.5/1024 ... I can get a max of 3mb down for an extra $8 a month... Qwest ping times are not to bad for me... 70ms from west coast... 100ms from east...
ALTHOUGH... was told by Qwest person that they are over extending themselves right now... and that they are not able to provide the full bandwidth... I asked him when they would be able to provide the full bandwidth .. he said was not sure but would guess around a month...

I qualified for...

...the 5/896 speeds for both of our lines at our business. Tech mentioned that the line may be provisioned for the 7/896 speed once some simple tests are run at the time of provisioning, and that if the lines look good, we will be bumped to the 7/896 speeds.
Lets all goes well!

Speeds will be coming to RT's soon.

Those remote terminals that are fed by fiber and not copper will be upgraded to qualify those customers to the higher speeds. Just wanted to drop the comment for those thinking they are left out for not being on a CO DSLAM.

Im pretty sure that sbc (well, here in ameritech land) does have a 6 mbps tier. Unadvertised though. I believe it is about $100.00 though. check with the sbc forums for more info.
