NJ Fios/Cable Spat
Verizon's political moves rile cable outfits
Last spring, Verizon told New Jersey that because their state Board of Public Utilities ruled they could only "moderately increase" wholesale rates, the state might not see Verizon Fios (as punishment). This spring RedNova reports that Verizon is again using Fios deployment as a carrot on a stick; this time to get lawmakers to streamline the TV franchise approval process. Cable providers, obviously worried about competition, aren't pleased.

Sorry Dave, cable sucks and charges way too much with monthly rate increases. VOIP is just "not ready for prime time". I'll take DirecTV, PTSN and DSL. They work, are relatively trouble free and are cheaper.

I dont care if you like telco or not, but cable is the only competitor or provider in some areas. Plus my phone bill dropped 40$ when i went to Voip. Maybe its about time the Telcos get competititve. For example providing 3m dsl to all its customers?, or caller id, vm and call waiting should be free. I cant believe the cost to run a copper wire to my house cost so much.

I don't know If You knew this or not, And I don't know If You are New to this Country or not, But didn't You know You are supposed to put the Dollar sign before the amount? Since in the USA It's correct and proper to put the cent symbol there and not the $ Symbol which goes like these two Examples: $45.00 or $45,000.00, Not after It. And yes You should do It the right way, Not the wrong way...

And Yes I'll be corrective as Americans put the $ Symbol before the amount typed as that is what is taught, Just as We will not Kneel or Dip our Flag to anybody, period. As that is the American way of doing things. Does that make US Superior? No, It's just that the USA was modeled after the best concepts of the Roman Empire, With a few tweaks and improvements added of course.

Please don't think that I'm flaming anyone and I'm not a hypocrite either, I may have concentration and anxiety problems, But I don't do childish things like flaming as I'm an adult that's 44 years old and I know better than to stoop that low. Oh and I'm not a troll either, Concerned Yes.

I'm glad You think I wasn't being serious, Have You or anyone else You know of seen the $ Dollar symbol on the Right side of a price of an item or product on TV anywhere in the USA???

Answer: No.

Maybe the Europeans put their Euro symbol on the right, But the Dollar is always put on the Left, Never the right.

And Yes I'm serious about this, I'm not joking about It at all.

My caps lock key works just fine as I never type in All caps, Thanks. USA is meant to be in capital letters, But I guess some don't or didn't pay attention in class or just didn't care. I mean this isn't Europe or in that area of the world. And I would think people that can operate a PC are a fairly smart bunch of bananas by nature, But I guess some are a bit dumber than others.

I'd trust competitive forces here. Verizon knows that the residential market is highly competitive -- and price constrained. I say get off their back. FiOS is important.

Verizon should just have to negotiate on a town by town basis. Its the rules, Verizon should just follow them.

We live in a society based on Law, if Verizon only stands for the law when its in their favor, it makes them a hypocrite. If Verizon wanted to sell cable, its not going to take them 10 yrs. Our cable company did it for the whole region in less then 12 months. Again Verizon lies, and gets its way. BOO HOO poor Verizon.

everyone should want this.... Even if they are going to stick with Cable... Look at whats its doing in NY city because of competition HMMM whats happening??? let see...
1. the cable company is offering higher speeds some up to 10M Down (fios is up to 30M i think with the pricey pakage)
2. Lower prices
3. Better service

so whats so bad about competition?? and just wait till verizon starts offering there TV service Via Fios

Silly Verizon, Monopolies are so Bell Atlantic

Lets see, Atleast some oen is sticking up to Verizon. Im glad. Hey if Verizon doesn't wanna deploy FiOS, Theres always someone that will. I personally don't like New Jersey, but hell, Theres more Telcos in the US, They can kick Verizons ass out, and then have SBC come in or someone else.

OK as long as the same rules apply to all

I'm OK with a change to the franchise laws under a couple of caveats:
The same laws apply to all: cable companies, wireless, telcos.
The new law doesn't allow cherry picking only parts of towns.
A part of the law abolishes all the special fees(except the ONE franchise fee) that a company tries to apply. No more telco 37 varieties of add on fees.

Too many fiefdoms anyway

NJ has 567 municipalities. It's insane the waste and duplication of services that goes on here. I don't blame Verizon for trying this approach at all. From a business perspective they would be crazy not to try it.

obvious dichotomy

can someone please xplain why cablcos can offer dial tone without regulation but telcos have to be regulated for the sale of televison? i see cablecos offering the telcos main base product without any regulation whatsoever...and when the telcos try to compete by offering the cablecos main product they are met with regulation. it seems a dichotomy exists between the major players where only one can offer the others services unimpeded and the other is seemingly unfairly singled out for regulation. discuss please, i look forward to hearing your responses. thank you yes i use cable for my high speed internet, but i would use neither for television cause the choices of viewing material are crap. everybody loves raymond? bullshit.

just offer video =D

if its a data service just claim the TV is a data service too and not a CATV service. i bet that method could sidestep the stupidly dumb franchise(Monopoly enforcement) laws.

Franchise laws have nothing to do with monopolies. They are about granting companies right of ways, enforcing service standards, and regulating rate increases.

How, how effective they might be is another question....

Verizon?

I live in Madison NJ. Verizon will not pull new copper down my street therefore normal ADSL palin doesn't work.

In the next Town Chatham Townsip the trunk line comes from Summit and the distance is so far that Verizon offer only a trickle speed well below broadband.

Now IF Verizon is such a great company why haven't they bothered offering even a decent ADSL service to so many people? I have NO trust of Verizon at all. I also know the PUB of NJ isn't stella either. The 2 deserve themselves. Meantime I went to Cable Internet some years ago.

Hello - not like cable was any different

I guess the cable companies want you to conveniently forget that we (the taxpayers) subsidized and in many cases outright paid to string their cables so they could make money from our fees.

Fios isn't a right, it's a priveledge. Dell isn't required to price the same to businesses as you the home user. Business week flying costs more than weekend flights. There are conditions in all markets in which a company can decided the conditions are not good enough to put out a service. This isn't new, and its not just telecom's, but any business. And all kinds of industries leverage governments to increase the incentive for their products.

People just want Fios, well a great deal do. And with any such product, the withholding of it from a population is a strong incentive to meet the conditions the company wants for deployment. The alternative is to deploy it ourselves. That is an option. But we should be upset if it's one we find distasteful. This is just the nature of getting what you want, what the companies want, and ultimately even what you might, as a shareholder, want in the end. It is just one big balancing act.

Has anyone who demands FIOS ever thought of the FCC's ruling that bells who upgrade to FIOS are not required to open their platform to competitors?
