Pennsylvania Gets Some Fiber
2.1 billion dollars and ten years later
More than a decade ago, Verizon signed a deal with Pennsylvania promising they'd deploy fiber to 50% of the state by 2004, in exchange for roughly $2.1 billion in incentives. While the deal was scrapped, Verizon kept the money, with only one of four state commissioners wondering if the move was in state residents' best interests. A decade later, Verizon is now deploying Fios to select parts of the Pittsburgh area. Talk about taking the long way home.

Not looking for free I'm just looking for righteousness.
The Company took PA's Money and didn't deliver as promised or give it back. So I'm upset that many other states came first before PA got Fiber for the few lucky ones that are getting it.
It's like me promising you yea give me 25000 and I will make your GMC SUV run at 58 mpg by 4 years. Then not deliver. I bet you would want your money back.

Lehigh Valley perfect for FIOS!

Verizon better take a good hard look at the demographic in the Lehigh Valley, we are a prime place for FIOS deployment.

Verizon promises; but is very slow to deliver

Verizon has made many promises in the past and frequently fails to deliver on them. They play the PUC(Pa public utilities commission) like a fiddle. Fios is coming, but Verizon promises on how fast they will do it is not worth the paper it is printed on.

Perhaps splitting hairs but that agreement was with Bell Atlantic at the time.
It's nice to see that fiber is no longer an empty promise at least for some parts of PA already.

It will be even better when fiber shows up at my Wayne, Pa residence.

Actually, if you RTFAs, instead of engaging in bias fanboy crybaby footstomping, you'll note Verizon was front-and-center in having the original Bell Atlantic agreement dissolved. It's very clear here that Verizon was paid extra to expedite residential fiber deployment and yet PA got no actual residential fiber out of the deal.

Yes, it's quite simple.

If a bell or cable fanboy, act outraged every time a private consumer-centric website dedicated to serving end-users doesn't lick corporate boot-heel.

Dismiss everything that's said that doesn't jive with the press release from your favorite company as bias.

It helps if you stomp your feet.

Wouldn't it be easier to just provide facts so they resort to ad hominem or some fallacious stance?

What exactly is spun here?

A company signed a deal, was given incentives, then the state let them keep the money without holding them accountable for failing to hold up their side of the bargain.

No, my objection is DSLreports, aka, broadbandreports.com insinuating on their front page that Verizon was the one who cut this deal 10 years ago with Pennsylvania which is utterly false. Maybe if they would quit jadding the story and originally post on their headline news page that it was, in fact, BELL ATLANTIC who cut this deal, then was subsequently merged with countless other telcos to FORM Verizon, then I'd quit trying to state the truth.

Yes and when you purchase or merge any business, you are reponsible for All contracts, and agreements. Verizon is responsible for all BA agreements.

Well if you read the article you have seen that Verizon is deploying fiber in new areas. That's newsworthy to me because its in my area (no FIOS for me though ) and its my parent's money they have (I was to young to pay taxes at the time).

Re: Talk about beating a Dead Horse

I agree. 2.1billion is a shit load of money. With nothing, that we know of, to show for it.

Maybe we should take down the damn mayor and judge campain signs and put up some new ones around the big anchor. "Verizon took 2.1billion dollars to bring us fiber. Where is it?"

Fifty percent of the state...what parts of the state? Most likely the larger cities (Philly, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, etc). Northeastern Pennsylvania is, once again, with any broadband options.

Allentown is Getting FIOS

I don't know what everyone else is saying but I see Verizon FIOS trucks almost everyday here in Allentown, PA. They're running wires underground and above ground. I'm starting to guess we're going to be one of the next cities to get it.

Incentives = taxpayer money

$2.1 billion in incentives? Let's call it what it is...TAXPAYER money. And the day they failed to comply with their end of the bargain they should have been forced to pay it all back plus interest. And to add insult to injury when Verizon finally got around a decade later to deploy fiber they do it in Texas before PA? PA taxpayers of every breed should be pissed beyond words at this fraud perpetrated by the theives at Verizon.

Can't put all the blame on Verizon. Blame the dumnass politicians that let them get away with it. I swear, PA politicians are so half assed. Just look at Act 72 for instance.

Hum I told you so.

Ten years ago I said Verizon wouldn't do it, and I'm still right. PA should order them to give the money back with interest.

There should of been deadlines in the deal.

they wont come to alot of areas, they are filtering out the areas where they have seen the most deliquent accounts, they do not want to upgrade fopr people who wont pay, even though there are thousands in the are that will pay. And their stock dove because it is averaging 2-3 thousand bucks per customer to hook up.

PGH FIOS

Well, I now see many Verizon trucks with big spools of black cable, and many mobile labs sitting in a parking lot over at Parkway Center in the off hours. I wonder when they are going to start deploying with in the city itself? I'm currently serviced out of the Allentown CO, and my CityNet DSL is rock solid, never down once since I've started back in 2002. But I wouldn't mind a little FIOS in my daily diet, and would be even nicer if Verizon would resell to CityNet. Only time will tell.

not unlike other states, but probably moreso than most states, pennsylvania has a rich history of politicians smiling warmly with very full pockets while corporate giants such as verizon plunder consumer's pockets. one has only to look casually @ the fat cat politicians in philly, pittsburgh & of course harrisburg.

Water over the bridge...

Bell Atlantic was given tax breaks to build a fiber optic network in PA. (billions,I know), but VZ is deploying fiber in the Philly area as well as the north and south areas of Pittsburgh are rebuilt and will be ready to go within a couple of months. This has been promised for a long time...and finally it is really here.
