Google's "not evil", but they do help fund spyware companies, according to researcher Ben Edelman, who explains how and why. It's done by allowing Blogspot to push spyware via ActiveX popups, paying AdSense sites who in turn buy pop-ups through 180solutions, and more recently, some shaky relationships with dubious toolbar makers. Eweek (via Spyware Warrior) also takes a look at the problem. Enforcing the actions of your partner's partners is a tough sell, particularly with tons of cash involved. Edelman argues if Google wants to continue "doing right" by the community, addressing this issue is necessary.
