My Config file on my modem shows 10/1.. this has been for years. Glad mediacom customers are getting what they pay for. Optonline is THE best high speed in the country hands down!

Does it matter?

Does it matter "WHO" is the best? As long as you are able to get some form of stable and reliable high speed Internet, then you should be grateful.

Re: Does it matter?

Well, actually it does matter since the average idiot will look at statements like "opt online is the best, etc." and make buying decisions based on that. Opt Online used to be good, but now it's crap. They will cap your upload to 1/10th of normal if you upload what they consider "excessively," which roughly translates into anything over a few hours at a time. They also throttle your download to 1/3 speed after only 10 minutes of solid downloading, AND they do all of this secretly without notifying the customer. Their overall speeds have dropped, which is exactly the opposite of what they advertise. My daily average download speed was around 5mbits, and sometimes it was 3 or 4. That was dropped from around 7 when I first got the service and I never had the download speed that some got in the area of 9. I had my upload capped twice, which is a real pain in the ass to have removed as it involves dealing with their "super secret security (read a**holes) dept", and phone calls and call backs. That makes Opt Online a piece of crap and witless statements from noobs about how they are the best need to be stamped out. At the moment, Verizon FIOS is probably the best service out there, although it's not widely available yet. I should know, I had Opt Online for years (since it existed) and I recently switched to FIOS. What a night and day difference from feeling utterly restricted and unable to use my internet the way I wanted to without fear of being capped or throttled with opt online, and now I have three times the speed (15/2) for the same price ($50/mo), it's dedicated, and all with very little fear of having problems. Any other questions?

That's funny, My brother has FIOS for over a month and he's had nothing but problems. And alot of the time the ping/latency was overly high. So no one CO is the best.

Re: Does it matter?

mr anonymous, I'll bet your brother's pc is either swimming in malware or seriously misconfigured (or both) before I believe that it has anything to do with FIOS. Over in the fiber forum, there have been very few reported issues, and the ones that are posted there are usually not FIOS related. You should have your brother post there and maybe we could assist him.

Agreed your brother's pc is either underspec, infected with virii and malware/spyware or all of the above.

Or Mr anonymous you're just a cable fanboi trying to stir the pot. Fiber to the premise will always trump VDSL and Cable. Especially cable since telco's have the ability to get more bandwidth on a better pricepoint than the cable companies. Why do you see such a big battle over MCI and teh scramble that SBC made to acquire AT&T. Both companies may have a large business base but both also had signifigant infrastructure. Something the cable companies have to build or lease both of which will lead to higher prices.

what makes you think that VZ WILL NOT do the same as well?
They will eventually do the same AND they will raise your rates to probably 20 % more than what you paid last when you switched. It is called switch and bait.

You think that all this money VZ is putting down = same low price? They are counting on more people switching sides and if it does not happen, people like you will be paying for it by increased rates.

bsr5,

I really thought this mentality went away in the 5th grade... well, at least for most of us.

I agree with the other poster.. as long as you are happy with your service, get a good speed, etc.. then you have the best services.

And by the way, please let me put this notion that FIOS is the golden isp of all.. A little company in the west called Surewest, formerly Roseville Telephone Company, has been doing 10/10 for years now - fiber to the home and at a rate a little better than FIOS.

So, to throw at you - and the rest of you FIOS worshippers, I hate to burst your bubble; no, actually I don't hate doing it.. I LOVE doing it!

I think this whole mentality of the entitlement attitude is horrid. Just a few years ago we were all creeping along with 56k modems and for the most part, ok with it. This broadband technology comes out giving speeds like 256 and 768 and people were thirlled. Just a few years later, a bunch of spoiled brats want more for less. Give these companies a chance to get it rolled out!

I paid over $90 for my up to 1.5 / 128 with Pacific Bell when it came out. I was the launch customer in Sacramento and was happy to pay the price. I would still pay $90.00 a month for my 6 meg / 768 cable modem service becuase I get a LOT of use out of it. I think the braodband companies, WITH ALL THEIR BUMPS IN THE ROAD, are doing an excellent job connecting us to the world. I only appologize - to the BB companies on your behalf - that all they get in return from the people that bitch continuously that they have only this in return!

