Singapore's PHIwave plans to roll out 'super wifi' technology
(old news - 07:32PM Tuesday Jun 21 2005)
Imagine enjoying unlimited Internet surfing anywhere at home or on the beach for just S$10 a month. That could become a reality by August or September as homegrown tech company PHIWave has developed what it calls a 'super wifi' technology. It plans to work with partners to offer wireless broadband service in Singapore soon. Last month, the Infocomm Development Authority sold wireless broadband licences to six firms, which are bound to roll out broadband wireless services within 18 months. Looking like a giant thermos flask, its souped-up antenna is behind PHIwave's super wifi technology, which is able to transmit signals up to 4.5 kilometres away. It took PHIwave six years and millions of dollars to develop the technology. The company says it will soon offer a broadband service in Singapore, together with its partners. Wider coverage means fewer transmission units are needed, which translates into lower costs. As for throughput, PHIwave says it can provide connection speed of 54 megabits per second, and it can double that speed to 100 megabits per second using its compression technology. PHIwave expects the island-wide rollout to be in phases. Full article Channel News Asia