Grow up guys, if you have a 1.5 connection to your home, that's actually good for most everything we do right. So what if it takes 2 minutes to downlaod that mp3! You can't listen to it that fast anyway!

I think it's great that Medicom is rolling out the 10meg. I just can't wait for the day when those getting the speeds will bitch that they speed tests only show them at 9.5. Just keep bitching, reasearch shows that bitch their way through life die faster too!

Uh, DUH! I know FIOS is a product of Verizon.. try re-reading my post and see that I am referring to the product.

Your attempt to be cute has only made you look a fool...

I was actually an engieneer on the Surewest deployment team and am also a certified fiber splice technician. I am probably more verse in the technology that you, thank you.

It WAS!! Up until about a month ago I was consistantly getting 10/1 speeds from OOL, now I'm getting 7300/900, with no explanation from them (who say my contract is for 1000/256 so I should be 'happy with anything over that').

STFU newb : )

Seriously, Mediacom went through some serious growing pains after they took over for @home. They cut us from 10mbps down/1.5mbps upstream... to 1.5 down & 128kbps up! That would have made me switch to DSL right there, however I had no choice in my neck of the woods. To make a long story short, they've been edging their bandwidth back up to where it should be slowly but surely, and I've had excellent customer service all the while... English speaking people & short hold-times. Of course this is in my area... But I feel they're doing their best to be competative here & am anxious to see what that brings to the market. Oh, and 10/1? S T F _ --- U

I'm a little worried.

While I'll always welcome a speed increase, I'm a little worried about what kind of price Mediacom is going to charge for the 10/1 tier. Mediacom has never been very cost competitive, especially in areas where they have no competition. Guess we'll just have to wait and see....

It'll still it will still be competitive, as they want customers to order that (more $$), but still keep it at a lower price than what they'd want to offer it.

Those speeds will be great and i do hope its at a reasonable price. id pay $100 a month for it, and lets hope residential customers can get the 10,000/1,000 speeds.

Ammo for the Bitch, Wine, and Moaners

For the people out there who bitch, no matter what, here you go.

"if they can do this to Mars why not my house?"

Mars Telecommunication Orbiter - Interplanetary Broadband

The Mars Telecommunications Orbiter is expected to transmit data at a rate of 1 megabit per second when Mars is furthest from Earth and reception takes place during the day. When Mars is at its closest approach and reception takes place at night, data transmission rates of 10-30 megabits per second are expected. In contrast, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter transmits data at about 128,000 bits per second, about twice as fast as a dial-up connection.

I know this will not make you gamers out there happy because there will be complaints about latency.

Re: Ammo for the Bitch, Wine, and Moaners

GREAT POST!

What I really think here is that if all people are using the internet for is gaming, and for as long as they play their games, maybe we should be looking at their mental capacity. People can use the internet for what ever they want, but I could care less if the internet is "up" for you to play your little games.

I actually could care less about the internet being strong for game players. I HAD a roomate that used to play ever-crack a.k.a never-quest ... he played it so much, he lost his job because he'd rather stay home than go to work. When he did loose his job, I helped him out until I learned he was not looking for a job, rather playing games all day and all night. He lived, talked, and breathed online gaming. Well, I helped him out again.. OUT of the house!

I could really care less about games. I belive, and yes, *I* belive that if you look at the statistics, those who's life/business depends on the internet will gladly pay more for a good internet connection AND NOT BITCH ABOUT IT, than would a gamer who wants it all and bitches about paying ANYTING for it.

Who do you think will be listened to first... Happy gaming!

Around here Mediacom sucks...

I live in a medium sized town in central Iowa.. and Mediacom's 3/256 never gave me above 2/190. During the day it would drop to well below 56k. I wouldn't go ack to cable now, I've been spoiled by not having to share my bandwidth with every teenage P2P junkie in the neighborhood. 7Mb/1Mb for 60 bucks is awesome. I'm glad you cable guys get your speeds, it's just that I don;t believe anyone3 will actually SEE them. Let's hope I'm wrong.
